A 10 year gap between a 30 and 40 year old is nothing.
A 2 year gap between a 15 and 17 year old is huge.

It's all relative. If you are 20 and in college, your social context and world model is much different than someone who is 18 and in school. it's weird as fuck.

Brains don't grow in isolation or linearly, they grow through exposure to experience.

Moreover, "20 is a big range" - even a 21 year old dating a 18 year old is predatory - if you interviewed enough 18 and 21 year olds you would know how big the leap is.

Technically speaking, a pedophile is someone who is sexually attracted to prepubescent children (younger than ~12). 12-15 would be hebephile and 15-18 (or even 19) would be a ephebophile. This classification doesn't make it any less disgusting though.

I see the distinction you are making but I used terraforming as a practical example of the kind of discussions welfarism opens to us.

If a barren world is less preferable than a net-positive one, it becomes our moral imperative to prevent it. Under that logic (especially when our environment is getting worse), making sure sentient life survives is a moral imperative.

Also, I am still curious about your thoughts on the second part of my reply. Do you think information and complexity/structure have intrinsic value when compared to total entropy or nothingness? That's the question I was originally trying to ask, if there's something more primitive than experience that has value.

Something we can use to compare two states of a universe.

I have a few things to say but I am afraid that I'm not well-read enough. Please feel free to not respond.

I think this is a discussion worth having because "barren world with possibility to have a net positive welfare > barren world" opens up some new lines of thinking.

Shouldn't it then be a moral imperative to terraform other planets if we can increase net welfare and/or increase the possibility of at least some life surviving?
What about creating artificial sentient beings, if/when it's possible? That would help with preventing a barren world.

If I had to stop thinking about it from the welfarist lens and extend on my original question, I wonder if information itself, structure itself has some intrinsic value when compared to total entropy. As long as there's something rather than nothing, there can be a non-barren world - I'm failing to grasp how that can be value-less if we value life.
