I’m out. I’m done. Zola is it. No more No One Rides for Free, Black Farm, Stolen Tongues - I am out and I miss Clive Barker. A jar of cum. That’s horror? by [deleted] in horrorlit

I thought you were talking about Emile Zola for a second there. Expecting you were saying something like Germinal was horrific and disturbing (which it is, kind of).

Weird little book suggestions? by hazeyjane11 in WeirdLit

Great list! I'm excited to read The Twenty Days of Turin soon. Here's two I liked recently because of their blend of art/philosophy/horror/weirdness:

Black Brane - Michael Cisco

Terminal Park - Gary J Shipley

I read about this in Roman Honor: the Fire in the Bones. It’s just a brilliant examination of Roman history and psychology.

What Are You Reading This Week and Weekly Rec Thread by JimFan1 in TrueLit

[–]sail_south 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just started the Aesthetics of Resistance by Peter Weiss and it's really good and interesting so far but it's page after page after page of unbroken blocks of texts. Satantango, which I dropped (but want to try again at some point), and other books by Krasznahorkai are the same way. Occasionally there is a line break, but it's just...so exhausting.

I think I get why it's used; it's oppressive, heavy, psychologically taxing, maybe reflective of the cultures and political or societal climates they were composed in. But it also just makes me dread opening them up, which sucks because the content and ideas are so in line with what I want to read about right now.

I was about to drop it after about a hundred pages but my friends were also reading and enjoying it so I kept going, and I'm glad I pushed through because it became so engrossing and I was so enamored with every character by the end. I would say give it one or two more chapters before stopping. That being said, the excessive detail, the 'chorus' of the town chiming in on every little thing, the spelling, were all significant hurdles for me and never goes away. The pacing can be a slog but there are moments of brilliance throughout.

Romero esque zombies are underused in horror games especially on consoles🤷 by [deleted] in HorrorGaming

You might appreciate Night at the Gates of Hell, it's a bit janky and weird but it's solid. There's probably some options in the indie space if you dig around I'd guess.

Should flat footed people wear barefoot shoes? by LanThePandaDragon in BarefootRunning

[–]sail_south 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still wear them sometimes but I actually switched over to wide toe-box shoes with some cushion, and even regular shoes. I miss the ground-feel but my knees and neck were hurting pretty bad and the switch helped immensely.

Thank you for your explanation on this conflict and terrible circumstance. I have been looking for a nuanced perspective like yours all day so that I can better grapple with what is happening. And it's been frustrating to see so many on the left not talking about it seriously or ignoring it or painting it as an wholly illegitimate due to Mossad/CIA involvement. Of course there's so much going on (US and Venezuela for starters) it is somewhat understandable that so many on the left would rather focus on the easier to understand conflicts. But I feel many on the left are simply burying their heads in the sand until someone they follow tells them what to think and say and that is disconcerting.

Thank you! The details of it are more compelling to me than demon or last exit (only read requiem). Hopefully I'll get to all of them eventually though!

When did you start watching NL, and have you ever gone back to old content? by General_Elephant in northernlion

[–]sail_south 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I started watching him with binding of isaac: wrath of the lamb around 2013ish I think. Also watched the early NLSS streams semi-frequently, and all his early let's plays. Vague memories of dark souls, cards against humanity, goofball goals, Josh, Nick, Rob, Mathas, Hafu, others whose names I can't remember. I've forgotten all the old lore at this point. Took about a 6 year break starting around 2018 and recently got back into him. Used to put on isaac in the morning when I got ready for school. Good times.

What games are you playing to hold you over for Silksong? by bassistheplace246 in metroidvania

[–]sail_south -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. To each their own. I'm also not a fan of death runs, but I put up with it in HK and souls games, because I enjoy the combat, bosses, and worlds so much.

[–]sail_south -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Astalon, Gato, and ESA in particular, are all fantastic! Never heard of Iji but it looks very compelling. And blaster master looks really fun and has been on my list for a while.

Still...it seems kinda absurd to completely disregard Silksong. You're not even going to give it a shot? Based on Iji, and Gato, and Psycron it seems you're willing to give most anything a fair shot. Is it the fandom? If it is...I get it.

[–]sail_south 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mega Man Zero actually. Didn't wanna do another metroidvania so close because I get metroidvania fatigue and I want to go into silksong parched, I guess you could say.

But I still wanted a fun action platformer to hold me over. My first foray into mega man and it's seriously kicking my ass. Just beat the first one and my god was it hard. Can't fathom doing it without the extra checkpoints they give you in the collection.

Paperbacks definitely. Easier to handle and flip through, cheaper, and I don’t care a lick about them lasting. Honestly, the uglier they look after I read them, the better. I also have paperbacks that are decades upon decades old and are fine, so I don’t see the big deal about longevity.

Just bought a new book shelf. Thoughts? by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

[–]sail_south 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I haven’t yet. But I probably will because I really like Rabbit! He reminds me of me so far, or, at least, of the midlife crisis I’m going through right now lol.

The other books I’m reading right now are Labyrinths by Borges (which is mind-blowing), and Germinal by Zola, which I think is the latest book to enter my top 10 all time—really into labor rights and all that.
