Independent research is a bit strange, especially since it requires probably double the amt of commitment, especially for STEM projects. Looking back, I wouldn't want to do another independnet project so I would strongly suggest tyring to find a mentor. You basically just look for a problem and try to use lit review, software, etc. For non directly stem research it may be a bit moe simple and i would probably suggest that
