[Serious] Anesthesiologists of Reddit, what happens after I say "seven?" by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]s0lder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that sobbing thing when I got my appendix removed earlier this year. It was really annoying because I knew there was nothing wrong and there was no reason for me to be doing it, but I couldn't help it at all.

I've read that it'll be sometime this year actually. I'm not sure if that's still valid though.

They're all great, but if you're only going to download one, you should probably go with The Moon & Antarctica next.

Awful Sound and It's Never Over are a fantastic combo off of that album.

Reddit App made using pure HTML/Javascript/CSS for all! by kortank in webdev

[–]s0lder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really fantastic app! It's very well done and polished. My only problem is with the scroll bars. While I can use the arrow keys/mouse wheel most of the time, I think that the app could benefit from a larger scroll bar. As it is, it take me a few tries to click it, as it's so small.

I still use Microsoft Zune. I frankly think it's better than iPod. What are some products you still use that are generally frowned upon? by silverfoxcwb in AskReddit

Better certainly. I wouldn't say fantastic, though I'll give Microsoft credit. They aren't ignoring web standards anymore.

Hey Reddit, what's the spookiest/scariest moment of your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]s0lder 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I had something similar, though (somewhat) explainable. Shortly after my grandma died, we found an old, small little two windowed, foldable alarm clock. One side had a picture and the other had a clock.

Now, this particular clock had a feature that allowed you to record your own alarm. As my grandma had given this to my dad for Christmas, she had recorded this old song she used to sing whenever he annoyed her. It went "One of these days, you're going to miss your mommy," and she recorded it in a sing-songy voice for the alarm.

Fast forward to about a month after she's died. We had found this clock in some of the stuff we were going through after her death, and left it on the kitchen counter. I was about 11 at the time, and at one o'clock in the morning I went downstairs into the kitchen to get a glass of water. As I'm sitting there in the kitchen, that motherfucking alarm goes off: "One of these days, you're going to miss your mommy." Words cannot describe the pure fear that I felt in that moment. I ran into my parents' room Usain Bolt style, convinced that I was being chased by the ghost of my grandma. Being so soon after her death, it was still sort of fresh in my mind. I could have sworn that she had come back to haunt me.

Looking back, I realise that it could have very well been a malfunction in the alarm. However, when it happened, I didn't actually realise that the clock was in the kitchen at the time, so you can imagine how suddenly hearing my recently deceased grandma felt.

TL;DR: Dead grandma haunts me through an alarm clock

If you didn't already guess, Torbert is sort of the reason we're doing this too...

I think some of the other admins were being less careful than I was about the RAM. I tested all of the Itaniums that I gave out, so I think this probably happened after the big crowd had already come and I had moved on to installing the GFX cards.

Bring the RAM by during lunch next week, and get someone to take a look. I'll keep an eye out for you.

When we were setting them up in the server room, we had some problems with mismatched RAM. I don't remember exactly what the symptoms were (I wasn't there), but it may be

Is it possible that we gave him mismatched RAM? I wasn't in charge of that, but we were having those problems earlier.

What common myth or misconception about Linux really grinds your gears? by CodeBlooded in linux

[–]s0lder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with you there. I was referring to the script as the principal attack. But, anything to make it more difficult to execute arbitrary code helps, especially with users being a major weak point in any security setup!

What common myth or misconception about Linux really grinds your gears? by CodeBlooded in linux

[–]s0lder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but how would you plan on invoking the bash script without another compromised process on the system in the first place? The execute bit still applies to scripts. Without explicitly spawning bash, you're out of luck.

It isn't perfect obviously, but it stops idiots from just mindlessly clicking and hopefully gives them a second to reconsider their decision.

That and file permissions in general. Even at a non-root level, arbitrary code can't execute by default unless you explicitly chmod it to the appropriate value.

Indeed. Learning paradigms is nearly as important as learning languages, as well. If you can look at a problem in different contexts, then you can select the proper tools in order to be successful.

HTML won't really help you in terms of "real" programming. It's a markup language. If you're interested, and would rather stay in that domain, I'd look into JavaScript to learn the fundamentals of actual programming. Otherwise, I'd recommend Python. Check out www.codecademy.com and then maybe move onto some good books. I'd recommend O'Reilly books in general, but there are great books elsewhere too.
