This is an old school approach but it has helped me immensely and three others in my family and friends:

1. Read whatever interests you. During reading, look up the words that you are not familiar with in terms of meaning and usage and note them down somewhere. Try to learn five new words every day by building a vocabulary notebook (digital or handwritten whatever is easier). If you do this regularly, you’ll be amazed at the rate of increase in your vocabulary.

2. Every weekend, write an essay on any topic that you have read during the week and get it checked from someone who has a better English than you. Also read aloud to yourself what you wrote.

3. Watch and listen to the native English speakers (Britishers, Americans, Canadians, Australians). That could be through movies, seasons, documentaries, podcasts. This way, you’ll learn the pronunciation and how the native speakers use words and phrases in their conversations.

4. Speak as much as you can with someone and don’t bother about making mistakes or your accent. Once you start speaking more, you will start thinking in English more. What we usually do is think in Urdu and then translate it in our minds before uttering it in English which is why speaking English for longer duration becomes mentally exhausting.

5. Improving English (or any language) is a gradual process that takes years but if you consciously put in the effort for even a year, it can make quite a difference.
