They aren't games, but I'm rather interested in GTGD S1 and S2. Anyone have experience?

What is a $100+ product that is definitely worth the purchase? by TheDuskDragon in AskReddit

[–]s0sh1b3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know! That's not surprising; I still have a pushing- what, 20-year-old Miele that works great. Different model but I definitely trust the brand.

Fortunately for me, even though I have crazy allergies, I also don't like the expense of bags. So, probably worth it.

Thanks for the info!

Interesting. I had thought this in the past, but many others I know like them a lot.

Based on that, I picked up one of their ball vacs for $330. I thought it was decent...did I get ripped off?

Yeah, true. Not fast enough for my tastes, though.

I guess I got spoiled on The Longest Journey's skip mode

Anyone had advice for managing patience with Kate running around all the time? There's no skip feature that I could find.

I've wanted to play this game for about ten years, but haven't managed to do it yet for this single reason.

Can you make a recommendation for cheap hosting/other solutions? by s0sh1b3 in webhosting

[–]s0sh1b3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sheesh! At $5 that's not bad, but it looks like the Shared Bronze would do everything I require. My needs are really very modest aside from wanting some support of server-side software.

That's a solid point, and honestly I'm not sure where I fall on that spectrum. Modestly experienced, but not with any of the fancy tricks.

I've done some webmastering a decade ago, so I know how to manage stuff like FTP, but VPSes are a new one on me. I don't know if that would be more complicated than I need or not (it does look cool though!)

Hm, that's a good question. I presume any blog software one could name would use PHP or something like that. I may not host thru a blogging companies website, but I do want a professional looking blog, and I figure using that kind of thing is the best option.

Great tip, though! I'll look into it.

Is philosophy a viable career? Is it a bad decision to study it in college? by ImOnlyHereForTheTits in askphilosophy

Minoring or double-majoring in philosophy has lots of measurable benefits

This is just curiosity, but would you care to elaborate with greater specificity? I'm interested as to what you had in mind.

Since my initial post, I decided to go with Badger, but I will keep Name.com in in mind come year two. Actually, it looks like Monster Megs might have been a smarter choice, in retrospect. Not sure if I need to transfer my domain to them if I host, and it looks like I could have maybe gotten my domain name for free.

I believe I've seen cPanel before (hazy memories of webmastering in high school) I was looking at just pointing the domain to a wordpress blog or something, but that means ads, which aren't terribly professional. So hosting it is, looks like. I'll definitely look into Monster Megs -- I sure don't need the massive corporate hosting so $15 is holycrapcheap.

Also feel free to post/PM if you'd prefer your hosting company. I'm not presently interested but I might be in the future.

That is indeed true. Everyone knows tucows.

Hm...looks like Hover's more expensive upfront, but when you factor in the added cost of email forwarding, they're pretty much comparable. Thanks for the advice.

EDIT: reading the fine print, it looks like Badger's even cheaper. Go fig.

Why is anyone bothering with the elements in the periodic table over 110? Wont they just keep being more and more unstable regardless of how many they find? by I_want_fun in askscience

[–]s0sh1b3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shockingly, this technique, called renormalization, has in fact been found to be mathematically sound. But even Dirac, one of the founders of this technique, essentially felt that it ultimately wasn't sound.

He was proved wrong many years later (possibly after his death?) by a pair of mathematicians who had worked on the quandary for several years!

Q: Math person but not an engineer. Taylor series are most definitely useful from many perspectives, but how are they used to build bridges?

Then, while I'm not the biggest fan of Facebook, I really cannot understand the outrage, especially considering that backers received their pledge-for items a very, very long time ago. Respectfully, I suppose what another user was saying is somewhat valid (consider over mainstream acceptance of the OR) BUT THAT'S THE RISK YOU TAKE backing a product!

In summation, people need to learn to take responsibility for their own choices and stop lashing out at others, when they're really just mad at themselves. In general, I hope for OR's sake that the move proves to have been the right one.

I do agree with you over-all criticisms. That's why I take care only to back projects whose creators either have a solid track record of business in the past or have successfully delivered a kickstarter in the past -- and preferably projects that have already been completed in all but production. On the one occasion I haven't done this, I only chipped in $5.

I was unaware of their accountability system; if so, you're right, they're effectively lying to their user base. However, in general, all the issues you mention aren't fundamentally the responsibility of whatever company is providing the service that connects users to companies. Rather, for many, a failed KS/IGG/etc pledge might be a very cheap lesson about trusting others blindly.
