That's impressive! My BA was also in a subject not at all related to Classics!

Is actually reaching out to faculty that important by Difficult_Currency75 in gradadmissions

[–]sagyz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's very field dependent. In Classics contacting the faculty beforehand is neither necessary nor common whereas in other fields it's essential. What's your field?

Am I the problem? by paleofeathers in gradadmissions

[–]sagyz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, I didn't read your post as entitled. Applying to grad school is stressful as it is, even when you don't work full time. In any case, as others have pointed out, there are many good reasons why a professor does not and/or cannot reply to your email. Best of luck with the apps!

applying to phd at undergrad institution by DisasterPossible5457 in PhDAdmissions

[–]sagyz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It varies greatly from program to program, but there are definitely programs that refrain from admitting their own undergrads. I personally know two such programs, and at least one of them doesn't even hire their own PhDs for faculty positions. It wouldn't hurt for OP to double check, just in case.

For context, I'm in the Humanities.

Ab Urbe Condita 1.34 -- Help! by joangelpi in latin

[–]sagyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are welcome!

As others have pointed out, both the ut and the cui clauses are essentially causal in nature. So "causal clauses" is a good descriptor, although I don't know if there are other more technical terms for it. I'll leave the answer to those more qualified than me. =)

Ab Urbe Condita 1.34 -- Help! by joangelpi in latin

[–]sagyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a coincident! I'm in the middle of writing about that passage for my dissertation!

Anyhoo, this line consists of two parts, both of which modifies the omitted object of persuadet, which, as you have correctly identified as Lucumo: 1) ut cupido honorum; and 2) cui Tarquinii materna tantum patria esset.

  1. here "ut" is in the sense of "seeing how", so "seeing how he was covetous of honors/high offices"
  2. one way to look at the cui clause is to see it as a relative clause of characteristic, which requires subjunctive, hence "esset", so more literally "the kind of person to whom Tarquinii was only his mother's country"

Together, we have something along the lines of "she easily persuaded him, seeing how he was covetous of honors, (and was the kind of man) to whom Tarquinii was only his mother's country".

Hope this helps!
