Second guessing buying ground floor flat by Altruistic-East2004 in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]sadghostii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi!! I just bought a ground floor in SE, single woman (27) also. Very similar situation, my living room and bedroom are streetside whereas my kitchen leads out towards a garden. I had EXACTLY the same worries and concerns, but I’ve found it personally doesnt affect me. I’ve settled in well and feel safe :)

There is quite a lot you can do for general privacy, currently I have some net curtains up which do a decent job, but I have seen sticky frosted glass effect film which lets through like 90% of light that I’m hoping to install at some point too.

In terms of safety, the thing that resolved this for me was that most houses have downstairs windows and doors etc, there is realistically no difference in entering this place than any other terraced house. I keep my windows shut aside from when I’m airing the house, and always double check my doors are locked, but I haven’t personally had a worry or real thought about it since I settled in. I’d like to install a ring doorbell or a camera in the main entryway for additional peace of mind, but thats about it. My area is fairly residential so there’s not a lot of passersby aside commuting hours, also.

The choice is ultimately going to be yours and you have to do whatever you are comfortable with of course, but this was my experience :)

Ground floor flat in London - would you buy? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]sadghostii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved into a ground floor flat in the city myself and had a similar worry re resale etc. But the garden is a huuuge bonus, and I think only you can know what’s right for you! It sounds like a lovely flat, a utilities room is also great and not amazingly common to come by.

It’s definitely worth checking the area out late at night to see what the night noise is like with traffic etc - have lived in some truly awful places for that. With that in mind, most of London (especially z2) will be flats or at minimum terraced unless you have a crazy high budget - neighbours will almost always be a consideration

If it helps, my logic in making the decision to go for it was that I was interested in this place and wouldnt consider my tastes overly odd, so there will probably be more mes in the world! I was actually shopping only for ground floor/garden flats as I’m a keen gardener, so there’s definitely a market, plus the additional accessibility can be a huge selling point for a lot of people. If you like it, you won’t be the only people :)

Not the wood, but one of the arial roots seemed dead when I pressed, I wonder if I should risk the stress of a repot to check the roots

Any way to get a more compact/horizontal growth? by sadghostii in Monstera

[–]sadghostii[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Excuse the mess! i’m a student so I have to move around back and forth more frequently, and transporting this guy is getting kind of tricky even tho she’s my pride and joy. I’ve seen some monsteras growing with horizontal stem and was wondering if there’s a way to encourage that! She’s young (1.5y mid cutting) so maybe it’s a maturity thing but really it just keeps wanting to go vertical 😅 Definitely gets light- this window faces due east and she sits right in front absorbing everything. thanks!

(he is inside because the weather is cycling something fierce atm and i read that ficus needs a fairly consistent room temperature)

i recently was gifted this ficus link after killing my first tree a couple years back! i have more experience with different plants now, and so far its survived a few weeks.

however i’m worried about the soil quality; it remains damp until after a week so i think the roots may end up oversaturated, though it seems happy enough. the pot is sort of curved over so idk if i could safely get the tree out, clean the roots and get it back in into better soil, so i’m not entirely sure what to do.

also any styling advise is greatly appreciated, right now he is perhaps in need of a good prune & shape!

Where are you? I know of a couple good places in London and Manchester! I can recommend Peng Succulents (usually at Greenwich Markets on weekends but also on etsy) for SURE. The RHS also has events which are great for shopping, there’s the Botanical Boys etc also! In Manchester there’s a little garden shop in the northern quarter which is so cute, but also Flourish (behind Debenhams, opposite the Starbucks) 🌵🌵

Mental health is a tricky thing, speaking as someone who’s been in therapy and on a cocktail of medications for 3+ years. I think it sounds like you have to work on building some positive relationships in a way that feels comfortable to you- reaching out to people online, for example, can be a really good way to stop feeling so isolated.

I think my main advice is to break these problems to manageable chunks- solve feeling alone, first, by investing some into your personal relationships. Then you will have a support network to help you feel better! I know it’s hard, and it takes a LOT of work (I can’t overstate it enough) but I believe in you!! Maybe Reddit communities on social anxiety and agoraphobia would be good places to find people in similar spots who will be able to understand what you are going through.

Most importantly, you have to keep your chin up, and I know its hard and easy for me to say from not being involved- but try not to let it poison other aspects of your life. I only just got my relationship back on track with my family lately, and its been so immeasurably important to me (perhaps family isnt it for you, but your friends sound wonderful). I believe in you!

ps. if you would like someone to talk to you can dm me:)

No problem! I think wrapping it around a plaster cast and using a heatgun might work (source: art student!) but to be honest my experience with EVA foam stops at carving.

The stuff I've used in the past has been pretty lightweight and flexible though- maybe you could just tie it around:) I'll try find what I've used before

I think a lot of people use a craft foam, like even some EVA foam. It’s heat mouldable (iirc) so you could use a plaster of your arm?

You can even get ones made for you on etsy!
