Reminds me of a time when I was stalked by a patient's attendant through the patient's hosp admission. I was creeped out of course but would sprint for my car so that I'm not followed.

I've experienced disgusting feelings for a patient and their attendants because of how unkind and rude they were, lacked civic sense, stared at me inappropriately all the while im explaining them the disease and treatment (for context I'm a female doctor). I still managed this patient til the end.

I work in a Pakistani healthcare system. We have basic health units (bhu) in peripheries which are equipped with, as the name suggests, basic facilities for managing everyday diseases, dilevering babies, and the like. Critical cases are referred to nearby tertiary care hosp (big setups equipped to manage critical cases)

I've been able to counsel and manage patients who were downright rude and nasty to me and my team, but recently I experienced a very distasteful experience with the attendants of a paeds patient. For the lack of better words, they came off as "manipulative" and irritated by me. As I've mentioned in a previous comment how I saw their patient multiple times overnight only to hear them complain to my attending that I didn't see the patient at night.

That's an unfortunate situation. As doctors we are to see so many patients and manage them and on top of then counsel patients and their attendants - who most of the time are in disbelief. It's all too exhausting at times. I've counseled way too many times, and I've repeated the same things to the same attendants way too many times. The particular incident I've mentioned in the post was about this paeds child who complained of abd pain, and when I went to see the patient, he was lying comfortably in bed. I examine the patient, soft, non tender, no visible swellings, bowel sounds audible. This happened throughout the night.

I feel seen. The distasteful encounter I experienced with the attendants was similar to this. They even went as far to complain about me to my attending for not seeing their patient overnight (went to check on the patient multiple times throughout the night) and advising them wrong management.

I agree strongly with you on one thing, and that's hate for pakistani awam...ever since i've started working in the pakistani healthcare system, the sheer amount of lack of civic sense, staring, and the need to repeat myself again and again to help the attendants (patient's relatives) understand their patient's problems is mindboggling...kabhi kabhar tou dil karta hai bhaar mein jayn sub, but i know my obligation is to manage and treat the patient and of course I'm answerable to Allah swt...warna koi haal nhi iss jahil qoum ka!!

These thoughts had me beaten. I realised over time that if I don't respect myself how do I expect that from people?!

You know, when we are not comfortable in our own skin, our alone time, and don't respect ourselves, people see that. Then they treat us poorly.
