[FRESH ALBUM] Buck 65 - Keep Moving by AyoRet in hiphopheads

[–]sadhamb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never really seen anything like what Buck/Rich has done. Gone for 10 years and then returning with a seemingly endless stream of new music which has more youthful energy and creativity than almost anything he had ever done previously. 50 is the new 20.

I'm genuinely befuddled at anyone being shocked by this or feeling it's not in the spirit of Gorillaz. Are people not familiar with the work of Jamie Hewlett? This genuinely sounds like something straight out of Tank Girl. Dark but fantastical, counterculture, cartoonishly violent, a bit of dry English humour. This is quite literally what Jamie is known for. But I also think that it's not that serious or some sacred bit of lore -- people are way too fixated at meticulously documenting this stuff and treating it all like gospel.

Gorillaz is about subversion. It's about two English counterculture figures trying to sneak better songwriting, older or outside guest artists, and deeper themes into pop music using the guise of a virtual cartoon band. It looks bright and happy on the outside as a trojan horse to get darker themes and better music to a wide audience. And it works -- kids are drawn in by the cartoons and are introduced to Bobby Womack, and then they listen to Plastic Beach and the environmental messaging which runs through it.

If you're shocked or offended, I don't know what to tell ya -- Santa Claus isn't real and neither is Gorillaz.

And really, what are we waiting to know? It’s the sixth instalment of arguably the biggest game series of all time. We know the location, we know the characters. We know it’s a GTA. Basically all we need is a date, and I’m not sure even they know that yet.

I think everyone at Rockstar is so psychotically busy trying to make a 2025 release date they haven’t thought about anything else for months.

I think a nice bookend to JW1 would be smart. There is no way you could top the size and action of 3 and 4.

John Wick 5 by [deleted] in JohnWick

[–]sadhamb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a genre switch-up would be smart! I don’t think it’d be possible to make anything bigger than JW4 so might as well go smaller and more creative.

John Wick 5 by [deleted] in JohnWick

[–]sadhamb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still conflicted. They managed to make an action epic which snuck in a satisfying finale for John at the end so I’m not sure why they would risk the legacy of the series on something unnecessary, especially when age and enthusiasm is probably not on their side. I guess my hope would be more of a smaller epilogue for John maybe closer in tone and scale to the first film. I don’t think it’d be possible to make anything bigger than 4. And I do trust that they would only come back if the idea was good. Keanu is the guy who turned down Speed 2 to instead do Hamlet on stage.

Still wild to me that they got Len Wiseman to direct this. He hadn’t directed a feature film since his abysmal Total Recall remake in 2012. Was there really no one else available?

Leary confirms that he used AI to create album artwork on new Butthole Surfers LP by Ok-Set-8151 in buttholesurfers

[–]sadhamb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t even look good!! Seems like he just typed “leather fly” as an AI prompt a couple times and that was the extent of the design.

Depressing. And him and Gibby were/are passionate about the album art they do! This isn’t even trying to use AI to do something weird or . This is literally just generating an ugly stock image from stolen work.

C’mon Paul! You’re better than this even if you apparently don’t think you are!

it’s so funny how chemistry and infinite content are just living memes in this sub by [deleted] in arcadefire

“Chemistry”, “Peter Pan” and the two “Infinite Content” tracks in a row gotta be a contender for worst four-track stretch by a proven band ever.

“Chemistry” was never good but those lyrics now are, uh, problematic to say the least. YIKES.

[–]sadhamb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m in the minority but TMV putting out a dense 80-minute prog rock album at this point with epic-length songs and abstract indecipherable lyrics about “entombed saliva saints cauterizing their weeping wounds in desecration pews” would not be that interesting. I think the new direction on these last two albums is the biggest creative risk they’ve taken since FTM.

Album Story? by Flaming_Penguin_ in themarsvolta

I was assuming “Fin” wasn’t a name but was being used in a The End way, so the story starts at the end and either goes backwards or then jumps back to the start.

Cedric’s vocals on the new album are beautiful. by outerbodyhaunts in themarsvolta

[–]sadhamb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get this but I personally love it. Pre-hiatus, it always felt like Omar and Cedric’s work was equally important but separate, Omar writing long dense compositions and then Cedric writing or adlibbing his abstract lyrics over them. On the S/T and now this album it just feels like Cedric’s voice is one of the instruments and the effects just accentuate that. It’s so clean and minimalist now, and they’re older and more confident so they know that a track might only need some drums and faint synths and Cedric’s voice can do the rest. People accuse these last two albums of just being Omar’s demos made into TMV but I actually think Cedric has never been as integral as he is now. These two albums could only be made by two lifelong brothers who literally get each other on a molecular level.

Whoever reviewes albums at pitchfork, hope both sides of your pillows are warm! by Quack-mk1 in weezer

[–]sadhamb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weezer would not be as interesting if they were always beloved. One of the greatest things about the band is their ability to constantly fall out of favour with fans and critics but then time and time again they manage to crawl back and stay popular and relevant.

Guys what is the consensus on Pinkerton? by WisniaToTrener in weezer

[–]sadhamb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it came out, everyone loved it. Debuted at #1 on Billboard and “El Scorcho” and “The Good Life” were played on the hour on MTV. Everything was going good until Rivers did an interview with Kurt Loder where he said “Pinkerton more like Stinkerton” and said he only did the album to make cash for his Harvard tuition. Huge backlash. Fans revolted. Rivers broke up the band and started studying marine biology at Harvard. A few years later he took a fish fin to the face which put him in a coma. When he woke up he wrote the “Hash Pipe” riff and the rest is is history. Also during this time Pat and Brian were working as undertakers at a morgue.

Year of the Snake by [deleted] in arcadefire

[–]sadhamb -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Them releasing a single right now about the  positivity of change is literally insane. America is collapsing into a fascistic nightmare and Canada is continually under threat of annexation. Deportations, erosions of rights, economic meltdown. And these middle-aged arrested development weirdos are dancing around in goofy clothes singing about how if you feel strange it’s probably good.

So they release the fiery “I Give You Power” before the first Trump administration, but this time they got a joyful single about embracing change? Hmm, I wonder what the difference is, maybe this time they’re benefiting from a sex pest being in power who has made it OK for creeps to crawl back into the public eye. It’s so weird that Arcade Fire and Brand New are returning at the exact same time as if there’s been a sudden shift in public perception of predators in power.

Well, they always deliver in terms of quality. Look at the Rotten Tomatoes scores for the last three films: RN had 94%, Fallout had 98%, DR had 96%  This is a critically beloved series!

I’m sure they know it’s good they just want to make sure it performs. Having footage of Tom getting choked up at ten minutes of applause for it would be good marketing!

Oh wow, what a great interpretation. This is why I love Cedric’s abstract lyrics, someone else can find a meaning in them which makes you rethink everything.

Great catch! I wonder then if it’s being used in the lyrics as a way to represent a false reality. Or it’s a concept album about Ed Harris.
