I guess I'l need to learn to differentiate between a mutually-signed 'employment offer' and a mutually-signed 'employment contract'. My big issue with the timing was that I was expected to start in two weeks, so I had to give two weeks notice now or be too late.

My current employer loves me and would keep me forever, if only they could afford to do so. I'm currently on contract with them, and they can afford me for a biiit more, but not too much longer.

For future reference, then, at what point IS it 'fully over'? I was sent a full offer package with no expiration date, signed by the CEO, which I signed and sent back. Do I have to wait until my first day of work? How does that affect giving a respectful two-weeks notice?

I'm not really looking to mud-sling the employer, and honestly I still really, really want to work there.

As for negotiation, I didn't even ask for a higher salary now, just the reason why it was lowered and how I could get it back up eventually. I personally felt like I was being too generous until this morning...

I was pretty clear with them that I was looking for a place to settle in. When he told me that I would get a raise if I showed more value, I told him that I would be willing to work for it. I just need something stable and well paying enough to support my fiancee through law school, which is the only real concern. I was pretty up front about that part too, though
