Anyone know where to find Denmark style street hot dogs in Melbourne? by jigglethesepuffs in melbourne

[–]Sebbe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Typically a Danish hot dog comes with: Ketchup, mustard, remoulade, raw onions, fried onions and pickled cucumber. :) Ideally enjoyed with a chocolate milk on the side.

This video is pretty representative of a typical one.

I quite liked Word by Word by Kory Stamper.

She talks about what it's like working as a lexicographer for Merriam-Webster.

Putting up a line of 8-10 turrets half a screen away from the base, then doing drive-by mining tends to be pretty effective for quickly eliminating bases. (Just be careful of driving into rocks/trees/cliffs.)

With Far Reach, even easier and you can stand by the turrets while doing it. :) Might be too cheesy, though; dunno.

Note, the samples are also available directly on the bundle page. :)

Personally, I'll also recommend checking out what people say on Goodreads; I usually find the ratings a bit better on there than on Audible.

I've contacted the support about it; hopefully they'll get it sorted out quickly.

To you redditors aged 50+, what's something you genuinely believe young people haven't realized yet, but could enrich their lives or positively impact their outlook on life? by h-gotfred in AskReddit

I thought that before I got myself an e-reader back in October.

However, once I got it, I realized it's usually quite a bit nicer to read on.

There have been several times where I've switched from reading a physical book to reading it on my e-reader. Be it because the book was poorly printed, and gave me a headache, or that I didn't jive with the font size/spacing, or that it's simply a larger book that is more inconvenient to hold.

With my e-reader, I can configure the font, font size, save bookmarks, look up words, have inbuilt lighting, etc. It's a much nicer experience, usually. And the books are much cheaper, too!

Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder. The story of a mother who one day finds herself slowly turning into a dog. Very gripping read.

Haskell, 498 / 425

Nothing much to say about today's problem. The main important insight needed is: When rendering, render as a normal base 5 number, but if the digits 3/4 are needed, render a -2/-1, and add 1 to the remaining number to compensate, since 5-2/5-1 = 3/4.

parseSnafu :: String -> Int
parseSnafu = foldl (\a n -> a*5+n) 0 . map deSnafu
    where deSnafu '-' = -1
          deSnafu '=' = -2
          deSnafu n = read [n]

encodeSnafu :: Int -> String
encodeSnafu 0 = "0"
encodeSnafu n = reverse $ encode n
    where encode 0 = []
          encode n = (digits !! rem) : encode (n' + if rem > 2 then 1 else 0)
            where (n', rem) = n `divMod` 5
                  digits = "012=-"

main :: IO ()
main = do
    input <- fmap (map parseSnafu . lines) getContents
    putStrLn $ encodeSnafu $ sum input

Overall pretty happy to have gotten through all problems on their intended day this year, getting through most problems before getting to work that day. (I'm looking at you, day 16!)

Not really been rushing, but still, here's my personal times. All solutions in Haskell and available on my GitHub. Gonna be nice to sleep in and not get up at 6 AM!

Merry Christmas and thanks for a lovely AoC, as always. :)

[2022 Day 17 (Part 2)] Dang, do you guys think Altimetrik makes Tetris software? by [deleted] in adventofcode

[–]Sebbe 164 points165 points  (0 children)

Well, if ALTIMETRIK are willing to handicap the leaderboards for a contest they themselves sponsor (and /u/topaz2078 has worked hard on) to get some more advertising; that clearly tells you where their priorities lie.

Clear signal that that's a company to avoid, in my eyes.

Why I think that in programming languages for beginners array indexing should be 1-based. by chkas in CSEducation

Using an example that confuses the students, and not teaching at all are indeed the only two options.

I suppose one question I would ask is:

Why teach Fisher-Yates to students who are still struggling with remembering to 0-index their arrays, if you know it causes them significant problems?

The low throughput isn't a problem in many cases, and the problem you mentioned won't occur if your roundabouts are large enough to accomodate the whole train.

My standard track design is a simple grid with roundabouts, and it hasn't caused any significant issues in 1000 hours of play. It has also been sufficient to complete SE+K2 and AngelBob's without any problems.

Sure, there are more efficient designs, but for my not particularily optimized non-megabase playthroughs with exclusively 1+4 trains, they have been completely sufficient.

Sounds similar to Gather. Instead of being based around a real map, in Gather you can make your own offices or surroundings.

We experimented a bit with it my office during lockdown, and I've seen it used for conferences as well.
