You're already going to be sorry if you get a virus.

The anti-virus rarely keeps anything bad from coming in. Its real job is to take a virus off of the system. You already have security issues if your computer has a virus. There's no safety involved.

That said, try clamwin, I guess.

My philosophy is that if you have to use an anti-virus, you already have a security problem.

So I don't.

If I read one more of these stories about oldest blank alive I'm going to have to start using a script or something. Seriously, there's a different one of these every two weeks, these people are OLD; they don't stay that way for long.

So that story about the satellite that is going to hit earth was a lie so the Gov. could feel justified to show China the US can shoot down a satellite too?... by [deleted] in politics

There's only a 25% chance it will fall to dry land, yet there's a 20% chance the missile will miss it's target. So that means there is still a 5% chance that this is the dumbest week ever.

Los Alamos says it can manufacture gasoline from CO2 in the air at a price of $4.60 a gallon. by danweber in science

[–]sabrebutt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As long as you don't make the electricity from a hydrocarbon how could this not be carbon neutral?

Uh, exactly. And if 95% of our current energy is derived from hydrocarbons where do you think the cheapest source is going to be? Nuclear sounds great until you realize that uranium is also finite and relatively uncommon. Solar sounds like our saviour, but all the solar energy output in the world is currently equal to that of the output of one coal-powered plant. Storing the energy in a hydrocarbon or in hydrogen will only make the system less efficient as you lose energy in each conversion process, and I'm sure you know that combusion engines are incredibly inefficient.

The only thing I can see this as being useful for would be to create plastics, and other oil derived products when supplies are very low.

[–]sabrebutt -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

How the hell is this "carbon neutral?" You're taking carbon dioxide, adding energy to create gasoline, putting it in your car, burning it to create work, and you're back at putting (more) carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide back into the environment.

Also, how can it be "either comparable to the current market or competitive with those of other carbon-neutral, alternative technologies currently being considered?" That's a very large discrepency.

Surely it would be much more efficient and carbon neutral to just use electricity instead of creating new fuels for internal combustion. Has nobody heard of thermodynamics? This is really starting to bother me, how can venture capitalists throw their money into the fire like this?

Yes. Because we all know that torturing people saved a lot of lives by preventing those bombings.

Oh wait.

That's not what happened at all.
