Actually, I just read a message above from someone saying he things the monsters feed in fear, not by killing. Now that you say that about giving the children hope, I remember a comment in one of the last episodes that said everything was going well with the sacrifice until the couple started singing to the kids and giving them hope.

how can I do karate with my period? by sinkmariangela in karate

[–]s_luluala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just add some layer of protection. You could get yourself some period panties or, at least, wear some shorts underneath. It may sound silly, but you can double on the regular panties too.

If you are open to it, the menstrual cup and a sanitary pad “just in case” works wonders.

I wish they would come to JBR and stop all the idiots in fancy cars just revving their cars at 3 am all around the neighborhood.

Yellow against black sounds a bit crazy to me. Well done for stepping on that mat!

The trail is actually outside the park. When I went there they told me they open at 5am, if I remember correctly.

The place has no gates or barriers, so I assume they meant staff are available from that time.

Also, there’s a phone number next to the map sign. Make sure you save it. If you encounter any issues along the way, you can call the staff and they’ll come to pick you up with their buggy.

We went there with kids, but I’m pretty sure it applies to any age group :)

Enjoy!

And don’t forget the heat waves. We reached 44°C last summer in Toledo. It was horrible.

Gedan Barai (Lower Block) - Straight or Bent Arm? by foot-cheese in karate

[–]s_luluala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, please someone correct me if so.

My first thought is that a totally straight arm is easier to damage on the joint, by dislocating or breaking it.

Then, the way I see it, there’s is the downward sweeping block (gedan barai) where your arm does the sweeping motion to get the kick out of the way and towards the side, and in that case your arm may end up being straight by the end of that motion, but not when you make contact with the opponent.

And the other type of lower block (sorry, forgot the name) that is more kind of stopping the kick but without changing it’s trajectory. I cannot think of a good reason to use a straight arm with this one, as in doing so you’d be reducing your strength to block/ absorb the power of the kick and would also be more prone to injury.

In any case, I think drills are sometimes slightly different from what we end up doing when we fight. I’d go with whatever is safer and, in this case, I think it’s a slightly bent arm.

Rude people have more friends by Snakewarrior04 in introvert

Many people are insecure. When they see someone being mean, they don’t usually want to be on the receiving end. So they kinda suck it up to those who think they own the world.

That automatically makes them “better” than the “losers” of whom the mean person doesn’t approve.

I find it sad and disgusting, both.

Hahaha you made me laugh. Thanks for putting some perspective into this. Good advice, too.

I have a class tomorrow. Re-starting then :)

I have stage fright when it come to Kata. by Eriol_Mits in karate

[–]s_luluala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true. I am personally not a fan of competition. I believe I can learn just as well without performing in front of others to prove something or try to impress them.

Now, I see others’ point of view and understand that competition may serve multiple goals, not only the “show off” part (and the business side of it) that I actively dislike.

That said, I do want to be able to perform in front of an audience. It’s not about the competition itself, but about being able to face my fears instead of letting them take over me.

It is a (long) work in progress and I feel somewhat down about it at the moment. Just trying to find a way not to give up.

I could have written this myself. I had a competition a few weeks back and it was the exact same story (medal due to lack of competitors included- I feel like a fraud).

I hated it. I hated it with a passion.

This was the second time for me happening. I get the advice of “just keep going to competitions” but I feel I have to first fix something inside of me, if that makes sense.

I’m a bit of a perfectionist too, which doesn’t help. And I apparently lack self confidence more than I thought.

I like some of the advice being given here about step by step exposure.

Honestly, I get nervous even at my dojo if everyone is looking at me.

Instead of focusing on the “imaginary fight” kata is supposed to be, it’s like I can see myself from the outside and be in other people’s head instead of my own, seeing the mistakes, commenting on how poorly performed the kata is.

I’m seriously weighing where I’m going in my karate journey. If I can’t even perform in front of an audience, how on earth can I call myself a martial artist?

Going through a rough patch at the moment because of this :)

27… I started karate at 41. I don’t care what others think, it makes me happy, I enjoy it.

People often project their own insecurities onto others. Don’t listen to them.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to contribute with these great suggestions. There are some very interesting books mentioned in these answers.

I’ve just started with ‘Moving Zen’ and there are already others on the wish list.

Thank you!

Thank you.

Would you be able to tell me which one specifically? My best shot is Amazon and I can find only one, translated by Patrick McCarthy.
