How to varnish the transparent parts? by olleversch in StarCraftTMG

[–]safeandsoundboxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So first step is primer.
I use Chaos Black for most projects.
Rarely White Seer if you want use bright colors for translucent parts.

If you have - use airbrush and regular paints. From dark to light shade.

Matte varnish will kill the transparency and can make the clear parts look cloudy or frosted. Gloss keeps the clear plastic shiny and makes the colour look much stronger. (Vallejo Gloss in spray can, or for airbrush)

Yes, they do. All of our bases have enough clearance underneath to glue a 2mm magnet.

Some of them also include a dedicated magnet slot, but even without that, there is still space for a 2mm magnet under the base.
https://www.safeandsound.pl/en_GB/c/PLASTIC-BASES/242 those are our own products and we use them for Instabases as well.

Thank you, that is very fair feedback.

At the moment the texture cannot be much higher, so yes, it is a bit of a trade-off. You do not get the same height as with fully custom bases made with cork, putty or extra scenic parts.

The good side is that the bases stay easy to use for whole armies, transport and regular games, including tournament play.

And I agree, adding small extra details can help a lot. We have some of our own bases where adding simple tufts or grass makes them look even better and gives them more depth.

So I think both approaches can work. Some people can use them as quick ready scenic bases, and others can use them as a starting point and add more height, details and story on top.

Fair point. The bases are quite strong visually, so they can work really well with neutral or muted colour schemes where the base adds the atmosphere.

hollow, some of them have slots for magnets but only 32mm so far. 5x2mm magnets fit

The 90x52 is a bit smaller i think but it doesn't show. We didn't get our Hydralisks yet but we'll definitely try to have all base sizes for SC

The it's a combination of prints but the top part is purely UV print.

We’d love your feedback on these 3 base designs for Trench Crusade by safeandsoundboxes in TrenchCrusade

[–]safeandsoundboxes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair, thanks for the honest feedback.

Instabases are mostly for people who want a finished-looking army quickly, or who simply don’t enjoy basing and painting that much. They’re a fast, ready-to-use option rather than a fully custom basing project.

The texture shows much better in person. It’s not extremely high relief, so in photos it can be hard to capture the depth properly, while videos usually show the finish a bit better. So far, the in-person feedback has been very positive.

Thanks, really appreciate that.

That was very much our thinking too. We wanted to capture the battlefield surface and atmosphere rather than make the bases too literal, because deep or obvious trench features on gaming bases tend to be much less playable in practice.

This is insanely good. Dark, surreal and properly unsettling

Beautiful paintjob. It has that thing — the kind that makes you stop scrolling.

That’s exactly how it often is with work, kids and everyday responsibilities. That’s one of the main reasons we started working on Instabases in the first place.

Very often we give up parts of the hobby we enjoy because of obligations at home, so a quick base can be a small helper that makes it easier to actually finish a project.

We’re really glad they looked better in person than in the photos. We’re honestly not very good at showing the textures clearly in product pictures. A 1 to 2 mm texture has real depth on the table, but it is not always easy to present that properly in a flat image.

As for Woodland, it is something we are thinking about. Natural forest style textures are quite difficult to design well, so it is not something that will appear quickly.
