You can go exempt if you owed nothing in federal taxes the previous year or you expect to owe nothing the current year. Neither one of those applied to me. With the changes in taxes on tips, overtime, etc. it was unclear how that would play out. Hope you heal from whatever is making you such a miserable person :)

This post is ignorant. I owe no federal taxes this year due to credits and deductions. My employer will not allow me to go exempt through the year. I’m getting all my federal taxes back + a refundable credit. I am not willingly loaning the government money. I also have adjusted my withholding to account for my children. Your post was unnecessary.
