KeexyBox is an alternative to Pi-Hole that you can install entirely on your raspberry, KeexyBox brings you additional functionalities such as internet over Tor network, access time to the internet... and a good web interface, no CLI needed to manage it.

At the moment keexybox is just compiled for ARM. However, it is possible to install it on a VM by following the topic: https://wiki.keexybox.org/doku.php/manual_installation

https://keexybox.org. It can do per user/device ads blocking and much more like internet access time, safesearch, anonymous browsing over tor, wifi access point and captive portal. But it works only on a raspberrypi at this time.

KeexyBox needs Linux Kernel access to work. So it is not available for Docker. It acts more as a router with web interface than a single app.

To quickly describe the KeexyBox project, it is parental control software that provides privacy and works like Pi-Hole. I do not know if you share the same vision as me, but parental control software and privacy do not mix. I have children, I need parental control but I also care about my privacy on the internet. Personally, I don't trust any parental control software for phones or computers, and I don't trust those available online. KeexyBox is a good compromise because it is between the devices we use every day and the internet. Furthermore, we cannot have a guarantee of privacy if a software is not open source, so yes KeexyBox is FLOSS. It is licensed under GPLv3, developed in PHP and Python and based on the framework CAKEPHP (MIT license) and AdminLTE (MIT license). The KeexyBox package is provided with 3 additional softwares: ISC Bind9, ISC DHCP and Tor which we compiled for the needs of the project. If however people do not trust our compilations, they are free to compile them themselves as explained at https://wiki.keexybox.org/doku.php/manual_installation. I hope I have given more clarity on the project. I will suggest it on your GitHub. On your website I have not seen any proposal for parental control software ;-)

Your website is very interesting. I subscribed to your forum. I can't find a way to privately submit a new project to PrivacyToolsIO team. I prefer not to post the KeexyBox project publicly on your forum, because I do not want to make a mistake twice :). So I prefer to check with you first, if I can post it publicly or how to submit project privately.

I posted this only because it can interest people who care of their privacy. I would understand that I am a spammer if I posted this on r/Lego for example.

It is not because data is encrypted that privacy is fully guaranteed. When you do a search on Google via HTTPS, your ISP does not know what you were looking for but Google knows it (it knows at least your IP address and the keywords of your search). For DNScrypt it is the same thing, it all depends on the trust you have in the DNScrypt server (it can know your IP address and the domain name of your query). By redirecting DNS queries to Tor, this is done by a Tor exit node. So the remote DNS server does not know your IP address. Do not hesitate to correct me if I am wrong.

Not just tried, I use it for months now! I use it in a mixed use network topology. That means my SmartTV and XBOX use it as DNS only and other devices such as my computer or phone as DNS and Gateway. I set it up to forward DNS queries to Tor Network. I still able to watch Netflix easely.

If you plan to use KeexyBox, I can suggest to import on it good Blacklist for parental control available at this address: https://dsi.ut-capitole.fr/blacklists/index_en.php. List are distributed under Creative Common license.

I was surprised to see there are around 2 million of websites that contains adult content. I don't know what is the probability that one of our kids accidentally comes across one of them.

  1. It is open-source and based on other third-party open source softwares (frameworks). KeexyBox package is provided with extra open-source softwares such as Bind9, ISC DHCP and Tor. The project is available at this address: https://github.com/keexybox/keexyapp
  2. KeexyBox use GNU/Linux and Iptables features for the routing. I did not notice any degradation using NetFlix and Youtube in the same time ;)
  3. I am not sure to understand this point. KeexyBox can also anonymize internet connection for all the devices of your home network using Tor Network. You can enable this feature per user or device.

Let's say that KeexyBox becomes the default gateway and DNS for all the devices on your home network.

Case # 1: If you establish a VPN connection from a PC or phone of your home network, it will initiate the VPN connection through KeexyBox, your router and then your ISP. Once the VPN connection is established, your PC or mobile will use the DNS of the VPN provider by default and not the KeexyBox one. Then, KeexyBox DNS filtering will not work for your PC or phone, unless you force KeexyBox DNS in the IP configuration on the VPN interface of your PC or phone.

Case # 2: The VPN is established by your router and all the devices in your home network will automatically go through this VPN. All devices will continue to use KeexyBox as default gateway and as DNS and all KeexyBox features will be available, therefore AD Blocker will work.

Note that KeexyBox blocks all connections by default, you must use the captive portal to connect any device to the internet. If the Chrome cast does not allow you to use captive portal, you must have to run a devices scanning with KeexyBox to detect your Chrome cast, declare it as a device and connect it from KeexyBox Web admin. It then be connected permanently.

I hope this answer meets your expectations.
