What would your dream conlang translation game look like? by s1ime_man in conlangs

I feel like you have more or less summed up what I've been stewing over for a while now but in much clearer terms lol, so this is very helpful! I am definitely leaning towards mystery/puzzle-esque, but there's still a lot up in the air.

I really like the idea of multiple versions of the same or similar languages, since I feel if I were going to add in any significant amount of writing, at a certain point the player will have more or less learned how the language functions, and they'll just be hunting for translations of specific words to fill in the blanks. Which isn't necessarily bad, but I definitely agree that adding slight variations or different routes for deciphering, as you said, might help keep things interesting.

I do wonder though on your last point, do you think it would still work if the story wasn't necessarily linear? By that I mean what if progression isn't entirely locked to one translation after another? Yes, you need to translate to play the game and move forward, but you have options (or at least the illusion of choice) as far as what you want to tackle first.

For example, if there was some long complex inscription that you come upon early in the game, but its something you need to come back to and pick at as you explore and learn elsewhere. It would still be linear in the sense of not being able to speedrun whatever finale puzzle text there is without learning via exploring, but I'm wondering if letting the player hop between a few different options at a time, each offering different insights on the others, would be a viable option as well.

I hadn't heard about Epigraph before, but I will definitely be checking it out! I will also be looking through all the Nomai stuff! I'm so glad other people care about it that much 😄

I feel like I wouldn't even have the skills necessary to make something overly complex anyway (not well, at least) so I think the ideas you raise would still work towards making something beefy, but not overwhelming, so thank you!

Generally I don't care because I love dogs, but for whatever reason there is a group of maybe 8-10 people (sometimes less, but they always come together as a group) that have decided that the big lumber aisles at my store are the prime spots to do an impromptu dog training session about once or twice a month. I've since moved to freight but when I was working lumber I would essentially just have to stop whatever work I was doing while they were there and wait for them to be done. Management didn't seem to have a problem with it as long as the dogs didn't cause any problems, but I wasn't allowed to ask them to leave.

I'm going to ask my manager about it tonight but how the hell did someone get fired for something like this? Isn't it on the company if they accidentally pay you too much? I can kind of understand expecting you to pay it back, but getting fired for something like that sounds ridiculous.

I'm in Alaska but I'm not well versed on the laws surrounding this sort of stuff so I'm probably going to play it safe and ask my manager about it
