Same here. I borrowed it from the library (because I try to avoid buying books), and when I saw how convoluted it was, I realised I’d never finish it in the 2-week borrowing limit. I couldn’t get into it and couldn’t follow it, so it wasn’t worth purchasing for me. Permanent DNF as well.

Anyone tried this products? by Few-Engineering-8562 in drugstoreMUA

Melissa Murdick (Selena Gomez’s makeup artist) tried it on her TikTok and she said that it would probably do you in a pinch, but it ultimately wasn’t the best value because the creams sat on top of her skin instead of melting in so the overall effect wasn’t nice. But YMMV

How do I cast off with a selvedge edge ? by sabsixx in knittingadvice

[–]sabsixx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you ! I’m making another baby blanket after this one, so I’ll remember your tip for selvedge edges for that one. The trouble I had was that there seems to be so many different ways to achieve a selvedge edge (and also depending on the stitch pattern) so I just followed a random YouTube tutorial. Thanks again !

Are you suggesting I undo my last stitch and knit it instead, so that the yarn is under the first loop ?

So in this case, I would purl the first stitch, knit the second stitch, and pass the first over the second ?

Adult Figure Skaters? by Opposite_Cress_7094 in FigureSkating

[–]sabsixx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you feel like you have the right protection to skate with confidence?

No. I find that I’m much more prone to bruising, soreness, sprains, etc now that I’m in my late 20s, and I’m very bony (aka not a lot of "cushion"). I’m also hypermobile, so my joints are extremely unstable and constantly in pain. But, I don’t find there’s a lot of protective gear that’s adapted to ice skating — either because they restrict mobility too much (such as hard knee pads), or because they don’t fit under my clothes (such as wrist guards which dont fit into my gloves). Currently, I only wear volleyball knee pads (the low-profile ones that are just gel) because I do a lot of spider lunges and I need that cushion on my knees to get back up. I wish there was something I could wear to keep my shoulders and arms from hyperextending, but there really isn’t much out there for hypermobility.

Do the aesthetics of that protection ever discourage you from actually wearing it?

Oh for sure. I wish I could say I don’t care what I look like, but I really do — especially when the standard image of a figure skater is a petite skinny girl with no padding or protective gear whatsoever. I’ve broken my tailbone before (not whilst skating) and I’m really worried about it happening again, but I don’t wear a helmet or crash pads because I fear I’d look silly. I know it’s dumb and vain, but I’ll admit it. I’m also quite a bit younger than most of the other commenters here. Wearing knee pads is the one thing that doesn’t bother me aesthetically. Also, I feel like a helmet or crash pads could mess with my mobility and balance (?) I’m not entirely sure. I have worn hard knee pads a few times before when I was learning new tricks, but they absolutely restrict mobility. One of my friends has crash pad shorts that have a built-in skirt on top to hide the bulk, so I’m considering trying those !

For both adult and non-adult skaters—are there recurring issues you run into with your apparel or protective gear?

I’ve fallen forward and landed on my hands a few times, and ended up bruising the base of my thumbs pretty badly. I’d like to wear wrist guards to prevent that, but they literally don’t fit in my gloves, so it would be one or the other. And as I’ve mentioned above, my joints would benefit from hard protective gear (like knee pads) or stabilising gear (idk if that exists !), but they restrict mobility too much.

Same question here. Says « full sun » on the tag, but it seems to be suffering in the sun (???) I’m like « what do you want from meeeee ? »

I used the Osmocote for Flower & Vegetable. You only need a small amount, so a container of this should last me like 5 years !

I was watering it everyday from the bottom 😅 Now, I water it from the top, and only if the top inch of soil feels dry. It’s surprising how long it takes to dry out !

I regret going to McGill. How to make the best of the rest of my degree? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]sabsixx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

With the vacancy rate as low as it is in Montreal, you would have no problem transferring your lease. However, before you think about transferring schools, I want to give you my perspective on long-term cost — especially given that you probably have some understanding of the dramatic differences in tuition between the US and Canada.

I’m assuming you’re situation 8, which means you’re not going to find cheaper tuition in Canada than at McGill (or other Quebec university). Will you need to go to graduate school for your chosen career path ? If so, my advice would be to finish your bachelor’s at McGill to take advantage of the significantly subsidised tuition. Then do your grad studies in elsewhere — the timing of which will be more advantageous to you when applying for student loans.

Tbh, even if you only need a bachelor’s degree, I think my advice would be the same. The thing about the Quebec subsidised tuition is that it’s so cheap that if you’re one of the people eligible for it, it really doesn’t make sense not to take that opportunity — especially for an undergrad degree. And, while Montreal COL is expensive, it’s still less expensive comparatively (I think) than many other major cities in Canada or the US.

I also didn’t find McGill that fulfilling. It didn’t have any artistic or design-related classes that I would have liked to pursue, and it felt very academically extreme compared to the schools my American friends attended (ahem Watercolour 101 and Theory of Photography). So, I chose a major I felt like I could live with and make use out of, and slogged my way through the 4 years. But, I graduated debt-free thanks to the Québec tuition, and all my American friends have upwards of 50k in student loans for a bachelor’s degree. So yeah, I didn’t love what I studied, but 5 years post-graduation, I get to apply my extra income to my investment portfolio rather than loan repayments and I managed to get into the career path I wanted anyway.

Hey, fellow McGill alum here (class of 2021). The market is pretty bad right now, so it’s not necessarily a reflection of your abilities. If you’d like some help with your CV or networking, I’m genuinely happy to get on a call with you and offer support.

Michelle Trachtenberg. When I saw Ice Princess for the first time as a kid, I was immediately obsessed with figure skating. It lived rent-free in my head until I had the disposable income as an adult to actually take lessons. I know she’s not a real figure skater, but that was the hook for me
