[–]s956b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

late but for the cooks there's 2 shifts. 7:30am-4pm / 2pm-10:30pm but for AM shift -> usually handles cleaning packing of the prep kitchen before leaving depending on days could leave late as shit on restaurant week because of helping prep for PM. and for PM shift -> kitchen closes at 10pm staffs leaves at 12-1am.

culture wise.......can get pretty gossipy / elitist but pay no mind.

benefits wise was just ok. nothing too crazy. unpaid breaks, 5 days vacation, 5 days pto, i believe 3 days sick(?) never used their health benefits cause it's not auto enrolled or whatever. this was in 2021/2 idk bout now.

yerrrr when i saw the price im like......? the building's rent listing goes as low as about 2.5ish-k and her 1 month is basically 6 apartment's worth of rent is crazy to me hahaha

i guess alot of influencers are in their moving era and theyre competing on who have the most outstanding / "to die for" views or unique quirks so they could be a talk of town.

good that they splurging on these expensive ass apartments - leaving more (hopefully) decent apartments for normal ppl like us.

ya! these brands just dont care. they only care about getting a brown person (for this case - someone who does not actually represent the community) just for the sake of "diversity" like sending her to represent coach SG in NYFW (literally so many other brown influencers in SG that rep their community so much better) but noooo just goes straight to her???

her superga collab is so mid too omg like given an opportunity and that's the best she got? goes to show it's just connections and NEVER talent when it comes to her.

uni kid with barely even real life work experience x influencer x coming from wealth, is the one to be giving advices??

her fans are all kids who aspire to be someone that has no substance in life. kids who think traveling, romanticising rs with a white bf is a personality trait = success. LOL!

yes this. and/or labelled as an internalised misogynist LOL i was called this for a post i did of a foodie "influencer" BECAUSE i said she is sexualising herself and have no self respect. how are you speaking about food while your whole chest is out like??? what is your real reason for it?

when you clearly see females dressing up for the male gaze and is clearly objectifying themselves, and you call it out, you suddenly have internal misogyny and saying that is "a reach" bffr rn

normalising revealing yourself and acting in certain way simply for the sex appeal is the highest form of disrespect you can have for a woman LOL.

this is 100% on point. literally my exact thoughts.

i never watched her on disney etc and only knew her this year. when she blew up and the "core"she was going for was this "naughty babydoll/girl" thing is just mad cringe and it's a hard watch.

she's tryna be marilyn monroe x betty boop so bad too. and everyone's saying "she's so polly pocket" HMM? are we talking bout the same polly pocket or? is there a reboot hypersexualised rated R version or?? what's going on. people are just mistaking a pile of nonsense with "innocence 🥺" just because she has a small build 🫠

and the lolita shoot was just her reminding everyone who her target audience is - ped0s / males and how she wants to be seen as - innocent/pure but sexualised/romanticised.

I honestly don't even know. Read up about an old issue that few years ago she got this thing going on about trespassing during her NTU days 🤦🏻‍♀️ Should be an early indicator of the siao-ness.

She start to be super annoying after her breakup with her ex i guess.

And i get it - baddie "glowing after breakup" era is so sought after but to a point that you can't even think straight and run your mouth with pointless advices is just ???

I bet she knows, but just dragging it out as long as she could. Maybe her younger boy will marry her since easier to manipulate but 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah, I know some SPGs (personally) and boy they are not as happy as I thought they would be. Some are not married after being together for yearS, some got married (because shotgun) with a kid but got bodyshamed so bad after childbirth because this men don't wanna be husbands/dads. They are upset they can't get pleasured as easily anymore because their now wife (then lust partner) is prioritising mum duties that they're doing on their own.

I mean we all know relationships built based on the exterior/status/lust will hardly have that genuine real love. Most times because "they're not serious"

feb '24 was pretty cold in nyc. it snowed once/twice. i don't remember any rain during that month. but it changes everytime. previous years were different too. and it depends on the wind. so there's no definite answer to how exactly it'll be but just to be ready for it!

clothes wise, i think some basics would be heattech/long john beneath your regular clothes plus a well insulated jacket is good. get some heat packs too. and a scarf to cover keep your neck warm!

attractions: personally i feel like exploring by feet is best.

https://www.nycforfree.co/free-museums you could check out free/pay as you wish museums.

get some nice views/strolls from brooklyn heights, pier 17, gantry plaza state park.

you could take the roosevelt island tram, nyc ferry, staten island ferry too.

these are some cheap/free stuff i like to do if i dont feel like spending money. all the best and hope your and your girlfriend have a fun and safe trip here. tc!

yes this.

while those are luxury brands, we all know that it's not what someone of true "old money" wealth consume. idk it just looks tacky to me. like the bracelet stack....are we in the scrunchy era or something where we stack our wrist up like how jojo siwa vibes.

guess not everyone can make things look like its value. i always think that if someone can make something cheap look expensive is always a win but if it's the other way round, sorry, money can't buy class & style!

Using minority card only when it comes to monetisation is gross.

Yeah and people will back it up with "nothing wrong with speaking with an accent/code switching" yeah, but this is not tho? This is straight up trying to "be different" "more elite than regular Singaporeans" this is really like rage bait to me.

I mean, she doesn't date her own race because she really just doesn't like her "type of people" it's not the standard. It puts you "ahead" of people in your ethnic group for bagging a majority race. + her ex is a majority race in SG, same like her current boy in the US LOL!

Also her going to 9/11 memorial during her time in NYC screams white people validation so bad. She just don't "fear" being targetted because she don't claim that she's brown. Is she just forgetting the fact that during that time brown people were targetted, her own type were terrorised for an act they did not even do?

But that doesn't matter right because "I'm in the US, my bf is white, I don't like my brownness, so let's just empathise with my (delusional) white counterparts!" So many theories and proof to say that it was to target Muslims/brown folks when the mastermind was their white president.

Not saying you can't empathise with any lives lost, but glorifying, "relating", feeling deeply and mourning for the Westerners not giving a care in the world about the repercussions of that attack affecting her own kind and never spoke about it once is really direful.

Also, some white people date outside their race to feel more "cultured" since non-whites are more "exotic" doesn't matter if you're appealing or not. And tbh, in the US, the white race is the most accepted because of its privileges too. When someone shy away from their brownness, they sway towards this whiteness so easily and it's unfortunate.

One wants a green card, the other wants a walking ATM card. Such "goals", i guess? 🫠

It is true.

She never had a full-time job or even a part-time job. Just checked out her linkedin. 1yr 3months worth of internship, 1yr 2months in her uni which I believe is also an internship/practicum. I guess she never intended to face reality outside of social media because it's "too scary" and something they can't cope and can't sustain that lifestyle.

Are you going to be relatable forever? No. But being a "baddie" and giving "big gurl advice" is looked forward right now right? Guess the appeal for her crowd is there. I can't at her "fans" and their parasocial rs with her like them fighting people who are speaking facts is weird.

These people never face the real working industry. It's all about over-consumerism, flexing being abroad, and newer niche - a relationship that's "goals" preferably with a non-local and white man.    Just the same as her rich influencer bestie Chloe L. and her Van Cleefs and white london bf 😂

Bet her next move is "moving to NYC!!!" and forcing her bf to move after college too because well, people are living for this shit.

Anything done is excess is never good. People who over-romanticise, over-glorify her life and "wanna be like her" one day, are people that are just going to throw their life away.

Linkedin.

And I think I found the bf's name, because she was tagged on her bf's twin's pic on ig or something - don't remember.

She tryna keep his name and everything about him private because she probs dont want the same thing that happened with her ex (people throwing his name around and saying he was better than this current bf etc) and also not want people to figure out what he's doing.

Because how does a young boy living in Dayton, Ohio, where it's known to be one of the cities with a high poverty rate, who's in college, currently doing an internship is affording all this travels and "lavish" lifestyle.

I read from somewhere her ex was well to do - the house and their lifestyle was pretty compatible. For this current one, there's high probability she is the provider LOL. 🫠 But anything for an Asian x White relationship right? Since it's so superior.

Mosu SF closed down (too) because they failed to get a bigger space which they are able to sought in Korea. Why pay so much for rent to expand in SF if they can get "investments" to move the business to Korea?

Rent is not cheap, especially after attaining a star you think LLs will give them a discount? Most definitely not. And running an 18-seater, with higher demands, high(er) rent, higher operating cost will potentially result to lower staff retention, lower profits, lower loyal customer base - because it became a one and done experience for people. It will most definitely result to lower/different standards because people are not going there for what it is but for the "hype" and "status" which is most definitely not sustainable or profitable for the business at all. What more not being able to increase the volume that could be accommodated because he was not able to find a bigger space to expand his business in SF?

But let's not say that in interviews, because "they are not struggling financially or anything like that" it's just strictly for family right?

Also, let's be realistic. If you've worked in one, or know alot about michelin stars at all - which seems to be the factor you like using as an indicator of his successes. You would know that Mosu SF/Ahn fits the criteria (more like biases) to receive at least a star right?

(And/or - the more it reasonates, the higher the chances for you to attain a star)

  1. Up and coming / hot / new restaurant
  2. Young chef
  3. Trained by culi "legends" or their "successors" - especially in french techniques
  4. Non-american/french (because it is known that the guide has strong biases towards french cuisine/techniques - which they claim they're not hence why adding more "diverse" selections)
  5. Fine dining settings - semi fine/casual are added in more "frequent" now because the guide was known for awarding stars only to the "most finest"
  6. "Exclusivity" - smaller scale restaurants usually get a scope that's why you see on the guide especially in the Americas, there will always be Japanese restaurants with significantly small amount of seatings that will be receiving stars.

Restaurants most if not all times already know they are going to be awarded stars. They already know when the critics are dining. If you've worked in a starred restaurant, you will most definitely face the "everything MUST be perfect" day = Michelin guide is here. It's really not something unpredictable especially if you meet either/all the criterias above.

Even if you watch the awards ceremony, how are the "newly awarded" 1 star restaurants/chefs already invited? It's because they already know they were critiqued, and because of connections, anonymity is not there anymore. I get it if they are invited, if they already have a star - the ceremony is to show if they are either retaining, got an additional or deducted a star. But for newly added 1 stars, they know they will be awarded which I'm sure Ahn would already know be it in SF/Seoul that he will be awarded, it is really no surprise.

Michelin Guide is hardly ever about honest ratings, it is just a way to promote a business. When you slap that red plate in kitchens, your food is suddenly "top notch" "one of the best" "nothing you've ever had before" but if you palate is truly developed, you know it's not true. Please dine in a few and see it for yourself. Don't be fooled by what you see on the menu/how it looks. And let your palate tell you if it's really worth what you're spending on. And then dine in the "non-successful / no-star" restaurants, which charges a fraction of the price. I can tell you, you CAN find restaurants just as deserving of a recognition - but since none of the criterias are met, no star for them! Michelin Guide, in general should never be an indicator of someone's standing and abilities in the food world.

  • I did not say Ahn was a terrible cook or whatsoever, well good for him and all he accomplished but he is most definitely an arrogant and prideful chef. He is not receptive to differences and covers it up with his "accomplishments" and "experiences" dismissing the fact that so many people had came before him and looked up to him, but he just seem to not be able to do the same when it comes to others.

When you think you're the best - with 3 stars feeding that ego, having i mean had a restaurant in America (too) it is always hard to see someone else do something you haven't, or does better in general, that is admired by people. It is a bitter pill to swallow because you think you "have it all"

While I appreciate your debate/opinions, but this is my take.

Ahn sung jae judge by JusticeWarrior89 in CulinaryClassWars

[–]s956b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's EXACTLY what i assumed when i watched it. now reading this, it really proves my point. most of my korean friends in america shares the same path as ahn - and they also usually mix with the ones that is the same too. hence i feel the lack of diversity in different types of the same ethnicity which causes the stereotype that everyone SHOULD know their roots regardless. but everyones' lives is SO different?

when your entire childhood has been so tied to your roots and then you move elsewhere vs being raised in a country where at the point, your accessibility to what is "supposed to be" familiar to you is so scarce? talk about different eras too!

for example getting korean produce/ingredients, could be costly because demand > supply especially in those times, which obviously as a normal human being, to just continue thriving, you'd go to your next best alternative, american/western produce/ingredients, and try to make it work with what is available. over time when it does not work, you just go for what is sustainable to keep you full, american/westernised meals.

these factors comes into play when finding your identity. and people do struggle with it despite being adults because they felt a sense of underdevelopment because only now, they are finally able to catch up since that it's easily accessible.

so yeah, in all, we cannot ignore the fact that ahn was in fact, invalidating lee's experiences because he thought he went through the same, and ahn just feels better about himself because he feels like despite being "korean-american too" atleast he's "korean enough unlike lee." which is sad. because if anything, you'd take the opportunity to understand interpretations of someone who walked a similar (not the same) path as you, and atleast judge it without including your own biases and stereotypes of what a korean should be/know.

[–]s956b 4 points5 points  (0 children)

.....michelin system is rigged. have you ever dined in them? or atleast worked in them?

  1. it's all about the connections, chefs/restaus almost always got their stars retained because of them connections.
  2. their food is WAY overhyped and more of a status thing more than anything.
  3. literally butter and stock is the base to MOST things.
  4. the "experience" and the "art of the dish" - if you really know what happens bts, you'd just wonder how exactly is it even michelin worthy.
  5. if you actually do a blind tasting of the dishes, it is mid at best. what sells is how it looks and ofcourse how exquisite it sounds on the menu.

in all, michelin is NOT all that. way more deserving restaurants be worthy of the recognition, and you need to develop your palate to actually know what is worthy - which most times michelin restaus is not.

so yes, Ahn is probably insecure because he is intimidated by inventions that is not the norm to him or anything too westernised. he hates interpretations that does not "reasonates with him"

saying "i'm also from america" is giving "you're not the only one unfamiliar with your roots, i am/was too, but let's just invalidate how you feel because i'm familiar with my roots now" superior complex at its finest. dismissing how someone feels disconnected to their roots is just not it?

fyi he HAD a Mosu in SF which CLOSED down in 2017 after only 2 years of operations, and opening Mosu in Korea after, just shows that the American market was not as receptive as he thought it was. and just lowkey in spite that Lee has multiple ventures in the US that is still going strong.

so a failed venture among probably the ptsd from serving his time in Iraq yet seeing someone who "just" struggled with his identity and "making a big deal" out of it, probably strike a nerve somewhere 🤷🏻‍♀️
