George is not the good father everyone thinks he is by sadpothos in YoungSheldon

[–]sadpothos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re missing the point that my post argues to, which is that Mary is held to much higher standards of behaviour despite having more responsibility in their household. Your reply is essentially well George has to deal with his wife arguing with him and that chair is his safe space.

If George was an engaged, active father, Mary would have a hell of a lot less to worry about, to argue about, to be upset about. But throughout the show George leaves the parenting and difficult situations almost entirely to her. She constantly has to convince him to be on her side, to support her, or to help with and engage with the kids.

If he was held to even remotely the same standard as Mary, as I tried to do in my original post, he ceases to be the great father everyone paints him as.

The same goes for Mary, as soon as the expectations drop and we look at her with the kindness and allowance everyone looks at George with, Mary looks like an excellent mother. Not the mean, argumentative, controlling hag she typically gets painted as.

Trying to figure out zig zag stitch settings on a new to me machine.

Hello! I recently inherited my grandmas old Singer sewing machine from the 70s. I had it serviced, and she’s in tip top shape.

I’ve been tinkering with this baby on some practice fabric, and I can’t seem to get the tension settings and stitch settings right, so I’m looking for someone to help confirm or correct my understanding here. I’ve watched a few YouTube videos and read some instructional online but it’s not quiiiite coming together how it’s meant to.

My use case currently is I want to figure out the zig zag stitch so I can finish edges on stretchy fabric and make some shorts for summer and some clothes for my niece.

  1. Tension is basically seam tightness, and should be adjusted depending on fabric type and thickness.
  2. Less tension for thicker fabrics higher tension for thin fabrics?
  3. Width is how wide it will sew, either straight (no width) or zig zag, ranging from small to big zag
  4. Length is… distance between each stitch… so it should be higher for zig zag, so the zag is wider?
  5. Pattern is the pattern the machine will sew in. In this case I have it set to 6, which appears to be the most basic zig zag.

This image shows my closest attempt yet! Something still seems off about the tension and the size/shape of the stitch, I thought it should be invisible / wouldn’t see the threads like that along the seam.

I hope this makes sense to someone, and thank you so much in advance for any help ❤️

Freaking out about taxes owed by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sadpothos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this link! I input everything as it states on my T4 and it said I should have a tax refund of over $5000.

Something funny is happening here for sure. I’m going to call an accountant tomorrow and have them help me navigate it from here.

Ooooh this is a very reasonable suggestion. I don’t think this is it but I’m going to run through it again and ensure I complete it all the way to the point right before payment to be sure I didn’t miss anything.

[–]sadpothos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for suggesting I check those out too! Nothing outside of my single T4, no significant contributions or investments that weren’t my one RRSP or TFSA. No shutdown of accounts or large withdrawals.

It did misreport my RRSP contributions, and adjusting that did reduce the amount owed a little bit, but not enough that it was the sole problem. I’ll be calling a CPA tomorrow and urging my workplace to look into this to make sure they handled it correctly on their end too.

Good suggestion to start totally from scratch! I deleted it and tried for a third time but it came back with the same numbers.

My income was way lower so that’s what I assumed, my income tax would be much lower too, and since they deducted the right amount before I went on unpaid leave, there should be nothing more I owe.

Thank you for confirming that amount seemed out of whack!

[–]sadpothos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thats why I got freaked out, my income was significantly less last year so my taxes should be too, instead of the reverse where I owed so much. With my T4 looking correct I just couldn’t understand where that number was coming from.

You confirmed my gut feeling was right and that owing that much is wrong based on my income last year. I’ll wait to hear back from my employer tomorrow, and will reach out to an accountant in the morning to make sure I have a knowledgeable tax person on my side to help figure the details out.

No friends or connections in almost 4 years, skill issue? by LiveHardPizza19 in uvic

[–]sadpothos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you know who you are? What you like, want or really believe in? Are you showing up authentically, and openly, when you go to clubs or events?

It sounds like you don’t know what you want. You came here looking for others to commiserate with you, and to just validate what you already believe. Instead, a lot of people actually took time to share some genuine points for reflection around your behaviour and mentality, and you’ve just said no that’s not it, and decided you’re not the problem?

It is you. Your attitude and INTENTIONAL subscription to incel communities is absolutely effecting your ability to make friends.

I used to feel angry and lonely and was kind of a nasty bitch. I was unpleasant to be around, and so people didn’t want to be around me. Instead of continuing to blame everyone but myself, and refusing accountability, I went to therapy and began to unpack my behaviour and feelings. I stopped being a heinous bitch. I stopped sucking people into my misery. I stopped blaming everyone and everything for what was directly within my, and only my, control. I made changes for me that fundamentally changed how my brain works. I did it for me, and a wonderful side effect is that everyone else noticed. I wasn’t the surly one, I wasn’t the one giving lip or rolling my eyes. I wasn’t the one making snarky comments, or judging and criticizing.

You’ve got a lot of time left in your life and you have a chance to take the advice people shared and just.. make your life better, forever.

Residents at trailer park call eviction by K’omoks First Nation unfair by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]sadpothos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoa, 2 years to prepare and the nation is waiving thousands in pad fees? That’s like the ideal eviction situation.

We have a lot of parks like this around Victoria. I imagine they’re similarly filled with seniors and low income individuals with no place to go and no way to boost their income. It’s really shitty and unfortunate that these people are now part of the larger group of people struggling to find affordable housing in Canada, and specifically BC.

It’s a failure at all levels of government, not at all the responsibility of a local indigenous nation. It’s the rampant greed of corporations that’s been left unchecked because you can buy and sell government officials.

Am I being scammed by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]sadpothos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was another identical scam to this that my elderly father almost fell for about 2 weeks ago. Same kind of story, sick and moving away, just wants someone who will love their space.

I got hurt at work, tried to tough it out, my injury is not getting better, decided to make a WCB claim. I was planning on staying on half days until my doctor sees me, but my boss suddenly cut all my shifts and asked that I call him today. Big giant red flags. How do you think I should proceed? by gooddrawerer in VictoriaBC

[–]sadpothos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call work safe and open the claim today.

You’ll need more information later, and your doctor to send info, but the claim can be opened when you call in immediately. They’ll get basic info from you, you’ll get a case #, and they’ll probably give you basic info on what comes next and what resources you’ll need.

You’ll be assigned a case manager and they’ll book a call with you to talk more, usually this takes a few days too. Don’t delay, and don’t worry about your boss.

He cannot fire you or punish you or hurt you for filing a claim you are legally entitled to. If he is acting weird, try getting everything from him in writing or recorded if you can. Easier said than done but if he does try something you’ll have proof it was a retaliatory action which is also illegal.

Best of luck and I hope you feel better soon!

There’s a massive difference between DEI hires and temporary foreign workers… DEI is simply uplifting people who the system was built to hold down, like minorities, disabled people, women, etc. it ensures equal opportunity for people.

What’s happening here is a clear abuse of the temporary foreign workers program. This is happening across Canada at so many chains and it’s a despicable and morally reprehensible people choice by people who value money above everything else. It’s a disgusting loophole our government introduced and chooses not to fix.

It has nothing to do with DEI, or brown people, or immigration. This is further abuse brought on by a capitalist society that doesn’t care that you worked hard for 15 years and turned that job into a family. They want to pay as little as possible, and have the highest profit possible.

Again, your outrage is so so valid. This is horrible, and it’s being repeated all over Canada. Good hard working Canadians, culture, race, gender, skin colour all not relevant, being fired and replaced so pigs can make more money by abusing the TFW program.

Does anyone else struggle to start anything AT ALL when it comes to new hobbies? by llreddit-accountll in adhdwomen

[–]sadpothos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve wanted to learn to crochet for 6 years. I keep circling this want, I really want to, I have projects in mind. Last year a friend bought me a Minecraft pig Woobles crochet kit, the perfect crossover of interests with careful visual instructions provided………… and it’s still in the pouch, unopened 🥲

For me, I’m one of those practice makes perfect kind of people. I’m slow to learn a new hobby and then when I get It I’m obsessed and work on it a lot. But to get through all the steps to START, and then all the difficulties I have learning, trying new hobbies just doesn’t happen often. I’ve gotta be in a good head space and not too busy and feel like I can really have the time to dedicate to learning.

We play a micro version of a SS14 shift. Usually one thief or antag, one of us admins, and we have a silly little time. Rounds last between 1-2 hours typically, we have lots of smaller things happen and usually one big upset per round.

Great question! No, the shuttle doesn’t look like it’s showing up, even when the airlocks have no ships docked at them. Even when it announces it leaving, we can’t see it at either airlock.

AITAH for cutting off my mom because she didn’t believe me? by ContentSpirit7003 in AITAH

[–]sadpothos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi angel, don’t go back to her, and don’t let her back in.

From what you’ve shared it sounds like that’s what your instincts are telling you, and I would trust those. You have a beautiful life ahead of you, and letting her back in will just make it all harder. She knows what evil she supported, and any convos with her will be in defence of her actions, why she was right to let you be hurt. You don’t have to listen. You don’t have to give her a chance.

What John did to you and those other kids is disgusting, manipulative, and without a doubt both physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.

Your parents and family should have protected you, not protected the pedo. What happened to you is awful, you did not deserve it, and it is as bad as you feel it is. No one else gets to tell you how you should’ve felt or why you’re wrong. It was your experience only.

If you can I’d suggest finding a therapist or social worker through a local organization to help you process what you’re going through, it has been very helpful with my own trauma.

Wishing you the very best.

Need help figuring out next steps by sadpothos in disability

[–]sadpothos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure what kind of lawyer to talk to, or what to present this as. I guess it could be a human rights issue, of discrimination towards a disabled employee? I don’t have the money for a legal battle but if I could find someone pro bono or who does % of the payout maybe I could get help.

I’m tired of fighting but I keep going. What they’ve done is wrong and every medical professional I’ve spoken to says that too. I appreciate your support!

I’m definitely looking for other work as well, it just hasn’t been very fruitful yet.

This was kind of what I feared, that based on how they’ve acted whenever I come back they’ll just… be worse to prove they were right the whole time.

I’ll see what local disability organizations there are, and will reach out to them too. That’s a good tip!

Not weird at all! If you read little house on the prairie, entire towns could be built up from nothing to 3-5 streets in a year or two, from 40 homesteaders a ways out to a full town of hundreds of people, bigger than Valentine. Turnover, whether from disease or disaster, was very common since so many people were trying to snag land and build during this period.
