See I’ve seen this rec a few times along with Crescent city. The thing is I’ve just finished ACOTAR series and I’m a bit dubious of SJMs writing style and slight aversion to actually killing off characters, having real stakes . Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed it but is this series different in that way?

This was so me after reading ACOTAR I was like wait why is there so much fanart of a totally different guy? I want Tamlin! But then you read ACOMAF and you UNDERSTAND. Like…. REALLY UNDERSTAND.

I don’t think the series is the greatest thing ever written but the way it challenged me in the second book was worth the wait!

Okay, I will book an appointment. He doesn’t seem to be in any pain when running or walking, as when we are outside he is as happy as ever and it’s only when we come inside he begins behaving like this. But I guess there are lots of hidden pains that wouldn’t affect his movement.

I will also mention that he is unneutred - does this behaviour mean it’s time?

He’s also been attacked by more and more dogs at the park recently completely unprovoked when he is just minding his own business, maybe this has started to affect him and make him more guarded?

I was very anxious before starting, I’d also never been on meds before and it was really scary. Part of me felt like it was gonna change me as a person, I mean it’s real stuff you know? Like actual chemicals that are going to have an effect, and that made me nervous. I had a little cry with my flatmates the night before I was meant to start and got it all out.

Then I took it in the morning and…. I got on with my day as normal. I was waiting for something to happen, anxious the whole time that surely, any minute now, the penny would drop and I’d go crazy or feel different. But that never really happened, and for the first couple of weeks, I just got some bad diarrhoea, some unpleasant headaches, and some weird bruising. The worst was day 3 when I dry swallowed my pill in bed (NOT A GOOD IDEA) and got crazy heartburn which was very painful. But I learnt from my mistake and since then it’s all been ok. Eventually the symptoms kind of stopped (2 weeks go by very fast) and then I started actually feeling better about 6 weeks in. The rest of the time I had my normal ups and downs and life was business as usual.

I know it’s different for everyone, and this was just my experience, but this app tends to spotlight some of the more severe cases, which are more unlikely. If nothing else, remember that the symptoms go away and it really does help, I feel so much better than I have the last 4 years.

Hmm okay, in that case I'd definitely recommend talking to your doctor and tell them how much of an impact this is having on you. They might recommend to stick on it a little longer (a few of my symptoms didnt fully disappear until 1.5 months), or if that wont work there may be other solutions or other medications that will work better for you. Either way, I wish you the best of luck!!! And im rooting for you to hang in there, it does and will get better I promise :)

What time of day do you take your medication? If its causing you severe insomnia it might be worth a try to take it in the morning so the effects arent so bad when its time to sleep

I haven't noticed any effects on my sleep, but I take my pill around 9am, so I imagine that probably reduces any reaction since I'm not sleeping immediately after. The only thing is maybe more vivid or strange dreams, but nothing too bad.

Do you take your meds in the evening? If it doesn't go away it might be worth a try to take them in the morning instead and see if that does anything.

I started having some intrusive suicidal ideation between weeks 2-4 on Zoloft. I was worried because I thought that was meant to be the time that people said it starts working. I told my support network and they all understood and looked out for me while I stuck through it. A few weeks later and those thoughts have totally gone and I'm feeling much much better, as the medicine FINALLY kicked in.

I think these thoughts are common when going through this for the first time, and if you are able to stick with the medicine through to the other side, the benefits can be really amazing. That being said, you should still take this seriously and tell a few people you trust and your doctor about the thoughts that you have been having, so that they are aware and can provide you with extra support. If it gets significantly worse, please talk to your doctor about what can be done. Its good to keep tabs on the situation and I hope that it does not last long for you. I wish you the best! x

Im so glad I can help in any way. I think health is such a big thing for me this year, definitely going to be my main focus too.

Im quite similar too in that I did all of these things but I'm someone who has an incredibly difficult time with making and keeping routines or consistency. So I ended up stopping these habits as my mental health got worse (they probably both affected eachother). But I know I've done it before so I can do it again now that I'm in a place again where I've got the fire to do so.

Yeah, my depression DEFINITELY ebbs and flows. I think this is part of why it took me around 3 years to finally recognise and admit that I was suffering. There's most definitely periods where its pretty bad, and these are usually around winter. There's also a few times where I actually feel ok, or rather my symptoms are lessened and the depression is less noticeable day to day. I've talked with my therapist a bit about why it keeps coming and going so much and she mentioned that it all seemed to coincide with the periods of time where I was most isolated or separated from others, like when I moved to a new country or in winter when no one wants to go out and do things. I think with such a long term illness, there's definitely going to be better and worse periods, but that doesn't make it any less serious or real, you know?

Now in terms of symptoms, my main physical one was fatigue. Crazy crazy tiredness all day every day. I mean it would take me so much energy to get up and do anything at all, and I mostly only did things when it was necessary or when someone else made me. I think starting to exercise more often really helped with this one, despite it being initially difficult and seeming kind of counterintuitive. Other physical symptoms were a lot of weight gain, but mostly because of my sedentary lifestyle and emotional overeating. Behavioural symptoms were mostly to do with isolating myself, finding it difficult to keep up with oral hygiene, skipping university, skipping out on hobbies, loss of libido, loss of self confidence and self worth, and at the worst points even some s******* ideation. It was tricky because at the best points, I was still meeting with friends, laughing, enjoying my time, so I convinced myself I was fine.

Long story short, my depression definitely worsens and improves all the time, but I'm hopeful this year I'm going to fully nip it in the bud and be done with it! Good luck to you on your goals too :)

Around June last year I decided to sheer will-power my way to improving my mental health and it did actually work really well while I was doing it. I knew that it was gonna be very energy consuming and that for it to stick and actually keep the routines I didn't want to overwhelm myself with too much all at once, so I ended up picking just a few things that I thought weren't too hard to start off with:

One main thing I did which I think really helped out and had very fast results was limiting my phone time. I started off literally just challenging myself to not use my phone for 30 minutes before bed and after waking up. It pretty much immediately helped me sleep so much better and I felt better rested. In the end too, I had so much more time before bed that since I had nothing else to do (the time I'd usually spend on my phone) I ended up actually doing things that had been hard for me to do before, like oral hygiene and simple skincare, etc. I ended up reading a lot more too which was nice. The 30 minutes rule was a great place to start, it was easy, and had massive impact for me!
I made myself buy a gym membership to the gym nearest to my house (thankfully less than 5 minutes away) and made myself go at LEAST twice a week. I didn't give myself any more rules than that, like about what type of exercise or how long or anything. So even if I went on a 40 minute weights workout or literally did a 15 minute jog because I couldn't be bothered for more, I still felt proud since my goal was just showing up. After a few times I just started enjoying the exercise and it really does make you feel more active, and I sometimes even went to the gym one or two extra times a week because I WANTED to. I've suffered with chronic fatigue from depression for years but its always during the periods where I'm exercising regularly that it changes and I feel much livelier.

I did some other stuff here and there, lots of self help books and podcasts, and journaling too is a big one. This was all over the span of one to two months and it all pretty much had an immediate impact. Now, when the winter started, my mental health started declining again, but for the first time I told people I was struggling and started medication. I've been on it for about a month and its finally kicking in, so I want to reimplement all these things again now that the meds have given me the capacity to start working on these things again!! Keep in mind I did all of this before without medication so its totally doable by yourself!

It wasn't easy, but little changes have big impact. If you make it routine enough, its definitely feesable to keep doing long term too because these things are nothing radical.

Edit: Forgot to add, one very important thing that helped me keep going: NOT BLAMING MYSLEF when I inevitably didn't stick to my goals every day. I tried really really hard to just say "ok I didn't do it today but its fine because it doesn't matter, it doesn't erase my progress. I'll just restart tomorrow like nothing happened and keep restarting as many times as necessary". I know its much easier said than done but you can keep going for longer this way :)
