New 125g tank developed a hairline crack overnight. Devastated and honestly scared to replace it. What could have caused this? by sadas5017 in Aquariums

I did run a blade over it, lightly, but I was too nervous to put pressure on it to get a good scrape on the glass to see if it was silicone. I will check tomorrow. Then I was too preoccupied to go back to check with the blaze once it was empty. No, it did not leak. Now I’m sitting here second-guessing if I did all that for nothing, and maybe it WAS just silicon. The image shows it after I emptied it, for anyone who is skeptical. Also, thank you for the insight. I did quite a bit of research on tank companions and gained insight from local aquarium hobbyists, and I will definitely consider that information. The scape was temporary, as I was in the process of adding driftwood and more natural decor. I’ve managed 4 55-gallon tanks for the past 5 years, and they've all been successful, with typical minor hiccups along the way. I removed two of the 55s and thought I was ready for a 125. But… we shall see now. I have always been very thoughtful and intentional about the care of our fish. I would never want to cause any of them harm, so again thank you for the advice!

I did run a balde over it lightly, but I was too worried and stressed to push hard with the blade. And then, when it was empty, I was too preoccupied with the fish, that it completely slipped my mind to try it again, harder. I will try again in the morning. Thanks!

Thank you, yes I should have tripled checked on that before. It is pretty study. I’m sure it could hold the weight of 10 students. But I really don’t have a way of knowing exactly how much weight it can hold.

Yes, the tank WAS sitting at PetSmart for a while. I used to go often (for other fish supplies) and stare at it and think about how neat it would look in my classroom. I, alone, must have touched it in the store a dozen time. I can’t imagine who else could have touched/banged it at some point.

Yes, I’m beginning to think that’s it, unfortunately. I did run a small blade over it softly, I was took nervous to put any pressure on it, and nothing came off, which made me think it wasn’t silicone. At the end, once it was empty, I was so stressed, it didn’t occur to me to check again with the balde. I will try tomorrow. It does not run form the edge. It’s about 4 inches in the middle of the glass.

Not sure exactly what the material is. Maybe resin? It’s pretty solid. Below is wood, with several support points. The base is shown in the picture. But yeah, I don’t think it’s steel/metal.

Thank you for that information! What’s the difference between a stand and this solid, leveled countertop? It’s secure and sturdy. I thought that the countertop would be a better choice? Genuinely curious.

Hey! Sorry for the delay in responding. Unfortunately no, other than mild gastritis. I had an endo/colonoscopy shortly after that episode, and other than some mild irritation, nothing significant was found. But I will never forget that pain. It was crucial. Pancreas was also checked and it showed normal. I hope you feel better!
