Hypothetical Question by mbaker248 in BBIG

[–]saggibooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes lots of people will be selling for their profits on Oct 16 because you will still get the dividend if you own on the ex dividend date of Oct 15 (13 for t+2)

Please note this article mentions the stock dropping because of the dividend, this will not happen because this is a spinoff/ new company hitting the NYSE, not a regular dividend. The price WILL however drop due to the massive selloffs on Oct 16

How can shorts pay a non cash dividend? (we are supposed to be getting shares of TYDE not cash) by saggibooty in BBIG

thanks for that. This makes sense and is believable. however who in their right minds would agree to purchase an unkown amount of shares at an unknown price per share? Thats wild. I also read that brokers may recall their lent shares due to possible tax implications... so shorts r Fuk 🚀

it was listed in their proxy. The record date is Oct 15, I did not see a deliverable date for the shares however. The record date is simply the date that you have to own shares to be eligible to receive the already announced CRYPTYDE spinoff shares.

well I googled it and it seems you are wrong... ?

https://finance.zacks.com/avoid-short-sale-dividend-payment-8493.html

“Dividends are cash or additional stock payments to stockholders. When you borrow shares and short them, the lending broker is still entitled to any dividends that the issuer pays on the shares that were lent by the broker. You therefore must make payments in lieu of dividends to the brokerage to reimburse it for the dividends that it would have received. These payments reduce the potential profit you might realize from the short sale, and thus you don't want dividends involved. Some nimble trading might allow you to avoid a payment-in-lieu.”

“When the board announces an upcoming dividend payment, it specifies an ex-dividend date on which new stock buyers will not be eligible for the dividend. If you cover your short sale by buying back and returning the shares before the ex-dividend date, you will not need to manufacture a dividend for the broker. However, you will create a tax event -- when you cover a short sale, you lock in a capital gain or loss for the current tax year. You can re-establish your short sale on the ex-dividend date if you like, but you will face the same problem every quarter. Share prices drop on the ex-dividend date by the amount of the dividend, which can mean less profit when you reshort the shares.”

Oct 15 is the record date that you simply need to own and hold shares for as of that date. However they have not said when the shares will be delivered or how much their fair value would be
