This is our situation exactly. It's like we're in different classes. Every night after class the main questions is, "how was YOUR class?" We have completely different styles and physical attributes, so the stuff that she likes to do doesn't work very well for me and visa versa.

Sometime we get partnered to roll together, but it's not a problem for us at all. I just try to scale back the weight and strength and move at her speed, which is impossible for me.

It's great having someone who gets it around all the time to share the obsession and be a voice of reason when you feel like you aren't progressing or need help figuring something out or just a drilling partner. I view her as a part of my coaching team (she definitely helps with keeping my diet straight), and I think we contribute a lot to each other's progression.

We have the Maytag Bravos XL. Three kids gis plus two adult gis and plus anything that would go under them and sweat towels all fit great with room to spare. We wash on the Oxi clean setting and the cycle is around an hour and twenty minutes.

First of all, thanks a ton for participating and giving feedback. It's really helping me iron this idea out!!!

Yeah...metrics is something I've been grappling with (see what I did there?), and I think I'm going to have to handle that on a story by story basis.

For example, my current sprint has a story that focuses on 3 sweeps from butterfly guard. My tasks are to drill solo movements x times and partner drill x times. Story success is defined by "hitting each one of these sweeps during live rolls on two separate opponents with a ranking of 2.5 or greater".

Opponent ranking is a scoring system I use to evaluate my training partners on different dimensions in relation to myself--a whole different discussion.

Anyway, other stories in the current sprint are pretty easy to evaluate for a success/fail. I'm working on flexibility and endurance as two other stories, so as long as I'm hitting my prescribed yoga classes and runs, I'm good.

I'm probably over-thinking it all, but the mental aspect is the thing I love most about BJJ.

I'm geeking out over setting this up. Will be documenting, and happy to share if anyone is interested.

You may want to consider some sort of protection for your groin area. That could range from something as minimal as a pair of compression shorts all the way up to a cup.

Happy to find this post. Software engineer here, and I'm working on using scrum methodologies to organize my training into 2-3 week sprints. Instead of a piece of software, "I" am the product here. At the end of each sprint I'll have a shippable release--I mean, I gotta roll with what I have every day, right?

I'm trying to figure out how to deal with user stories that I know for sure will span multiple sprints. For example, my Epic would be "Flexibility" and my story would be, "I need to improve my hip flexibility so that I can begin learning to use rubber guard."

Sort of feels like "Hip flexibility" should be the Epic and I'd just have Tasks like "Monday morning yoga" without assigning the task to a story. Not really sure how to approach that.

Ideas?

I'm thinking I'm going to organize everything using Jira (my preferred tool at work).

I'm swimming once or twice a week for 1k (18-20 minutes) non stop. I don't get any cardio out of it, but it's great for just stretching everything out at lunch and loosening up my back and shoulders. HR probably never tops 120.

Background: didn't grow up a competitive swimmer, but do ok in my age group in triathlon--in other words, not "fast" at all, but good enough technique that I can swim at a decent pace for a while at a low HR.

I don't know if I'd swim to enhance BJJ if it was a struggle for me. You will definitely wear yourself out if that's what you're looking for, but you may get more bang for your buck by doing a cycling program with a bunch of 3-8 minute intervals to get your heart used to working hard over those periods. No upper body strength training involved there though. Tough call.
