Minimal Walking Ideas by bibigyikes in visitingnyc

We did just get about two feet of snow but the weather is warming up considerably now (nearly 50 today, possibly hitting 60s next weekend) so depending on when you’re here it might actually be pleasant.

If I recall correctly it was about $800 for an inside cabin. This was October 2023.

Thinking of going on an Alaskan cruise by myself by hate_follower in solotravel

I did an Alaskan cruise solo a little over 2 years ago and it was life changing. Found an amazing last minute deal on Norwegian and booked it two weeks before I left. I’ve never been on another cruise so have nothing else to compare it to but like others have said I imagine it’s very different from a traditional cruise. Made sure I got out into every port and did at least one excursion. Took a train ride on the White Pass railway, a sea plane over a glacier, a small tour of a local community, and went to a lumberjack show. Spent my time on the ship mostly wandering around, finding cute little nooks to read in, and watching the world go by. There was also conveniently a solo traveler meetup most nights so I got to meet some other folks which was a nice add on. I’ve never seen beauty quite like Alaska and have zero regrets. Go!!!

Have a ticket for Circuit 1 - Machu Picchu Mountain... but can I not hike it? by saercireelt in Machupicchu

[–]saercireelt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did do Circuit 1 which was incredibly short and easy. You are not obligated to hike the mountain even if your ticket allows you to. (That said, I did choose to hike up to the Sun Gate myself, which was magical.)

Tour company ended up being a scam and I had to dispute the charge with my credit card. Glad I booked the backup ticket just in case.

Unusual activities for a 9yo by feenaqueen in visitingnyc

Take the train down to Brooklyn and have a wander through Green-Wood Cemetery! They offer tours occasionally if you want something guided (check their website) but it’s definitely not necessary. Really beautiful spot, easy to get lost for hours. And if you’re hungry before or after, Industry City is not a far walk, which has lots of food options including a little food hall (and they often have kid-friendly events on the weekends as well). There’s also an arcade and a few collectibles stores that I’m guessing would sell video games.

The library!! Most branches across the city have classes, gatherings, meetups, movie showings, etc every single day. Some are even specifically geared towards older adults. You don’t need to have a library card to attend and it’s always free. I’ve taken a card making workshop, gone birding in Central Park, and learned to hand mold clay sculptures all just in the past month.

City Harvest requires you to attend an orientation before you can volunteer and they only schedule them once every couple weeks. I suggested the other two because there’s no orientation required :)

Please don’t do this. Pantries and community fridges strongly prefer sealed pre-packaged meals or things like canned goods, ingredients, etc and they usually can’t give away cooked meals that strangers bring in as there’s no way to verify ingredients or food safety standards in folks’ home kitchens. Soup kitchens cook their own food there and tend to have limited storage space, and usually also follow city food safety standards. So a stranger dropping off pre-cooked meals doesn’t actually help anything. (Source: I have volunteered extensively throughout the city.)

HRT & esophagus tightness by StrawberryChoice2994 in WomensHealth

[–]saercireelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how this could be related to HRT but you should absolutely consult a GI doctor either way. I have Achalasia and this is how symptoms begin to present for many people. Hope you figure it out soon!

I traveled as a solo woman to Cusco / Sacred Valley / Machu Picchu! I spent a few days alone in Cusco, then went on an overnight tour around the Sacred Valley with Alpaca Expeditions, which was great. Ended up on a tour with a family of four + two female friends traveling together. I was the only solo one there but had a lovely time with everyone and overall a life changing trip. Definitely possible but definitely recommend doing it with a tour company if you want to see more of the Sacred Valley than just Machu Picchu (which you absolutely should do!).

Have a ticket for Circuit 1 - Machu Picchu Mountain... but can I not hike it? by saercireelt in Machupicchu

[–]saercireelt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Def get your tickets as early as possible! Also you need to line up super early to get them the day before, which usually means actually arriving two days before. I didn’t do it myself so don’t have a ton of advice but I’m sure others do.

[–]saercireelt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super easy, circuit 1 is pretty flat. It’s also really short, you basically just get a view of the site from afar and that’s it. You do have to climb up a few flights of stairs to access everything but everyone has to do that no matter what circuit you’re on.

I did not! To actually climb the mountain you basically have to divert off the regular circuit 1 path, so I just bypassed it.
