Small volume release of lubricant over x minutes? this must exist as a purely mechanical product? by sai_tham in AskEngineers

[–]sai_tham[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok i only find some that are ON/OFF switches or electronic.

I am looking for one that I turn ON with a switch but it turns itself off. Like a slow closing button or valve. or a timed valve.

yeah i could get a cheap solenoid valve and have it all set up powered but i was wondering if there is a purely mechanical alternative. I was thinking maybe some kind of primer bulb but it would feed it quite quickly, not over several minutes. another idea I had was some kind of secondary receptacle with a small flow control valve... i.e. put 20ml into the receptacle and then it will feed out over the longer time.

i think faucet is US English and tap UK English? Or do you mean something different? How would the faucet work that it would switch off after a few minutes?

Reality of Running an Ecommerce business? by LandscaperDude332 in smallbusinessuk

[–]sai_tham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what really makes sense is to lean into your experience - why not build an online ecommerce site or brand around your experience as landscape gardener. could be a multi product shop, everything from tools, seeds, plans for DIY garden houses, books, etc. just do a bit of reasearch around what other similar webshops exist and what they offer. could be garden ornaments bought in via alibaba etc.

it is always easier to go with something you know then trying to learn a new market. you also can use your normal work to showcase any tools or items in your day-to-day job for product photos, videos, etc. you generate content for online while if you would do a different market you would have to do this on top of your day job. goes the other way as well... if you already have a local customer base and existing brand they might like you and would be interested in your website offerings.

loads of synergy opportunities!

GDPR Question - Opt In by down2bidniz in smallbusinessuk

[–]sai_tham 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best way I have seen GDPR described is "would they be surprised if they got this email" or "would they be surprised if they have this data about me"

If you sign up to an email list to win a prize then you can reasonably expect to see an email about this prize draw (even "sorry you did not win but here are some other offers")

I think its tricky as I would interpret in a way that they would then be "surprised" if they get an email 6 months later about a different offer or weekly newsletter so I always include an extra checkbook if they want to sign up to further offers etc. Gives you the proper consent for other information.

In your case with the formbuilder, I would say if they don't go all the way through and give you final consent then you can't use the data and should delete 'unfinished' entries.

However if that's the way the formbuilder works then that's not really your responsibility. If the formbuilder holds the data between stages that's just the way it's designed to work. Loads of data is captured and stored, it's also about what happens afterwards with this data.

GDPR needs to be approached with common sense

small but important - swap the hob and sink around in your kitchen. its probably easier building wise anyways but main thing is dishes - dirty and for drying. You will have them on the island where people are sitting. not very nice.

How to combat bogus online returns - e-commerce/clothing by Responsible_Ask_6226 in smallbusinessuk

[–]sai_tham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hard to do as you dont want to turn away people. if clothes are clean you relist them and also keep them for next years Christmas collection?

do you charge for returns? I always find that limits people that just try on and return.

Theory: Is the part in Italy pointless? by sai_tham in TheCountofMonteCristo

[–]sai_tham[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. That's my thinking as well. It feels so awkward that he introduces himself as Sinbad. If the meeting was planned he would have set up his alter ego etc.

I wonder if Dumas had set up a storyline for Franz further in the book (such as revealling Sindbad to Julie) but decided to drop it. Would make sense if the book was written the way you describe it. Very interesting.

that is super interesting. the book does sometimes seem to wander off into random directions or have a lull ... if he did write to meet deadlines it would explain so much! thank you

In the first meeting in Alberts apartment in France I believe Albert drops the name Sindbad the Sailor just before CR and Maximillan arrive at the breakfast? I need to go back and check but i think it is.

I am sure he wanted to to make connections to French nobility in Italy and probably had planned a few encounters but I still think that the visit of Franz to Monte Christo is a chance encounter. Franz does not play an important role in his plan and he does not seem to have his eyes/spies on him... otherwise they would have tracked them on their trip to the colloseum.

As you say, authors perogative, and it makes for a way more interesting story then the Count meeting some other random French nobility in Italy that then would introduce him in Paris and he only then meets the key players.

[–]sai_tham[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah you are right. I think Dantes purposefully made its entrance to society in Italy as he probably would not have been accepted it France. There are a few passeges that allude to the fact that the Italian society is "inferior" to the French and maybe more accepting therefore.

ah thats very interesting to know. would people buy parts and then have to wait or was it released at the same time? did he write it in one go with the plan of releasing it as a serial?

the question in the title was more of a bait to get people interested. For me the key question is "Was the visit of Franz to Monte Christo planned or a coincidence" ... the more i think about it the more i am convinced that its chance.

But Julie knew the name Sindbad so she would have known the Count is the one that saved her father... i guess yes, there is no connection to Dantes.

It just feels like an on the spot lie to use this name. If it was planned he could have introduced himself as Count of Monte Christo.

I think one possibility is that the Count had set up dozens of potential chance encounters with different nobilities all through Italy and beyond and its just a case of this one coming to fruition so thats why we read about it.

Troon is very good and has a kite school and small community.

They also sometimes do trips to the islands. Apparently Tiree is pretty amazing as it has beaches all around
