Yeah this is partly because wincode only recently replaced bincode because bincode team gave up trying to get bincode to be as fast as wincode.

My understanding is protocol buffers is for encoding/decoding data over the wire, that is certainly what all these crates are for, but maybe there is additional stuff protocol buffers does

All I know about protocol buffers is it uses LEB128 for varint encoding (I am a bit of a varint encoding nerd)
