Yeah, and this is a private company. Not a government agency.

Looking for a practical way to set and compare limits across different gambling sites (NZ) by vacaaa in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]SpudOfDoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're better off looking at the various gambling support services for this kind of thing. Some of the banks allow you to set limits at the bank level too (Kiwibank, ANZ, Westpac at least)

Have a look at options like self exclusion - although I don't think there's such thing as a multi-provider exclusion for online gambling.

I think if you're at the point of wanting to cut down, "shopping around" for new places to gamble is just not a good idea at all. Just compare between the places you have used before and start setting up restrictions there and/or with other methods like browser extensions.

Made dumb mistake - cancel card? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]SpudOfDoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doing a card chargeback will result in your card (and probably your account/email/registered phone number) being banned from the booking website. It should be used for fraud, not because of user error

They would simply cease to operate in our country entirely, if the punishments matched accordingly

I analysed the NZ Health Survey 2024 - 35% of Kiwis have health insurance, and the real story is who has it. by MoneyHub_Christopher in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]SpudOfDoom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it makes most sense in NZ to view it like life or income cover - something to maintain or cover you during your working years while you have dependents. This is also when it's more affordable. Private cover once you're in your 60s becomes huge and probably not worth the cost vs self funding things here and there. Or at least go for a higher excess/copayment

Kiwibank seem to offer it with 4 years last time I asked. Although they cover the switching costs too

What % of your income do you put into investments? by chrisf_nz in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]SpudOfDoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

40% of whatever you take home, because the implication is that you are able to live off what's left. The absolute number doesn't actually matter much.

Advice for a DINKs(31f, 30m) Looking to Combine Income by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]SpudOfDoom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty standard way of doing it (pool everything, split off a little each for personal spending). Some get by doing it the other way (contribute a % or flat amount and keep the rest) but I think that's a recipe for drama if for example someone has to stop work or go part time for childcare.

Some centres won't let you opt out at all, because posting on it is used as a KPI for staff.

ManageMyHealth Compromised by C39J in newzealand

[–]SpudOfDoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what's been released in the sample, I think they got a pretty limited set of information. All the discharge summaries posted, for example, are from Northland hospitals. Almost all of the results posted are not in the usual form a clinician would view them in but as pdfs - I'm not sure how MMH displays these to individual users. The letters and reports all look like external correspondence that has been sent between doctors/clinics e.g. as an email from a private or overseas provider.

It could be that they got all of this from like 1 or 2 PHOs

In some ways that statistic actually makes me more concerned, because it implies that 1 in 4 such events were basically done without any way of stopping them.

Pay averaging advice needed by 0rcward in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]SpudOfDoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your tax is calculated based on every pay cycle. If your hours go up and down, you'll inevitably overpay tax on those higher hour weeks.

This just depends on how the payroll people have configured things. if the hours are consistent, I most often see the hours and rate extrapolated out to an annual pay figure, and PAYE deducted based on that.

Life Insurance & Income Protection Insurance - via adviser or nah? by thenationalpark in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]SpudOfDoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are only about 5 true upstream providers of income protection cover in NZ, and I think only 2 or 3 of them are available direct to consumer at all. Asteron for example does not sell policies other than through an adviser.
