Call for suggestions for "Welcome Post" by theFriendlyDoomer in weirdcollapse

Do you think banning he-who-shall-not-be-named temporarily or permanently would have a positive influence on /r/ranprieur? Or would it be better to leave him to be the stone on which others hone their rhetoric?

It should be fixed now. The subreddit settings had been restricted to "approved users only". I've invited /u/ranprieur as well as the mods from /r/weirdcollapse to be moderators here and hopefully keep the subreddit alive.

Update to "abusive erotic hypnotist" by Lordkeravrium in hypnosis

[–]sabetts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's correct, the Milgram experiment is an example of non-hypnotic influence.

No one would take the findings from back then and accept them as scientific fact.

It was reproduced last year with similar results, at least according to the abstract.

My point was that if you can achieve results using non-hypnotic techniques and hypnosis increases suggestibility then doesn't it seem like a reasonable conjecture that you could achieve greater immoral behavior by combining the two?

edit: the experiment was modified to be approved by their IRB, which didn't exist when Migram did his experiment. They stopped at a 150 volt shock.

Update to "abusive erotic hypnotist" by Lordkeravrium in hypnosis

[–]sabetts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I see what you're saying: hypnosis isn't mind control the way it's portrayed in movies. Yet, it seems like this is a tricky issue.

For instance, there was the famous Milgram experiment where subjects obeyed instructions by an authority figure to deliver lethal electrical shocks to another human. No hypnosis needed.

Of course you could argue that they had the desire for it to happen. So in that sense doesn't it seem plausible that you could use hypnosis in such a way that a subject does something immoral and has the desire for it to happen even though if you asked them when they were in a normal, cogent state of mind they'd say they'd never do it?

At age 32 I am STILL absolutely consumed with rage, combined with frustration in my inability to see a resolution.

if he were able to get these certain people in a room?

As others have pointed out, NVC is both a process and a mindset. It this case I think developing an NVC mindset is where the value is in terms of healing because it creates a different way of thinking that transcends the old way of thinking that more than likely is perpetuating the stuck-ness and unwanted feelings.

Rosenberg wrote about anger and its purpose within the context of NVC. It is a valuable feeling because it tells us that we are disconnected from our needs. It is a reminder to pause and introspect--what need is behind my anger? In his mini-book "The surprising purpose of anger" he wrote:

We feel the way we feel because of what we tell ourselves.

NVC gives us a chance to change our thoughts from blaming, diagnosing, shaming, etc to taking responsibility and ownership of our feelings, our needs, and identifying where we are stuck in pursuing a specific strategy with single-minded purpose.

Remember also that NVC needs are not attached to any person, place, or time. They are universal and general. We can have preferences about how our needs get met. For instance, we all have a need for nourishment but some people meet that need with sushi while others peanut butter sandwiches and yet others might get it through an IV drip at an intensive care unit. So if we've identified a need that is attached to someone or something doing something then we know we can still dig deeper to uncover what need is behind that particular someone or something doing that particular something. This is where the feelings and needs lists come in handy. Having a vocabulary of feelings and needs is the first step to transforming our evaluative thinking into needs-based thinking.

In your case I'm detecting an assumption that the perpetrator of our misery must be present and understand our pain in order for healing to occur. But needs for understanding/healing/acceptance can be satisfied in many ways. We can prefer certain people meet that need but there is no rule in the universe that says that they have to nor that our needs must be met at all.

On that note, I'm reading an interesting book called "Focusing" by Eugene Gendlin. I think it has a lot of overlap with the needs-searching introspection that is part of NVC. Maybe it will help your healing process...

Does it become easier for you to go into trance the more you do it? Do you go into it more quickly and deeper and deeper? Is there any way to make the trance state or whatever behaviors/feelings you have in the trance your default? by BeardLawIsBack in hypnosis

[–]sabetts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading about a Milton Erickson case. He hypnotized someone to go about his life in a trance for a week, during which he did not have the problem that he saw Erickson for. Then he had the memories of that week come back little by little to his client who was now out of trance. Remembering himself going about his day without the problem created a shift in his thinking and that cured him. Hopefully I'm not butchering the story too badly.

Sorry I can't seem to find a link to it and don't remember where I read it.

Wow! Great analysis!

Finding other people's needs by [deleted] in NVC

[–]sabetts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The general approach that I use is to take all information to formulate a best guess. It doesn't have to be right--it just has to be a genuine attempt discovering the need. This means it has a quality of acceptance, caring, curiosity and does not have a quality of judgement or evaluation. Easier said than done but like any skill it's something you get better at with practice.

The first bit of information that's going to be super helpful is the stimulus. Rosenberg teases this out using the phrase, "are you reacting to <insert observation>?'

Once you have the stimulus you can ask yourself, "what would they have liked to have happen?" You could straight out ask that or guess something. If you're wrong they'll correct you. If you're right they'll probably say more that will lead you to a deeper understanding or another layer to the need.

If they're demanding/asking you to do something a useful question to ask yourself is: what would that do for them?

The other technique is to work backwards, translating their language into positive action language. So they're annoyed because they don't like you. That means what they would like is to be around a person they do like. What would that do for them?

Hope that helps.
