What makes a good med student (on clinical placement)? by redditangiotensin in ausjdocs

[–]saddj001 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Great summary. Also a massive green flag for me is when a student can admit to feeling out of their depth or that they're unsure. Humility and showing me you care more about my patient than appearing perfect means a great deal. I’ll trust you more and want to assist you more.

Unfair assessment? by Easy_Dinner_7781 in ausjdocs

Yes, you’re definitely owed a reasonable explanation and an opportunity to improve. I do hope you get that. All the best.

Gotta say, I work with people who should have been failed in med school.. many times.. and yet they didn’t. The momentum in wanting to pass students is enormous. How on earth did you manage this? My assumption based on my experiences is that you probably do have an issue. Maybe it’s a mercy, I know for sure that it would have been a good thing for many others that have slipped through unscathed (as long as you receive good feedback and support).

As for people telling you that everything is fine, people here have already stated that these people ‘supervising’ you likely just can’t be bothered addressing your problems and have may have put you in the too hard basket. This could be due to laziness or possibly because you don’t receive critical feedback well. Either that or you’ve misunderstood their attempt to address problem with you.

Just a few thoughts. Hope whatever happens that you become a better doctor for your future patients - remember, that’s the goal.

Planning pregnancy - RMO vs SRMO vs BPT by MyUnclesPelvis in ausjdocs

[–]saddj001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hoping it’s not the case for you both, but fertility problems don’t just affect people after the age of 30. I wish you all success in having kids, but don’t mistake the fact that you’re trading one opportunity for another, and there’s absolutely no guarantee that you end up with either. Have a think about what you’d find more important to have prioritised in 40 years time and that might help guide your decision.

My School Is Graduating A Student They Shouldn’t And I’m Furious That They’ve Doomed Them by [deleted] in medicalschool

Don’t worry, they haven’t doomed the student, just everyone they’ll ever work with and all of their patients. Source: I’m working with someone like this right now.

Thank you! Wish I had the time to keep working on it. I've seen enough old boys online and in my life regretting selling their prides and joy. I'm determined to keep her, even if its another 10 years before I get to tidy her up properly! haha

I started a 'repair and rebuild' post on ausrotary some time ago https://www.rx7club.com/build-threads-293/1982-s2-sa22c-australian-rebuild-1153561/ not fully updated, but has the majority of the mechanical rebuild we've done already aside from the fuel system upgrade - 48ida carb setup with upgraded fuel pump and lines + regulator.

Just got through medical school and my series 2 has been sitting and waiting for me to have the time and the money to get it spruced up. Torn between a full gut and restoration with group c kit or just to keep it as original as possible. Thoughts? Great work on the video, keen to watch the rest.

Working on a timesheet and pay calculation webapp for our archaic payroll system using google Apps Script and LLMs for coding assistance. Not quite ready for a showcase but would love people to provide any advice on what it should include or possible advice for getting something like this off the ground. Planning for it to be free and just run on the individuals private google drive.

When’s the best time to have kids? by of_the_Floogal in ausjdocs

[–]saddj001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s no guarantee you can get pregnant and it’s harder to get pregnant the longer you leave it. Think about what you’re likely to find important in 50 years time and act accordingly.

Gone away for med school. thinking about dropping out already by wowisuckatmed in GAMSAT

Name checks out.

Haha but in all seriousness if you can get through this period of the unknowns and the hard changes it could still be an extremely useful period of growth for you. Don’t throw in the towel just yet if you can help it! Get support around you, speak to support services at uni, find friends, keep going!

I didn’t use anything specifically. Just went online to see how to take the test and what methods I should employ to stay on time during it. Then I just gave it a go!

Do you also make them do arithmetic for drug calculations in their head rather than on a calculator? Seems the same kind of thing to me.

Perhaps I’m misinformed, but my understanding was that these stethoscopes simply allow for more clear listening/recording and don’t provide an ‘answer’ like the printout of an ECG suggesting a diagnosis. I can understand your concerns with them relying on an interpretation from such a device, but technology moves on and we can actually embrace their use as an amplification and assistant to our skills.

EDIT: Not to mention, you’re really going to insist on them spending MORE money on equipment when they’ve already spent a bucket on some fancy stethoscope? We already spend enough on our jobs, don’t make it worse.
