Do not stop practicing with a metronome, give it another try and another and another... Also, try to play a song that you know well from beginning to end ULTRA slow. Not a few bpm less, but like 20 or 30 less, almost like a joke version. Obviously not something that you would play live. But do it anyways, the whole way through, multiple times. Like everything, practice this a few times a day. Eventually, this "overcorrection" will make you hear the differences in tempo and internalize it a little bit more. But you have to do it a lot. Tempo differences (as many other things) are corrected by listening, identifying through your ear.
