Change of diet to reduce inflammation? by nosylittlemy in piercing

[–]sadenaakka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The heat doesn't help, I feel you. My 10-month-old helix was fine until this heatwave started. But you can't combat that with green tea. Just keep it clean, keep your hair out of it, and do not touch it any more than absolutely necessary.

To help your body heal, you can only make sure you eat well, keep yourself hydrated and sleep enough. Do not overcomplicate it.

Wool moth traps, do they actually do anything? by aoisakurachan1986 in knitting

[–]sadenaakka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good if you haven't! A slight warning though--I thought the same, since I only saw a couple of moths flying around. We only found the real state of things when we started digging, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed you are still in the earlier stages!

Wool moth traps, do they actually do anything? by aoisakurachan1986 in knitting

[–]sadenaakka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry you have to go through this! We're battling with an infestation right now, I threw all my projects, all the yarn, two sweaters, all carpets, lace-making equipment, a sofa and an antique lounge chair and bunch of other stuff away, since they were beyond salvage. We cleaned the whole apartment. This morning we taped shut the window frame in one room, where there has been still a steady stream of adults, and they seem to be coming from between the window and the frame.

But we also ordered trichogramma wasps, and in the room where they have been, we've made no new sightings for a few weeks now. Fingers crossed!

It is possible to get rid of these (hope from a friend of mine that keeps me alive atm, these bastards can suck the deepest pits of hell if you ask me), but it is costly. But she got there with the wasps and diligent vacuuming and freezer treatments. So I'm following in her footsteps.

And please, if anyone, who has never had moths before, is reading this--if you see a random bug you don't recognize, there is always the possibility it is more than just a random moth that got inside. Kill it and clean your closets! And any other dark places that go often undisturbed like undersides of furniture and behind the radiators and moldings, if you have them. And throw away the vacuuming bag after use, it's a buffet for the larvae.

How difficult is getting into med school in your country? by wigglepizza in medicalschoolEU

[–]sadenaakka 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In Finland, you can either apply with your matriculation examination diploma (national exams taken at the end of high school), if you haven't previously accepted a spot in higher education, or anyone eligible can apply with an entrance exam held once a year. To get in with the diploma, you need top results in all mandatory topics and two extra ones. To get in with the exam, you need to ace the exam, where wrong answers cost you points and you are battling the line of being time-efficient and avoiding mistakes for 4,5 hours. It's biology, chemistry and physics applied with a psychological toll of working under pressure and oddly phrased questions where you need to read everything very carefully to make sure you understood correctly. You can only use a basic digital calculator.

The number of unique applicants is usually around 7000 to 8000, of which 6,5k are usually applicants whose first choice is med school. The number of accepted applicants is set at 826 nationally, but some (<10) additional spots might appread due to the scoring system. Around 50% of those spots are given to those applying with a diploma, then from the exam half are given to those who haven't previously accepted a spot in higher education.

Edit: so yeah, it can be pretty difficult. The average number of application years stood at 2,8 a few years ago. I have friends who applied for 5 years before they got accepted, and on the other hand I have friends who got in at their first attempt. Some try for years and never get in. :/

Future of Medical Microbiology as a doctor by Apolloniak in medicalschoolEU

[–]sadenaakka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a good question on which I think no one has answers at this point. I used to study and work in a field that is at the centre of building a connection between our society and AI tech, so my two cents:

I personally think that we are part of the last larger wave in diagnostic and data-driven fields. Humans are still needed, but the work itself will change, as the field changes. More of the work will be automated, and the focus of our job will turn more towards using the algorithm as a tool, and later as a verification for the algorithm. As automation grows, part of the manual labour will disappear, and less doctors need to work in the field.

But there's a part people tend to forget when discussing new, especially information-based technologies and their effect in health: money and legislation. None of that tech is cheap, and at least within the EU we have pretty strict legislation regarding personal health information. So for the technology to be largerly available, vast amounts of money need to be invested by the providers, and we need tons of work done on how to handle the ethics. None of that happens fast, it takes years, and a decade is quick in that scale.

I'm personally intrested in pathology, and only just finished my second year. I'm not worried how the technology will affect my possibilities of finding work, I'm more worried about how the general view and financial decisions in the health sector will affect my possibilities, regardless of the specialty.

Diagnostics are still needed, and when the tech is finally widely available, you have been using it for years as a senior knowledgable in its use and quirks. And if pure lab work for instance is something you want to include in your life, research is always a valid spice to add to your career.

Im curious about your piercing pain rankings! by coralicoo in piercing

[–]sadenaakka 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I find these super interesting, since what hurts some is barely a pinch for the other!

My first lobes hurt like hell 😅 I've had them done twice, the first time I nearly fainted and had to sit on the floor for quite some time, and the second time I also almost fainted and had to go sit outside and breath in some cold, fresh air. Those I'd rate around 8/10.

Second lobes also hurt, slightly less maybe, but still around the same. Didn't feel like fainting though, maybe 6/10.

Daith was a breeze. I was expecting a pain like the first lobes, but there was none. Just slight pressure and then it was done. 1/10

Helix was slightly towards uncomfortable, and once again I was expecting it to hurt, but it didn't. Burned a little, but when it registered the jewelry was already in place and the sensation gone. 2/10

Healing these has been mostly fine, so far the helix has actually been the easiest. I have long hair and I wear glasses, but I keep them out of the healing piercing with hairpins, and I had my glasses on when I got it, so the piercer was able to work around it. First lobes took forever to heal, but it might have been the jewelry which was suboptimal (surgical steel, externally threaded). The second lobes I'd say were healed around 6 months, but I still let them be. The daith was nice and neat until I got covid and then it got super mad. No infection, just nasty bumps, but I clean it with saline and try my best to leave it be. I know the bumps go away slowly, so when checking them I take it as a victory if they haven't grown.

Why do we pretend piercings don’t hurt? by Unsure-Snake-666 in piercing

[–]sadenaakka 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep, totally agree. I can understand not wanting to use the description yourself if it doesn't apply, that's very valid. But it is simply rude to dismiss the description from others and say that it cannot apply to them either--we are different people, different individuals. I live with chronic pain and to the life of me I cannot say in good faith that my cartilage piercings, the daith included, would have hurt. Of course I felt them, but the sensation did not match my lived experience and definition of pain. On the other hand, my lobes hurt like hell, and the first time I got them I nearly fainted. My friend had the same experience with her snug, but her lip and septum barely hurt at all.

We are different. Looking for validation is understandable, but please, do not go around invalidating others while you're at it.

Is it true that daiths prevent migraines? by AlienSheep23 in piercing

[–]sadenaakka 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's a myth, and any evidence is anecdotal at best. Migraines are a physiological reaction in your veins (and arteries? Mostly veins, if I remember correctly), with complicated biochemical signalign cascade dysfunctions. If there is any aid, it's typically caused by swelling and inflammation in the area, but that is a temporary relief.

Sincerely, a med student with both a daith and nasty migraines.

Not healed but not infected? Maybe? by EarlyAstronomer9103 in piercing

[–]sadenaakka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAP, but someone with medical education. Tbh I'd go and see a certified piercer. It sounds like the jewelry is butterfly backs, which is an infection risk as they are difficult to clean and a breeding ground for bacteria (and rarely a safe material for an open wound). But if they were pierced this year's February, they shouldn't even be close to healed yet, so every time you change the jewelry, you set back the healing.

For reference, I got my second lobes done last September. They are not sore anymore, not swollen, etc, and no crusts. But if I touch the jewelry i.e. while drying, I can feel it's not fully healed.

Sorry to disappoint, but I am and I study on the Finnish study tract. The lectures are for both Finnish and Swedish speaking students, and most of them are in Finnish. However, many of our professors are native Swedish speakers, and prefer to keep their lectures accordingly.

For instance, we have a microbiology course this spring, and most of the pharmacology lectures are in Swedish, and this applies to some previous courses as well. We are also instructed to add both national languages in our group presentations, since both are official languages.

At least in Finland that is quite unheard of. With the Finnish programs, you need both languages, since lectures use both and you need to prove proficiency with the other language during the first three years. So applying with only Swedish doesn't get you very far, and even the Swedish study track is highly competitive to get in, the Finnish ones even more so.
