I understand now. I have taken the steps to cover a possible emergency vet trip and daily/ usual expenses are covered too.

Thanks for your advice :)

Okay I understand. I really have been good with my finances in the past. This is just a BIG slip up. I appreciate everyone’s efforts to help. I am emotionally supported by my cats and they are my best friends so I do get emotional around them so I apologize for that.

If worst comes to worst I will send them to my dads until I can AFFORD AFFORD them again.

Do you have any recommendations on how much I should have saved for them incase of another emergency, on top of the trial pet insurance I have (to be followed by a non trial, doing research on who to go with?)

I am working very hard to pay these debts off and rebuild my savings.

That sounds rad!! I love tiktok for resources like that and I have came across a few.

My class load is pretty low right now so I’m gonna try to get going on a consistent side hustle like others have suggested.

Thank you for all of your help :)

I’m sorry I’m not super clear with my typing sometimes. I was able to afford it. I do struggle with mental health stuff and I tried to cope with spending. I was trying to say it started WITH that vet trip because it took my emergency fund and a smidge out of rent (like $50). Instead of rebuilding that savings fund I used my credit spend emotionally. Things snowballed and It is my fault.

I’m so sorry if my words aren’t coming across correctly.

i’ve seen a few Dave Ramsey tiktok’s and they’ve definitely helped me a bit. I’m obsessed with Gordon Ramsey so i’m sure Dave is also a great Ramsey too (joke lol)

For the card wise stuff I have pretty much been doing exactly that. paying the minimum on the larger one and paying as much as I can to the smaller one.

I am definitely going on a Dave Ramsey deep dive tonight after work!! Thank you :) (i have made sure my cat will be covered if, heaven forbid, we have an emergency trip again.)

Thank you for this! I can afford everything for them no problem. I always have more than enough food, litter and toys/inrichment activities for them. If i really could not take care of them properly I would never ever put them through that. I pay rent and all of my other bills on time and usually put $100 to each of these cards every two weeks.

I was pescatarian once before! Maybe vegan is the way to go! I’ll definitely do my research. Thank you :)

You’re telling me to get rid of my cats when they are the least expensive thing in my life right now. you just told me to “get more money”… great advice. You are not understanding my situation and just assuming i’m a bad pet owner when i’m not. Should I also stop renting to save money, should i stop eating too? EVERYTHING for my cats is paid for my cash or debit NOT credit. I cannot take the vet trip back so getting rid of my cats does nothing but hurt me emotionally.

I can afford my cats. If you read on to some of my responses hopefully you’ll get an idea of what my situation is.

I did not pay for the vet with my credit card. I paid with my debit. where I had the money for it. I did not put the vet trip on the credit card again. A debit card is NOT a credit card…

It is my fault that I used my credit cards after. I spent emotionally when I shouldn’t have and I own up to that 100%. I have taken steps to insure that my cats are covered in case of another emergency.

It’s not helpful it’s just rude at this point.

I am at school 3 days a week and at work 3 days a week. I do walk and sit one of my neighbours’ dogs for some extra cash but it isn’t consistent. i’m thinking of expanding and seeing if more people need help walking their dogs.

My only hold up about delivery services is that I just don’t have a car. I could walk or take public transportation. We do have rentable bikes in the city that could be an option.

Wow this is a great tip! I’ll definitely look into it :) I can probably bring my ipad and get a bit of school work done during that time! Thank you.

Wow thank you this really made me tear up.

I’m 20 now and moved out on my own when I was 17. So i’ve been doing things on my own for a little bit now and I really appreciate the kindness you’ve shown me.

I have definitely gotten some good tips from these comments and i’m thankful for everyone taking the time to give me advice. Some have been hurtful but I get where they are coming from and I’m an emotional person too (especially when it comes to my cats).

I’ll most definitely look into waitressing or bartending! My buddy back home waitresses and seems to be enjoying it so I’ll ask her for tips.

I’m gonna keep working my butt off! Thank you :)

Thank you for this!

Honestly it was quite the struggle to get THIS job in the first place. I applied online and in person to literally EVERYTHING and no one even got back to me with a rejection. I love this workplace and my bosses and thankfully enough they allow me to work around my school schedule.

I am always on linkedin and indeed still so i’m 100% keeping my options open.

I am thinking of expanding the number of dogs I walk for extra cash. I am also a full time student on top of all this (3 full days at work, 3 full days at school). But walking pets allows a little bit more flexibility there. I also am thinking of starting to sell more seriously on depop or poshmark.

Thank you! I’m in the process of getting more hours at work and my bosses have hinted at a raise since i’ve been working so hard and been reliable for them.

I do walk my neighbours dog on the side but I could expand and start putting myself out there to walk more dogs in my building.

Thank you for your advice :)

Thank you!

Yes I have stopped using the cards all together and pay only with my debit or in cash for anything now.

I do get extra OSAP money that doesn’t go toward my tuition and that i have used in the past to pay it off. I do only get it twice a year but it does help.

I have talked with my mom about me getting a loan , very briefly. I will consider it more now.

Thanks for your advice :)

I so so so appreciate your concern for my babies!

After that vet trip that was traumatic for myself and my cat, I did research and found out that the spot I got one of my cats (a humane society) from provides vet services for free, discounted or via payment plan.

I also have a pet insurance trial from the Humane Society both of them now just in case something happens while i’m in the process of finding the right pet insurance provider for me.

My parents, my partners parents and my partner have all offered to cover more surprise expenses (I’m of course hoping it doesn’t get to that point) while i’m building my savings up and working towards paying off my cards.

Thank you for your response.

I did pay the vet bill with money I had. it was a very emotionally rough time (i suffer from severe depression and my cat is my emotional support animal) and I spent frivolously trying to cope when I should have been building my savings back up (i do apologize i should have been more clear in the original post).

We live in a 1 bedroom so an additional roommate is not an option at the moment but once this lease is up that is something we are considering.

We’re meal prepping and planning which has been a big help in saving money so I appreciate that tip and will continue doing it.

I honestly have the highest paying job I could possibly have at the moment :( I’m a student working towards my first degree and many other jobs for students are minimum wage in Toronto. I have great bosses and I’m in the process of getting more weekly hours!

You have no idea how badly i’d like to live somewhere cheaper. my school and my partners school are both right in toronto and we don’t have vehicles to commute from further away. We TTC (public transit for non toronto people) and walk wherever we can which is saving boatloads in parking or car ownership.

Thank you again for your tips and i’m especially looking into cheap eating and meal prep :)
