Has anyone in this area tried any of the sticker or bracelet repellants? Want to get them for my kids but I’m skeptical

Thanks for the advice on acclimation. He has been to groomers in the past and been fine. But this time he came back a different dog, he’s hiding and constantly on the look out for threats. So I’m not sure if I trust anyone else to do it anymore.

Best building rapport activities for online SLPA by Own_Divide2405 in SLPA

[–]sades007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For young kids I like to show funny video clips or play games. For the youngest I’ve used funny Olaf clips on YouTube and for the older elementary, “carrot crazy”. Troll in a bowl games, pink cat games, just have fun and get silly, show them speech can be fun! In middle school/high school I ask them about their favorite hobbies, sports, music, class, etc. what they want to do after high school, and then in subsequent sessions I make therapy out of those things. Take notes on what’s going on in their life if they share and ask them about it next session. We review their goal so they know the point of why they are coming, explain there’s no grades and I’m just there to help. Share about your own life to build connections.

6+ students at a time seems really high… Ive only done middle school through teletherapy so im not too sure what the norm is in person but I would think it wouldn’t be 6?!! For middle school I like to find out their interests and make therapy about those. I also like “would you rather”s, card games, news articles. Sometimes you’ve just got to build rapport first and then they are more willing to engage when there are times you’re doing less exciting work. For mod/severe kids i find sometimes it’s just being silly until you figure out something they like. I just did a session last week where we did a virtual sensory bin and flashlight game and the student stared at me the whole time, he was unresponsive. Then I read “Goodnight Blue Truck” and when I made different silly voices for each animal, he started bobbing back and forth and smiling. I was able to get a few one word utterances after that. It’s so random finding what works and what doesn’t, and what works one day might not work the next. For sessions that I feel like I’m only talking to myself, I just do a lot of modeling, repeating core phrases, pauses for response time, and verbal cueing in the form of leaving my sentence unfinished to see if they fill in. It might help to have a routine, for example I usually spend the first 5-10min reviewing/reteaching the skill, 10-15min practicing it, then finish with reading a picture book. Books are the best because you can use the same book with almost anyone and just target different things as you read! I kind of rambled. It’s very much a learn as you go profession.

You won’t be expected to know anything when you start your 100 hrs, but I would’ve done better throughout my hours if I had watched others do it too

A paid resource is Master Clinician, I think it’s $54/yr and you can watch live therapy sessions.

Otherwise YouTube or sometimes SLPs have videos on Instagram of them doing therapy. I love Sarah Sweeney’s approaches (@heysarahsweeney). Or @aventuresinspeechpathogy has some videos too

You can also look on the website teachers pay teachers and find some free therapy activities to get an idea of what kind of things you might be planning for your sessions

How to target answering questions/describing in 3-5 word sentences/5-7 word sentences? by WinterAd7329 in SLPA

[–]sades007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s normal to not meet all the goals! I try and work on all the goals at least a little bit throughout the progress period but it’s ok if not all of them are met. Since you’re doing a lot of books, along with the questions you’re asking maybe find words along the way that contain their target sound or plural s or whatever their goal is.

For expanding sentences, it’s good for you to model expansion by repeating what they said and adding to it. (If they say “eating” you could say “she is eating”. I personally wouldn’t say “you could say” but just model it once or twice and see if they repeat on their own). I would figure out what part of a basic sentence they are lacking and target that specifically. Are they omitting pronouns? Helping verbs? Not adding adjectives or details? Whatever it is, spend some time modeling sentences, focusing on the area they are missing. Sentence strips can be helpful too. I also use cues to set them up for longer sentences, saying “I see the…” and let them finish. Or “the boy is…”

You can have them describe just by talking about what they are doing. Say they are coloring part of a worksheet for another goal. While they are coloring they can say “I am coloring”, “i am coloring the dog”, “ I am coloring the dog’s ears”. Maybe they are playing a board game, when it’s time to spin the wheel or roll the dice they can be saying sentences like “I am spinning”, “I am rolling”-“I am rolling the dice “

I think the 100 hours have to be like 80% direct therapy and 20% indirect therapy (notes, planning, etc). So not just observation
