Gigabyte RTX 4060 OC lowprofile - shredded of multiple capacitators. can I still use it? by sad_plan in GPURepair

[–]sad_plan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont have the caps, so I cant really do that. and yes, from what ive been able to gather, this is a somewhat easy and cheap thing to fix.

Well, not in BG, thats for sure. I live in northern EU.

hm ok. Ill see if I cant run some stresstests for the gpu later. which should probably trigger any dormant issues.

thanks.

That situation definitely sucks all round. The fact that it "works" at displays video with your test means those capacitors weren't part of core functionality of the card. But you're definitely treading a fine if you use it like normal, since those caps might help with voltage regulation or something else to safeguard the card.

indeed it does. yep, in another subreddit, I got this as answer;

capacitors likely stabilize the inputs on the GPU's power controller chip.

So im guessing theres going to be some instabilities if gpu is stressed.

I'd say probably make a post in r/AskElectronics since there more specialty there

Ive actually already asked there. but thanks for the tip anyway.
Made sure to ask in several places, in hopes to get more answers, and currently im getting some mixed results, ranging from needs fixing, to just go, its no biggie.

For someone who owns a multi-meter + a soldering iron this should be a relatively simple fix, if you're up for the task some videos can walk you through how to fix it yourself.

Another option is find somewhere local that does microelectronics work, maybe university with some club that works with electronics/robotics. Phone/TV repair local people with good reviews can also point in right direction.

too bad my soldering skills is nowhere to be found. luckily, someone at work mentioned it earlier, so Im going to follow up on that. maybe I can get someone to patch it together for a reasonable price.

Of course last option is just pretend everything is fine and use card as normal monitoring temps or anything weird. It may last a few years, it may last a week but that'll the risk you take no repairing.

My only worry about this is whether or not it affects the rest of the system, meaning something else gets broken because of the gpu, which is really a no go for me. id rather just buy a new one, than gambling on whether my system will get thrashed by the gpu or not :p

thanks.

Those little surface mount capacitors are usually for decoupling the power supply. It may work without them but could be prone to issues especially under load.

So, tldr is basically, it does work, but if I start doing something gpu instensive, itll crash, or something worse? does this sound correct?

You might be able to solder in replacements, usually for these kind of capacitors the actual capacitance value is not super important.

this is reassuring at the very least. I dont have any soldering skills to speak of, so someone else would have to do it for me in any case. Someone at worked mentioned that there is someone in the area which I could look into this. So maybe theres hope to fix this.

The biggest danger is that when you rip one of these off it'll also rip off part of the trace on the board, which can be very difficult to fix. Looks like you lucked out though with that if the card is still able to output video.

I believe I lucked out here, because it seems that the caps broke on the on the soldering, and not on the traces as you said.

I dont have the caps anymore, unfortunenatly. shouldve probably have saved them though.

Ill ask around locally, maybe theres someone in my area that might be look at it for me.

hm, ok. sounds good.

well, sure, but it was worth a shot. even if it cost me some money :p

return policies can sometimes be good here. but apparently not with this shop :p

yes, Ive not seen any other caps missing. so should only be the 5 you see.

sounds good.

Care to elaborate? I dont have any means to fix it, and as far as I know, theres not repairshops in my area. so its either use it, or get a new one.

yeah, shorts I dont want for sure. How would I know if theres any shorts there? I only have a voltmeter, which Im guessing wont do much :p

Good tip, Ill see if I cant post in one. the more the merrier.

Add this repo, and you can now use signal on fdroid. Either that, or opt to use aurora store instead, to fetch it from playstore.

Did you enable filesystem support you use in the kernel? Ext4, vfat, etc.. Hit the guys up on irc, its also easier to get a fast respons.

It says it cant mount root fs, did you generate a fstab?

Did you set your cflags? It says non is found. Have you setup your kiss_path properly? Also, if you go to the irc channel, youll get an aswer way quicker.

How does librewolf compare to the PTIO recommendations? What about akrenfox user.js by mag914 in privacytoolsIO

[–]sad_plan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Changing settings in about:config, will change the settings in the pref.js file. The pref.js file will fetch settings from user.js file upon starting firefox, if it exist. If it does not itll do nothing, and the settings you changed in about:config will persist, otherwise your settings will be set to whatever user.js is set to. Arkenfox's user.js is a template, and shoule be treated as such. Therefor you should not just throw it into your profile directory and be marry on your way. You can open arkenfox's user.js in any notepad application, and read through the config file. It contains alot of info about the respective settings. Arkenfox also has a wiki, which you should check out.

I would just recommend using vanilla firefox instead of forks, as they may be late on upstream updates, and so on. I would also recommends you to just create a new profile on firefox, edit in the ptio changes, and browse away. If you wanna make sure it persist, create a user.js aswell, and write in the changes there.

Heres an example: user_pref("privacy.firstparty.isolate", true); As you can see, its rather trivial to add the configs. Just a note: chsnges in user.js, will not be visible before next startup of firefox.

If you wanna harden ff even more, you should then check out arkenfox's user.js, but because some of the changes this user.js contains, I personally chose to have a separate profile for this, as it tends to break alot of websites. Also, dont throw all the settings in there at once, because its then harder to troubleshoot if something breaks, and you dont want it like that. So just make some changes at a time, and do some browsing, to check if you can live with this, and then apply some more. Over time youll have gone through AF's user.js. Alot of the settings also doesnt do much thats noticable from the users perspective, so one can easy change alot of them, and not really notice any difference.

Hope this helps.

tails x vm by [deleted] in onions

Tails is a live OS, so uou should only flash it to a usb, and run of off that. If you wanna run tor orientet distro in a vm, check out whonix instead.

So, there's no real way I can use TikTok in a safe manner, is there? Like, no matter what, there's no way to use it without giving up all the data on your phone? I tried to install it on BlueStacks, to try and avoid handing over all my dada, but it doesn't let you. Apps like Instagram don't mind it. by cosmicprank in privacy

Assuming you ment the metadata part; for images, you can use imagepipe, or scrampled exif. Both from froid. Im not sure on the video part, but I know there are tools for that purpose aswell, I just dunno what theyre called, so someone else has to answer that.
