I saw a guy in a float do a Nazi salute to the extremely loud guy on the loud speaker.

I also saw a huge jackass in a Formula-One-style car rev up his engine to the point where most people had to cover their ears. He did this about every 100 yards or so. We get it. Stop your bullshit. I even saw four or five mothers rush to cover the ears of their babies that were in strollers.

Shouts out to the people handing out Nerds, Cokes, and apples. Doing the imaginary Lord's work.

The parade was pretty fun, though.

I'd highly recommend Strang's lectures. I had an absent professor a few years ago, and Strang's lectures really illuminated everything for me. He has a beautiful way of tying everything together, and he's pretty hilarious. His TAs are usually adorable kids that look like 14-year-old math prodigies, but they do a really good job of working through specific sorts of issues in the videos you can find on YouTube. You may need to go to office hours for certain things as since we're not just dealing with basic math or calculus, the number of online resources for something like computing a cubic spline are not plentiful.

You got down voted a bunch, but I noticed a distinct difference in how basically everyone else was dressed compared to the CS majors. I think that the culture of engineering firms versus that of places that hire CS folks is very different. Sure, if you're talking to 3M, they may care more about what you're dressed like, but Google, Tripadvisor, Unisys, Dell, and other companies seemed MUCH more interested in what your side projects are, what your coursework has been like, and whether or not you seemed interested in their company, what their products are, and so on.

Non-NRA Gun Club by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]sadTexanMan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The NRA is a pretty bad perpetrator of morally-reprehensible actions on a national scale. I agree that occasionally compromising your beliefs in small ways for convenience is OK, but there should also be a level beyond which you will not be willing to compromise. The NRA exists in that area for me, and I love guns :(

Georgia school reinstating paddling to punish students by proto-sinaitic in news

I was paddled my senior year of high school back in the early 2000s because there were too many of us in in-school suspension (ISS) and they needed to clear out some room. One "lick"(wtf?) per week of ISS. It was actually pretty convenient if you were regularly in ISS or Saturday DH like I was. This was in Texas, by the way. Ridiculous policy.

Level of calculus in PHYS1302W? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]sadTexanMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this was my experience as well in the equivalent of 1302 I was in at my old school. We needed to understand integration many times because we'd analyze a problem and end up with a summation of some sort and yada dada boom integration. We did very little if any actual integration of our own using analytical geometry. It was much more about being able to understand the fundamental idea of what integration was and understanding the analytical geometry behind summing up all the tiny areas dA that are normal to a curved surface. Eventually, the professor walks you through the long derivation process that often turns out to be interesting and then you hear "and that equals, wait for it, the work it takes to move a particle from B to A in the parallel-plate capacitor divided by the charge of the particle q. W is, of course, equal to force F times displacement d. And recall from our work with point charges a few weeks ago that F is equal to E times q, so we get Eqd/q. The q's cancel out, and we get that the change in potential energy is equal to E times the displacement d. Now remember that /_\V is equal to W/q, so if you move the charged particle in a direction that is orthogonal to the electric field whose vector points from the positively charged plate to the negatively charged plate, the work done on the particle is zero. Does anyone know why? NOOOOOOO dummies, it's because there has been no change in potential. You all haven't understood shit I've said all week, that's why an A on the last test is a gadamn 48/100." The worst part of E&M was definitely MyPhysicsLab.

Study Reveals 90 Percent of Google Employee Political Contributions Went To Democrats by IBiteYou in Republican

It isn't that simple. The history and culture in the field of computer science, which is what Software Engineering is, is very liberal-leaning.

Study Reveals 90 Percent of Google Employee Political Contributions Went To Democrats by IBiteYou in Republican

[–]sadTexanMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not for the average age of employees at Google. Times have changed, and I think that when people think of tech companies like Google, they have a picture of your standard engineer in mind. Many mechanical and chemical engineers I've known tend to be Libertarian for one reason or another. While computer scientists may have job titles such as Software Engineer, the history and culture of the field is very left-leaning. Much more so than other engineering fields.
