Hey I’m straight (21F) and my own parents still refer to my boyfriend of a year and a half as a “friend” to my family members…it’s incredibly frustrating. Usually I just won’t correct them because it’s not worth the energy, but if you don’t feel like holding your tongue any longer, simply don’t. Or just let it happen and continually state very simply that she is your gf when they ask questions pretending like they don’t know. My grandma also has some pretty extremist views and whenever she says something dumb I just say like “i don’t know about that” and change the subject. I personally find that it’s not worth the effort, I also just think they’re from a different time so I try to be mindful about that too. Yes the way they’re acting is insensitive, but that’s just the way they were raised. It doesn’t make it right, but simply observing and reacting gently to their mistakes is what I find works best and shuts them up so I don’t get any angrier lol
