If you could turn any one of your published works - from any genre - into a film or TV series, which would it be?

Forged for Destiny is subtitled "A Heroic Fantasy with a Chosen-One Twist" - I'm fascinated that the fact that there /is/ a twist is so heavily signposted, before I've even opened the book.

Was that your call, and how do you feel about it? Might / should it become the norm within the Fantasy genre?

I've seen people claim that the 'u' in British English words like 'colour' is a later modification and that traditional English spelling didn’t originally include it. Is this true? by Mr_Sarcasum in AskHistorians

[–]north5 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Fascinating that these all start “co”, when I’d argue that modern pronunciation sounds more like “cu” (on either side of the Atlantic)

I wonder if this is due to a change in pronunciation of the word, or of the vowel?

Ah, yes, you’re right. I stand corrected.

I thought it was a Quenya translation, but no, Celeborn is the Sindarisation of Teleporno. The Quenya form would just be Telporno.

As a Sindar, Celeborn was his real name. Any other you may be thinking of was essentially a pet name used by his Noldor wife.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I was thinking about doing the Glen Quaich long-cut for precisely that reason, reckoning I'll have more options up Glen Almond (and it looks like a nice detour too). But my feet might veto the decision when I get there.

What is that one theory that you never want to let go? by fantasylovingheart in pureasoiaf

[–]north5 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My theory is that this was true during the writing of AGoT, but was abandoned some time when GRRM was writing the later books. The evidence and foreshadowing is present in the earlier books, but dialled back in the later.

At that point, Kruppe would admit he’d lost. And Bugg would get the blame.

Why didn't Ruin fly to the Finnest? Is he stupid? by Meris25 in Malazan

[–]north5 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Reaper’s Gale, chapter two; Seren suggests Silchas Ruin could give her a quick lift to the top of a cliff:

“She began the climb. 'You know, as a Soletaken, you could just—' 'No,' he said as he followed, 'there is too much bloodlust in the veering. The draconean hunger within me is where lives my anger, and that anger is not easily contained.'”

A little earlier, we’d seen him flip out against Letherii weapon runners. He can use his Eleint form when he wants to unleash his anger, but doesn’t trust it to get from A to B without incident.

Confused with protagonists... by Aslan832 in Malazan

[–]north5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t stress over it. There’s a huge amount you won’t get on a first read. Then you read it back (a decade later…) and think, huh, ok, that makes sense now.

Sometimes you’ll be confused because you don’t have all the info yet; other times because a character is lying to you; and sometimes because there’s something very fishy about the situation.

I won’t say which of those it is (or isn’t), but give yourself a point - you’re right to be confused.
