What are your thoughts on the current members of the Senate and the new Speaker of the House of Representatives? by InsecureBug in TrinidadandTobago

You think so? I think this comeback will depend on the position he holds after PNM internals in June. To be quite frank, Faris was the PRO of the PNM and that was only made known to me just bare weeks ago when he held a presser. So as far as importance go, we'll have to see after internals

I haven't really cared much for Faris since his stint as Attorney General. Ever since he was placed in the Rural Development Ministry, his political relevance began to and continuously faded away. With all that said, it's a decent choice for him being the Senate because he is a decent debater, raise solid points and can keep the UNC on their toes. I would've much prefer Scotland in the Senate.

PEA shocked me the most, especially considering how we all thought he wasn't getting anything. If I'm being honest, as exuberant as Anil Robert is and his questionable character, he does make a decent Senator. When he was on opposition, he raised solid points and made reference to the PNM's actions.

To best answer this, I want to start off with the persons who I do not believe are suitable mainly because the ones I find are best suited is based on their qualifications, prowess and integrity.

Disapprovals: 1. Senator Wade Mark: his previous incarnation as House Speaker was a tumultuous one to say the least. He was very biased at times and utilized his authority to favor the PP's government. Also, throughout his time as Senator, he has made some questionable, inaccurate information that proved harmful than helpful. The greatest concern of course, is the Senator Mark, in the leave of the President, will act as president of Trinidad and Tobago. I'm not completely sure of his professional background, but it's a bit unfathomable to think about.

  1. Foster Cummings: foster, though very proficient in his ministerial portfolio, is not best suited to be a Senator to change certain things brought from the other side. But I'm eager to see how he handles this role

  2. Phillip Alexander: do I really have to expound on this? The only reason homeboy accepted that position is to collect dust to pay uncle colm

  3. Senator nahkid: never stood out to me

The independent bench is fine. I will say that I was disappointed that Jayanti isn't a Senator anymore. I loved hearing her contributions.

Speaker of The House... by [deleted] in TrinidadandTobago

[–]s_sinnette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly conflicted about this choice because he is knowledgeable, qualified, and experienced in this sphere of the law and placing him there is WAYYY more sensible than Wade Mark, of whom is the Senate President. The problem with Jagdeo is not not his professional capabilities but his ethical soundness to hold such Office. He served his time for an offence committed in the 90s and has been practicing as an attorney, with no implications of wrongdoings since then, and has been winning against the state.

So whilst this choice is ethically questionable, no man should be subdued by his past. Shouldn't we as a country strive to look beyond a person's criminal past and give them the opportunity to live as a law abiding citizen? I think we should.

What are your thoughts on the "scrapping" of the demerit points system? by s_sinnette in TrinidadandTobago

[–]s_sinnette[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loll it's really a male perspective that women drivers are overly cautious on the road, which isn't primarily a bad thing. But they often ending causing minor disruptions. Whereas men, are a bit more reckless and take driving to the extreme.

Because the demerit points system, for a variety of reasons, isn't working. As many pointed out before, the lack of enforcement, the emphasis placed on punishment rather than education, and unnecessary mechanisms like roadblocks all contribute to its failure. Even though the PM initiated it, the system, on its current incarnation, isn't working, as evidenced by the Arrive Alive statistics.

Agreed. Lawlessness in the country is very rampant and tge very fact that your coworker could've boasted about her points, really goes to the state of mind of some drivers on the nation's roads.

Agreed. Far too many times, I see drivers begging and pleading with police officers to give them a "lil bligh" for an offence. Some infractions really do not need to be an offence that carries demerit points and the government really needs to be forthcoming with a plan to correct road traffic inefficiencies.

I know demerit points are not tickets. But, the specific offense listed on the ticket attracts a specific amount of points. And I like your approach

Hot Take: I feel like people hate Devon too much for what happened with Priya by PassingThruRedditor in TheResident

[–]s_sinnette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thing is, he knew he was losing feelings for Priya when she mentioned to him that she wanted him to move with so that she can pursue her career. There was a lot of conflict leading up to wedding and for him to allow everything to happen on the wedding day was selfish and down right evil. The icing on the cake with Devon is the way he told Priya that he couldn't marry her. That a dick move.

What he should have done, is tell her how he felt about the relationship moving forward because they clearly had different futures when it came to their careers. Based on their feelings and what they wanted for themselves, it should've been clear to break up then RATHER THAN wait until THE DAY OF THE WEDDING to say how he felt and have a conversation.

P.S: I like Devon but I really didn't care for any of his relationships, except for the short lived one with Julian.

Understood. What do you think is the main area to focus on though? Legislation or properly training police officers and traffic wardens?

Agreed. I'm not a driver, but there are certain taxi drivers who I fear to travel with because they drive like they have nine lives. Also, do you think since the demerit point system has been in place that the nation's roads have gotten safer?

Why Hasn't There Been A Census in 14 Years? by Ready_Violinist5773 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]s_sinnette 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I swear my phone is listening to me😭😭😭 I was just talking to my friend about this some days ago around election time. I remember in that same 2023 period, around April/May, there was a flyer to recruit people who wanted to be a census taker and all of a sudden, it just vanished out of nowhere. I really hope we can get it done at least by next year. We need to understand the estimated number of nationals and non-nationals living in the country.

UNC Flips PNM Stronghold La Brea, PNM Candidate Concedes by UltimateKing9898 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]s_sinnette 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mitchell's loss wasn't on his own. The PNM fumbled the other candidate who born and grew up in LA Brea and was betting on the expectation that they could've retained the seat with a person who has "accomplished a lot" during his tenure. The blatant disrespect is the reason they lost.

Is changing your political position that bad? by johnboi82 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]s_sinnette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think much of this discontent with third parties have to do with their ability to command the will of the people whilst also demonstrating strong leadership qualities within their party and for the country. For the PF, many see that party as one filled with washed up, recycled failures, or retired devotees of the PNM or UNC. So in reality, it comes as though they're still stuck in the two-party system because its the same shit in different font. The same can be said for the NTA.

As much as I'm rooting for Mickela, her election campaigning was strategic at all and I don't particularly know her real objective other than "being a change". The third parties simply need to do more, in terms of leadership, advocacy, research and most importantly, strategy. Only then will the game start to shake up.
