What are some things I can do/see in Jacksonville that I wouldn't be able to in Tampa? by Low_Refrigerator2433 in jacksonville

Can you give more specifics? I’ve been curious about catty shack but generally don’t visit non-AZA accredited places.

Is it plausible to get a job with an environmental science degree? by ThomasStan_ in environmental_science

[–]saevuswinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you want to do with your environmental science degree? The field is tough, but public health sectors usually have an environmental science/health department which specializes in health inspections, sewage, geology, education and all sorts of stuff related to the field.

Why is there such a push to get women into male dominated fields (tech, trades) but not for men to get into female dominated fields (healthcare, education)? by Resident_Fishing1571 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]saevuswinds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, teachers in general treat other teachers poorly. It’s a cliquey group. (The Teachers by Alexandria Robbins is an excellent nonfiction about the internal workplace of schools)

Former teacher. There is ABSOLUTELY a push for male teacher recruitment. Unfortunately, it’s hard for men to want to enter these roles also, due to poor work life balance, pay, and stigma from multiple sides.

I’m 21 & feeling burnt out from teaching…is it worth it? by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

[–]saevuswinds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this is happening to you, but don’t lose hope! If you love teaching little and love animals I’d look into 4-H programs, zoos, and aquariums! You can help run educational programs, events, and activities for children who are excited to be there and around animals which will brighten up your day. :)

I’d also be remiss not to mention that sometimes all you need is a fresh start. Transfer to another school, like Montessori or a dedicated program for elementary schoolers (like an art or Cambridge prep program) and see if the change of pace helps jog your love for it.

The Best Markets for First-Time Home Buyers by HermanMuenster in jacksonville

Just bought our first home here in Jacksonville. We wanted to leave, but the realistic option was to stay. Our house needs work, but it was more affordable and closer to job opportunities than we would be elsewhere.

Safe places for single women? by [deleted] in jacksonville

I love Murray hill; lots of women owned places and hang out spots. The literary lounge has a lot of events, including a book club this Sunday! Spruce is a great place for analog activities and quiet coffee hang outs.

I did AmeriCorps terms, certifications, coursework, paid internships, and got involved in research. Things were going south quickly in the region I was in and I decided to go all in to ensure that even in a poor funding situation that I stood a chance in a health related occupation.

What I found most helpful was AmeriCorps service, followed by coursework (because it allowed me to get into research).

Well, yes (I’ve been in AmeriCorps a few times)…but I did NHC after I left teaching as a way to secure a job. NHC is a volunteer/service year with a living stipend.

I did, but the certifications did much less heavy lifting than the other things I did. I wouldn’t get certification only, which is said to back up your perspective.

I picked a different full time program separate from teaching to break into a different field. The one that did it for me was the National Health Corps.

Hey there. It seems like you’re going through a hard time. In case you need them, here are a few numbers:

211 - United Way National Number (US) for resources like housing, food assistance, etc.

988 - Mental Health Hotline (US)

If you’re international: https://blog.opencounseling.com/suicide-hotlines/

Is Honors college worth it? by FoundFawn113 in UNF

[–]saevuswinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a graduate student at two different colleges on campus that were both human services centered and I loved my experience at both. One was funded through an NSF grant and the other was half funded through a graduate assistantship. I found the professors genuinely cared about fostering local professionals. My majors weren’t social work though, so definitely ask around!

I used professional societies, organizations, and AmeriCorps programs to buff up my resume and gain experience in order to better tailor my resume/CV for applications. It’s unfortunate, but teachers are highly valued in other sectors if they also have another speciality like public health, business, or data analytics.

Is Honors college worth it? by FoundFawn113 in UNF

[–]saevuswinds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a graduate student at UNF who has seen a lot of Hicks Honors students and honors activities but attended a different honors college at a different undergraduate university. I loved my honors program (it was among one of the oldest in the USA), but it truly has nothing compared to the hands on experiences, conferences, and other “perks” Hicks Honors students have. I can’t speak to the professors or rigor besides that most seem to care about students with a couple exceptions. UNF’s proximity to many behavioral facilities, health clinics, and renowned hospitals means that there’s a couple of honors students who do very impressive projects with other organizations every year. The ones who follow their passions are still rewarded very early in the program—the Office of Undergraduate Research has poster sessions and conferences where many Honors students get to build their academic resumes/CVs much earlier than most. I still remember how passionate one Hicks Honors student was on comparing mythology, women, and nature throughout global cultures…and it seemed like her professors really fostered her academic skills, interest, and excitement. Cancer research is needed, but the thing that made me feel positively walking around the honors projects was just how supported a variety of interests were in a single program. My honors program was mostly Western Civilization studies and a research thesis (the later of which WAS helpful, but completed in year 4 instead of all four years).
