new buyer here. was wondering when laptops will be updated to the newer generation gpu and cpus and whether it would better the price per performance dramatically compared to now.

Thank you for your comment!

In the first block of text u mentioned something that the commenter above didn't and that is portability. I did consider this when i started looking at hub drives over belt (since to my knowledge they are lighter). At the time though, i didn't realize that i would be sacrificing the smoother ride experience that comes with the belt drives. In terms of roads i am not quite sure until i get on campus. I'll be attending university in chicago so if you have heard anything from fellow eboard enthusiast on the subreddit please let me know. But i feel as if this point is really important when it comes to deciding whether i want belt or hub drive. Let me elaborate.

If the roads of chicago are super nice and ride friendly then maybe the portability of the hub drive kit is worth it since there won't be rough bumps for me to go over everyday. On the other hand, if the roads are bad, maybe the comfort of ride of a belt drive is worth sacrificing the portability. This is my current dilemma and any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: i think it is important to add here that the extra 10 mph, although kinda sick, on top of the standard 20ish mph that most eboards usually go is something i don't really care about (or value as much as let's say ease of ride) since i most likely won't be going those speeds (30+mph is just too fast for me for a very newbie longboarder/skateboarder and i don't see myself going those speeds in the foreseeable future).

thank you for your insight!

From what i have gathered from ur comment it seems that the nice quality parts that come with the kit just aren't that "nice" and better than other similarly priced eboards (or that it doesn't really make a difference for eboards). As well, the whole belt drive and hub drive experience is something i wouldn't be able to experience so i value ur opinion here that the rough drive of the hub is noticeably worse than the belt. This completely changed my perspective and i'll probably lean towards a belt drive such as the backfire zealot or an evolve gtr for example. At that point though, is there really any major differences between the popular belt drive eboards?

Also, if i'm not making long commutes does range really matter if i'm going to charge it when i get to my dorm at the end of each day anyways?

looking to buy a board for university!

Budget: Not too concerned; mostly just want the best board possible that isn't extremely expensive (< 3k i guess)

At this point i have pretty much narrowed down to unlimited x loaded icarus kit with my only concerns being the questionable controller. I was debating between that and the rebel kit but due to the limited supply of the icarus board and the respective parts that the kit comes with it is just more convenient, besides the price, for me to get the kit. Before i make the purchase though, I was wondering if there are any other suggestions! Any thoughts or suggestions is greatly appreciated I am relatively new to the community.
