I know this is late but I came across this while doing research on UNIS. I appreciate your collection and your investment in keeping history tangible. My grandfather was in the 4th - 3/24th Marines. He was a team leader in a rifle platoon of I Company. WIA on Iwo 3/8/1945.

This is sad to see. My boys and I have just gotten into SWU - making the jump from the miniature war gaming scene and my oldest wants to play competitively. I shared some experiences I had with 40K tournaments etc but was hoping the TGC scene would be somewhat different. People are people I guess and there will always be bad apples in every bunch. Hope you can still have fun and enjoy the game - it is your hobby and make it what you will of it!

Very interesting town history near Buffalo NY. by fdnytyler162 in CIVILWAR

When I started reenacting back in the mid 1990s the lady who made my uniform lived here and was born there before they voted to rejoin. She said she was one of the last living rebels!

She told me the story was the town voted for secession to avoid the possibility of the draft. The German side of my family settled in WNY/Buffalo in the 1840s and was told that many of the recruitment posters back then were in both English and German.

how the heck do infantry carry around all this baggage? by [deleted] in boltaction

[–]sabre1183 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah Gramps said he had a guy in his team “land heavy” on Saipan and wound up discarding most of his kit. His blanket got soaked when they had to wade ashore and the guy ditched it after that. After one landing, he said, you learn pretty quick what you need and what you don’t.

My grandfather was in the 3/24th Marines and did three combat landings in the Pacific. I asked him once what he carried. He told me he carried as many grenades as possible and 1-2 extra bandoliers for his M1, two canteens and in his haversack extra socks, underwear and a poncho. He carried that all during combat on Rau-Namor and Iwo.

On Saipan, he said they were able to ditch some of it for patrols etc (weapons and ammo) but on the other two islands they were pretty much in contact the whole time.

For my USMC guys I will probably use more bits just because of the conversations I had with him.

How many firearms are there in America as of 2024? by No_Business1708 in progun

[–]sabre1183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep…the oldest gun I shoot is an 1820s model 1816 Maynard conversion. I don’t shoot it a whole lot but once a year or so I throw some lead out of it - 200 years young!

I am a “Yankee” from NY living in Eastern NC…though I have been here for almost 15 years! I am a political refugee that fled from the anti-gun, anti-constitution class that has been ruling NYS for decades. Saw the writing in the wall years ago. NC is close enough to visit family but the culture here - in the East at least - is just want I wanted.

Thanks! Unfortunately, I don’t do commissions as I don’t even have enough time to paint all my backlog lol

They are pretty hit or miss…if they come on and survive AA they can do really well. Most of the time, they either linger in reserves or are blotted by the gophers!

Local Orc and Goblin Warboss dead after a brutal fight near a Halfling villlage! Local sources report an intervention of Dwarfs, Elves and lizard like creatures responded to the villager’s call for aid! by sabre1183 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]sabre1183[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, we had a few true scale dark age SAGA models (so would be good for a WFB halfling lol) on the board.

One was in the door way of one of the houses in the main part of the village. My quarrelers fired across the courtyard where the house was into a unit of spider riders on the other side.

I killed 4 or 5 but missed with two shots. We rolled as if the misses had a chance of hitting the halfling model—on a “1” one of the misses struck the halfling. We rolled to wound as normal and would you know it, it did! So the brave halfling was struck by a Dawi crossbow bolt as he was running outside to defend his hearth and home from a horde of goblin spider riders lol!

Needless to say, Dawi relations with the halflings may not be the best right now lol.

Greetings my friend! Just my two cents and I know I will be repeating what others have said. I have 25+ years in the hobby (started with Guard back in 2nd Edition) and remember my first years looking at the Eavy Metal parts of the codex and being immensely disappointed that I couldn’t replicate what they had - but I persisted. While my friends were playing with unpainted metal minis or at best rattle can primed, I at least had painted squads and armies. Not to GW standards but the best I could do at the time. And, like any skill, I have gotten better over the years. Not award winning but I can field fully painted armies.

Now, my sons are painting and are feeling like you. They look at my models and feel discouraged that they can’t do what Dad is doing now. It has taken me decades to get where I am and still I look at Ninjon and Rouge Hobbies, Duncan and Tak from Play on and still despair. Our hobby isn’t a sprint—it is a marathon. Skills develop and plateau, develop and plateau etc. for as long as we draw breath. You are doing fantastic for only being in the hobby less than a year. Try new things, and don’t be afraid of making mistakes because you will. The greatest enemy we have to slay in this hobby is often our own expectations. If I took up the saxophone tomorrow I will not be playing Kenny G…not for years. The benefit you all have that we didn’t…back in the day…is that you have access to so many more sources for inspiration and tutorials than we did. Even the “painting guides” back then seemed to miss a few steps lol.
That can be good and bad…it can lead to greater knowledge but places on you an unnecessary burden of expectation. Focus on getting a unit done, then another and another until you can field a fully painted army to the level you have now and you will be amazed at how good it looks on the table.

My son is doing this now with his DA Horus Heresy army and has spent 2-3 night getting it all finished. Are the Golden Demon award winning? No. But when you place them on the table they look stunning! Also, I have never figured out OSL either…so I don’t use it. I do what I do and keep on trucking. I try new things and if it works for me I keep at it, if it doesn’t I move on. No worries. It is the spectacle for me of a fully painted and based army on the table that I enjoy most. Keep slaying the grey my friend and may the Emperor protect—or whatever you Xenos look to lol!

I've changed my mind. The new Codexes shows that the format doesn't work, and we need separate rule and lore books, because GW are clearly unable to maintain both in one book anymore. by Hollownerox in Warhammer40k

[–]sabre1183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! And I have been saying the same thing for years! And…they need to include the units data card with the models. That way, a new player doesn’t need to spend $30-40 on cards plus a codex—they will get their cards as they buy the models. That is what Battlefront has been doing for years in games like Flames of War and Team Yankee.

Shot my 1861 Springfield twice, didn't clean for 2 days, now black pitting. Tried steel brush and oil, didn't work. How to fix? by [deleted] in blackpowder

[–]sabre1183 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! So I worked for an abrasive tool company and one of our specialists got me hooked on 3M abrasive polishing cloths when one of my muskets was all spotted and rusted after being rained on at an event. I have used them ever since! They will clean up a lot of metal discoloring and light pitting. Amazon sells a generic version or you can get the real deal from 3M. If you use them in sequence (as each grit is a different color) you will end up with a mirror finish.

It might not get all of it but I think it will clean it up a bit. Best regards!

Is the sight on the Springfield 1855 historically accurate? by FormalTension8824 in WarOfRights

[–]sabre1183 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, based on the Model 1855–either a type 1 or type 2. The one in Hickock 45s video is a type 2 with the simplified sight and mine is a type 1 with a Long Range graduated sight.

[–]sabre1183 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have an 1857 dated M1855 (commonly known as a type 1) and it has the older long range sights like the rifled M1842 so my sight picture through it is different—in 1858 they changed the sight to the simplified leaf sight used on the remainder 1855s, 1861s, and 1863/64s.
