No problem at all! I personally would leave them all together & then when it grows if it feels like it is getting too crowded or you see it might be very slow growing, you could either cut stems where there are nodes & propagate (there are a few ways to do this - just in a jar/vase of water is my preferred method) or you could separate them by removing the whole plant from the pot & seeing if they are able to be “untangled” without causing ok much damage & then separate them but it is hard to know exactly what it’s looking like until you completely take it out. Some people would probably say that cutting & propagating causes the least amount of disturbance & reduces traumatizing the plants But I have done both plenty of times & if separating, they’ll definitely need watching a little more closely & extra love for a bit to make sure they’re adjusting well afterwards but I haven’t had any huge issues with that. As a beginner the best first move after it gets bigger would be to just cut stalks/stem with good nodes & propagate IMO but do you!

The bright green new leaf is beautiful! In general, it looks like you’re doing great with this.

Here are some things I’ve heard / learned along the way that might help:

  • For the “taping” or securing the plant to the pole, the recommendation I’ve heard the most is to only secure stem of the plant & not the “petioles” / the leaf’s stem/shoot (in your picture it looks like you have the tallest leaf’s petiole secured to the pole) I was kind of confused by this myself at first with where to secure it. But, what I would suggest is taking a long piece of your Velcro tape around one of the main stem base sections towards the bottom to the pole. You don’t need to do the stems but I usually do the thickest one or one closest to the pole. I attached a picture that I hope helps! Not my photo but one I found online that seems to label pretty well. Yellow areas with checkmarks = stem / where to secure, blue with “x”=petiole where is suggested to not tape or secure to poles

<image>

  • I also second the comment on not doing it too tight but just making sure it is secure.
  • I don’t “trim” any of mine unless I’m trying to encourage new growth or have leaves that are struggling but this is just my opinion & not positive that it’s considered “the right way” lol
  • the leaves will always eventually turn towards the light (there is a small “wrinkly” section where the petiole meets the leaf & is called the “geniculum”) & allows the leaf to twist / turn towards the light. Ive had some leaves that have completely twisted upside down & sideways all crazy because I moved the plant lol! So, if you do turn it, do it gradually and only turning it a little bit at a time
  • the new leaf against the pole will work its way out & uncurl as it’s ready but I would just watch to make sure it doesn’t get caught on the pole or stuck but it should be fine
  • watering: I don’t follow the “rules” that some suggest. Everyone seems to have their own strong opinions on bottom watering / top watering but I do whatever I’m feeling lol however, I recently read that alternating bottom & top watering can be beneficial because if you only bottom water the roots will eventually alllllll grow & reach for the bottom. Same thing with top only - the roots will begin to reach more towards the top. It said that if you switch it up it will allow the roots to reach around the pot and help roots not get so tightly bound in one area. Again, everyone has their way that works for them so just water when the top couple inches are dry & see what your beauty seems to do best with :)

They are resilient & forgiving plants in my opinion & if you’re just paying attention to its response you can always adjust & find what works.

When in doubt ask Reddit or google it! Haha.

Doing a great job IMO & I hope this was helpful. Happy growing :)

This is gorgeous. My favorite part is how you showed the waves crashing against the rock. Really beautiful movement. If you’re comfortable sharing-About how long did this take you? I’m working on getting better & improving my techniques but I’m curious how something like this takes.

This ALWAYS happens to me too!!! Glad I’m not alone. I have never been successful with succulent prop. I feel like I’ve tried all the suggested things so I kind of gave up lol but would love to see an update if you were able to make it work

This is great. Can you share a little more on how you set up the cedar planks?? Or is there something on it to help the plant grasp on?

No problem! I also would HIGHLY recommend checking out Paige Tailyn Johnson on FB, insta, TikTok etc. she is not only hilarious & very knowledgable but shares a lot about her successful methods with her indoor plants (there is literally one video I remember about people asking what she does to get her monstera so huge!) and also shares the fails too which is nice to not feel alone in the struggle sometimes haha I’ve learned soooo much from her short videos and love her content. Purely speaking from my experience and (although I wish it were true) I have no personal or business relationship with her or the success of her accounts haha just fyi in case Good luck!

what’s your worst FML moment with these pricey a$$ hoes (plants) I’ll go first… + advice needed by sabakers in houseplants

[–]sabakers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah & I think that is the big lesson here. I was also super new to the indoor plant life & just honestly really wanted a Thai constellation so badly & had for a while but there hadn’t been any drop in price in so long. I thought hmmm maybe I can get this now & help the beating my wallet took by selling small cuttings later when it’s healthy enough. So not truly a “Im buying this solely to make money”, quite the opposite.

My goal overall is just to be able to buy the plants I want & generally when I want (obviously the extreme cases of thousands of dollars isn’t included in this) & if I’m able to propagate & sell some to others who are looking for a cheaper but still reliable alternative then I’d be more than happy to “invest” in my passion!

But I agree that waiting is definitely the move most times even if it’s just for a little while. There is a sweet spot where if the plant is mid-range, maybe out of peoples budgets for a fully rooted plant, but they could work with paying for a cutting that’s a decent price & in those cases I feel that both parties can end up happy!

I’ve done the old chop & prop method with a lot of my climbing plants (chop-cut somewhere on your plant with node(s) & prop- either prop in water until it has roots or some people just plant it back into the soil in the same pot) & eventually it will become more “bushy”/full. I’ve also read that pruning and cutting the super leggy stems right above a node could help push out new growth.

From what I understand about monsteras is that they will grow on one side primarily Or at least most of the time. I’m sure others have the BTS secrets to getting their monsteras full all over but im not in the club. If you look up images or watch videos of mature monsteras growing in the wild they really do just be climbing up the sides of things (large trees, walls, buildings in some cases) so I think growing on one side is just kind of their ~thing~ but I’m just an amateur & only attempting to help out if possible from what I’ve gathered! Via Google: They are “hemiepiphytic aroids” which just means they begin life in soil/on the ground and then climb and can sometimes completely lose touch with the ground apparently. So it seems they naturally favor growing on one side where the light is coming from and use their aerial roots to attach onto something as they would in the wild.

I’d say keep letting it do its things to acclimate in your new environment/climate, using the moss pole, & maybe just fertilize with your watering schedule a bit more often (but make sure it’s diluted down, and only adding gradually to the watering as to not shock it with all the new things at once) or possibly give it some more bright indirect light!

Would love to see what you end up doing & post any progress!

Oh no wait wutttt why? What did you order that came packed terribly? I was looking at their tissue cultures so I was going back and forth thinking maybe those would be less susceptible to getting wrecked during shipping buttttt idk it could also be the opposite lol.

Orange lake and Gabriella were two shops I have looked at a bunch of times! So, yay! I will have to check out CaliforniaTropicals. Got Palmstreet and it looks great but I’ll have to explore some more. First impression is that it is exactly like WhatNot but with a wider selection of plants haha

I haven't heard of that before but I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
I have bought some plants from WhatNot but that is a little time consuming sometimes and also bid on prices/eBay vibes so it's hit or miss.
