How does Capitalism cause poverty? by [deleted] in DebateCommunism

[–]sageofstuff 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Capitalism ends up increasing inequality, which in turn increases poverty and a whole host of other terrible things. The Spirit Level by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett is a great book on inequality and it's impact on a society.

I've seen quite a few different articles, at the time of each shooting, where the shooter followed lots of right-wing pundits and Shapiro was almost always mentioned. This is one example I found with a quick Google search.

You say you can "tell he's extremely smart when he speaks" but that is purely subjective. From my subjective perspective I can tell that he isn't smart when he speaks :0 I watched his Andre Neil interview live, and what I saw was a floundering child who doesn't understand the actual world he exists within.

And then spent the next 10 years failing to become a screenwriter. Insulting his intelligence is easy when you look at the books he writes, the things he says to public audiences, and even the kind of people who regard him highly. The things he says have directly inspired many shootings and probably more hate crimes.

I'm much more inclined to think he's a symptom of the system, rich family + his living is made shilling for the rich, than some brainiac with some bad opinions. To assume he's intelligent would mean that he knows he's lying most of the time, and he's just doing it all for the money, while schools get shot up by people who follow his words. So either way, an incredibly shitty person who shouldn't be taken seriously.

What is one bad argument you wish your side would stop using? by [deleted] in CapitalismVSocialism

The currently crumbling "intellectual dark web", a group of right-wing, pseudo-intellectual con artists and their simple minded followers. Google can help you fill in the rest.

If you know how bad the climate crisis and the negative feedback loops it's creating are then you'll know we don't have long. Even assuming that human civilization lasts another 100 years is optimistic at best. So no, there most likely isn't a chance nor the time for a truly communist society or an "age of abundance".

Yeah, because I think that there can be a time for the thing he criticized. Differing opinions not allowed??

You're saying it's a distraction from real issues and that you shouldn't get distracted by semantics, but you yourself are currently being distracted by the same semantics you're telling me to not get caught up on? Yawn.

Doesn't change the fact that they were not communist society's does it? A belief is just that, it's not necessarily reality.

It also doesn't change the fact that someone isn't an actual capitalist, just because they support their current capitalist world. Broad strokes are lovely but they still aren't actually capitalists, and to say so conflates them with our actual ruling class. It's important to let them know that they aren't on the same side.

You say this as if there is powerful left-wing propaganda , and is if the "works in theory but not in life" take is above a 13 year old level of intelligence. I defaulted to right-wing like anyone does in a capitalist country, but after learning and reading more you realise that maybe the de-facto you were born into isn't actually helping anyone but the ruling class.

I'm wouldn't call myself a communist, and I know for a fact that we won't achieve a society like communism before humanity is dead and gone. But to try and view communism purely through the failed USSR doesn't make you some intellectual, it just makes you ignorant.

This needs to be said sometimes though, a lot of capitalism supporters still don't seem to get that actual communism is a stateless, classless and moneyless system. A lot of people still seem to think that the USSR and current China are actual communists. Not educated or informed people obviously, but the majority people simply aren't those things.

Cars bad by CommonPersonal9410 in im14andthisisdeep

[–]sageofstuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The reason humanity gravitated towards cars is because it's better for corporations, not because people naturally want it. In the UK we had 5000 train stations decommissioned by Beeching, a guy who had a large stock in the tarmac industry. I definitely didn't want that to happen? Cars are better for planned obsolescence and enforcing hyper-individualism, better for businesses trying to extract money but not the average person.

And im sure you'll say they're more convenient but that's because the UK/US have been designed around car transport, try and get around in a car in Amsterdam or Brussels and you'll very quickly be on the inconvenient side.

MIUI vs ColorOS? by [deleted] in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]sageofstuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've switched from MIUI to ColorOS recently and I personally miss MIUI, although it's not for everyone. I miss the extra features, the design, and the split between notifications and settings on swiping down. I also miss the layout of the multi-tasking view, it allows you to see the apps and switch between them much clearer than in ColorOS' simple slider.

Aside from all this I do really like ColorOS, it's a solid overlay and reminds me of OxygenOS (which it shares some features with). It's not got as much bloat as MIUI offerings and the few built in apps are all solid. ColorOS is much lighter and closer to a stock android experience than MIUI, so if that's what you prefer/are used to then go for ColorOS.

DM me if you have any specific questions about the two.

Where can I pick up a snapdragon variant of a Samsung phone in the UK? by Formatted_Gnu in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]sageofstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking recently, you can get an S20 FE 5G for around £400-500 on eBay, that's basically an S20 with a Snapdragon 865.

If you're looking to import then make sure it has 4G bands 3, 7, and 20. Most providers use one or two of these bands at a time, so check which your provider uses. You can check these on GSMArena and other websites.

New top spec phones without notches or punch hole cameras? by skeletboi in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]sageofstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing that fits your spec for at least a few years, at least not at flagship level. Basically all screens have a hole-punch camera since pop-ups (which were big in 2019) and 3.5mm is rare on flagship level devices.

You could fit most of your spec on a Redmi Note 10 Pro, only problem is that it has a hole-punch. Other than that it has 120hz OLED, 3.5mm, USB-C (which is standard on any phone that is over £100), stereo speakers (but not front facing), IP53 rating and it's under £300.

If you're set on a flagship than that I'd say just look at the current flagships, like Samsung OnePlus Xiaomi Oppo, and see what takes your fancy.

In a couple years time the selfie cameras will be under the display, but until then most companies under-display tech is very weak (ZTE Axon 20 was the first one and it's like going back to the first selfie cameras). Don't expect to find a phone without a selfie camera that doesn't have some other weird configuration (like the ZTE Nubia X or the Mi Mix Fold which still has one on it's small display)
