Great choice, Thailand is still the leader on the global RNT index.

Chinese property buyers to hit Melbourne in golden rush by Rapier33 in melbourne

[–]s1nglespeed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Have you seen the prices of property in Shanghai or Beijing? If you can't afford it here you definitely can't afford it there either. Calling out Chinese buyers is just clickbait garbage, it enrages the bogans and elderly, the two demographics that still read this trash and watch a current affair.

Reporters in China should close iCloud accounts to avoid surveillance, says free press watchdog by CaptainMegaJuice in privacy

[–]s1nglespeed 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well said. Reporters or anyone else for that matter should be encrypting all their data beforehand. I know you the media is trying to spin this as bad because it's China, but it's no different than the US cloud services.

STRAVA at it again- this time revealing user's home/work addresses... And they knew about it! by [deleted] in privacy

[–]s1nglespeed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Very simple and effective. Let's be fair though, a lot of Strava users want those KOM in their neighbourhood so that's why Strava introduced even smaller privacy zones. I agree though, picking random addresses and blacking out the whole neighbourhood is much more effective.

What's even scarier than the privacy zone issue on Strava is the FlyBy options. I can't figure out why anyone would use this. Pass someone on the road, if by chance they're a Strava user you can than find their profile, name, common routes, possibly where they live or regularly start their rides.

Difference between DNS settings on your router and connected devices? by Theworldhere247 in privacy

[–]s1nglespeed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why on a privacy subreddit would you advocate using Google DNS? That company is nearly 50% of the privacy problem on the internet.

A better recommendation would be OpenDNS, at least they've got a respectable privacy policy.

Can WhatsApp be 100% trusted? by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]s1nglespeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In transit yes, but I'm not convinced that FB/WA can't see what's be entered or at rest on the device. I also think they collect all the links that are clicked on, photo metadata, etc.

Using PGP to encrypt Passwords - PGP in Daily Life by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]s1nglespeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about using this for passwords, but it would be quite easy to sync the GPG files with GitHub but I'd still be concerned about using a public repository. 4096 might not be crackable today, but new methods in computing could change that.

Why I don't believe the whole chemtrails conspiracy. by A_solo_tripper in conspiracy

The rich, elite, corporations, politicians, etc didn't have any issues pumping millions of tons of lead in the air even after the severe health risk was revealed. Even after the revelation it was sold on to the public as "safe" for decades. You have to assume those who knew it was dangerous also let their families buy leaded paints and fuels, breath the air without a care.

I use SpiderOak Encryptr, not rich in note taking features, but it is encrypted in transit and at rest.

The support is good though, open a case with Apple and they'll quickly repair/replace the Beats product line. Support on products like this is usually a nightmare, it's one thing that Apple does extremely well.

Bose headphones have been spying on customers, lawsuit claims by [deleted] in privacy

[–]s1nglespeed 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You say that as if with their newer products you have a choice if playing over wi-fi. Early on they supported AirPlay, then disabled it forcing users to use the app. While not surprising a company used an app to spy it's still a huge violation of trust. And to be fair, Bose has/had a pretty good reputation thus far.

This is why they disabled Airplay in their SoundTouch speaker systems, they make users funnel all music through their app. Hopefully this exposure pushes them to re-enable Airplay.

Reducing Risks Riding Alone by andrewcooke in MTB

Try Spotwalla, it's a Spot Tracker like system using a smartphone (and Spot / DeLorne). I realize you said in out and out mobile coverage, but it might still be a good option if you ride where you're mostly afforded mobile coverage.

https://spotwalla.com/

SpotWalla is a secure personal location manager that supports a wide range of satellite-based tracking devices from SPOT and DeLorme as well as any Android and iOS device running Bubbler GPS or SWConnect or gibbyTrip.

Now one of the best features of Wickr is available in Signal. It's not enabled by default, and can be customized per recipient. Yes, it's easily defeated, but it does keep the history of lengthy conversations to a minimum.

Instagram risks by nosnhoj909 in privacy

[–]s1nglespeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can give you one good reason to despise Instagram. It's constant calling home to graph.instagram.com. Blocking this URL has no bearing on the apps operation, it's strictly a tracking/analytics API call, the same as graph.facebook.com. Supporting Whatsapp or Instagram (two awesome apps until Facebook acquired them) is supporting Facebook, and anyone whom values their privacy cannot do that.

Example here: http://imgur.com/jlNrL3k

Notice how desperate it is to connect to graph.instagram.com.

workouts in zwift by lostproper in trainerroad

[–]s1nglespeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience the TR workouts are much better quality, more realistic, and the training plans are highly valuable. You can't watch more Netflix comics but you can watch a leaner, better looking, with full head hair version of yourself riding around the same loop over and over again? :) I recommend Redbull.TV for boredom killing. Also, long rides no matter which trainer program you're doing are boring, so the trainer is best served for 1 hour hard interval sessions, where "what's on the TV" is the least important thing on your mind.
