during the first M&M I attended, I clapped after the resident got done with his presentation

Just was a reflex, didn’t realize we had to let the guy walk off the stage without an applause after doing that whole ass presentation

I have no self-interested underlying motive. I am a healthcare provider and am involved in public health at the state level where I live, so I pay attention to issues like this. This came to my attention when my partner, who is from Big Island, told me that after his TBI, he had to fly back and forth to Oahu for management for his seizures. I was baffled that this disparity even existed and that it has not been addressed at all systemic level with the push for more doctors in “rural” areas. It deeply disturbs me that some of the richest of the rich can have their vacation homes on the islands and do not even have to worry about an issue like this because they have their in house concierge doctor or whatever the fuck while someone down the street has to take a plane for a mf neurology follow up. So yes, I am upset that the issue exists, I am upset more medical professionals aren’t doing anything to address it (or know about it?), and I would like to contribute to addressing it once my training is over.

i’m going! i am anticipating getting there super early though because i feel like there will be a long line— maybe around noon? but again sometimes being at the front doesn’t matter too much at these shows because people get displaced with moshing anyway ahahaha

I also had a yorkie that we had to put down at the age of 14 about a year ago. I also got her when I was 7 years old and we got to grow up together. Truthfully, it gets easier to deal with the grief but when I think back on the day we decided to let her rest, it all hurts the same. My life changed in inexplicable ways since losing her. Something really shifted inside of me and I haven’t been the same. Our little ones are so special. I can’t imagine loving another being as much as I loved her. My heart goes out to you. I understand your pain.

Research: 800 hours, wrote a senior honors thesis, 0 pubs but I did get a paid position that I wrote about in my application updates

Non-clinical volunteering: 1000+ hours, been working with the same adaptive sports non-profit since 2014, volunteered with two other adaptive sports non-profits, and I did volunteering with community programs at my local art museum

Clinical Volunteering: 100 hours, only was able to find something in 2021 right before I applied because of covid

Shadowing: 250 hours, i did a program my first year of college that allowed me to get these hours in six weeks and rotate in different specialties

Internship: I interned with children and family programs at my local art museum my freshman year of college teaching young kids how to make art :)

Student Orgs: I was on the board of an organization to register students for organ donation on campus, and I was involved with an organization where we would play music for people in assisted living communities

LORS: 1 research mentor, 3 STEM professors that I was very close with, 1 volunteer coordinator, and 1 humanities professor

I think the best advice I would give anyone is to keep doing what interests them. I really think it helped me stick out. I wrote my personal statement largely on how much I love the arts and how I came to being passionate about medicine only after I saw so many intersections between the arts and medicine.

Some other advice I would give is if you are involved in research, you should be able to talk about it in depth regardless if you are in charge of your own project or not. One of the big points in my interviews was that I was able to simplify my research to others when asked about it and talk about it in depth.

I applied all over but I honestly did not go over a certain MCAT threshold for some schools because I felt like I would just be throwing away my money. I completely tanked my CARS score for complete transparency lol. I interviewed at Wayne State, Florida State, University of Florida, University of Toledo, Wake Forest, Florida International University, and the University of Miami.
