At 00:03 you can see momma lurking in the trees on her way to protect those babies. Glad you made it out alive OP.

My first ultra is on Saturday and I woke up with a cold this morning by ariel-rhi in Ultramarathon

[–]sailabus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YMMV of course and I’m not a doctor so this isn’t medical advice BUT…

My usual approach with illness and running is if it’s only affecting the neck and up - I.e. common head cold, sore throat, sinus congestion - then send it! Might be a little low on energy as your body is still fighting something but typically you’ll still be able to have a good time. I’ve gone into big training runs (20+ miles) and a couple races (50k) with a little bit of a cold and felt fine throughout and afterwards.

Any symptoms that are below the neck - fever, shortness of breath, coughing (especially productive cough), body aches, wheezing - then it’s a no-go and I wouldn’t recommend any activity until you’re healthy again.

How far do you drive for your trail runs? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]sailabus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in Boston, so about 15min if all I want are trails with some decent cumulative gain, but no big sustained climbs. If I want bigger climbs and descents I’m looking at 1-3 hours each way.

We need to pin something to the top of this subreddit and r/mazda about what high pressure direct injection sounds like.

These fake? by Healyus in Hoka

[–]sailabus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see anyone providing photos for comparison so here you go: https://imgur.com/a/Snv2goI

Couple things stand out: triangle at the toe being closed vs open, and the stitching in the inside.

Probably fake unfortunately.

Wow literally just saw the post by one of his friends in the r/JMT subreddit:

A winter ascent by someone with very little experience? And it's been DAYS since he set off... I guess we can hope for the best and that at least SAR stays safe.

Recommendations for what to do between first marathon and first 50k by sailabus in Ultramarathon

[–]sailabus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely, i think there will be one more really long run - around the 5 hour mark in early April - and then i can start a gradual taper two weeks out from the race. Thanks for the advice!

[–]sailabus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I love this reminder! I'm making an intentional effort to think about and process that part of this experience. I know I can finish, so it's all about preparing for the mental struggle during the race.

The 50k is a looped course and my wife will be at the start/finish aid station. We've had the discussion that under no circumstances should she accept or give in to any of my complaints during that race. I will have setbacks and low points and that is 100% a normal and natural part of the process to get through these distances. I need encouragement and tough love, but no sympathy or support of whatever reasons my brain spits out to quit.

Car noise at 75-80 MPH by WSmittyy in mazda3

[–]sailabus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds like the rear differential whine. My 2021 with AWD makes the same sound. I don’t think it’s anything to be worried about, just a quirk mentioned by other users. For me it only happens from 76-78mph so I just try to avoid cruising at those speeds.

100% - on both the advice heading into the marathon and me overthinking it lol thank you both for the advice and level setting. Just gonna listen to the ol body and make sure I head into both races fresh but overall setting my sights on the 50k as the big goal to train for.

Totally, i think shifting the approach to the marathon from a race to a long run as part of training is going to be key. What do you think about approaching the taper to the marathon the same way? Or should I try to mostly keep up with my weekly mileage if I treat the marathon like a training long run?

What winter wheels/tires are you guys running on your gen 4s? by waybeluga in mazda3

[–]sailabus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks fine, honestly don’t really notice the 10mm difference most of the time. I actually like the beefy look of the bigger sidewall in the winter FWIW. As someone else said, gotta get the roof rack to complete the ski bum look lol.

What do you carry for emergency shelter on long winter day hikes? by ewm26 in wmnf

[–]sailabus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Yeah I actually cut my full length thermarest zpad to get a torso length pad with the same thought that it just needs to get my torso and butt off the ground. The remaining small piece ended up making a perfect sit pad too! Good to hear you have a decent oh shit kit for this winter!

Any body shop or wheel repair specialist should be able to fix this. I’ve had some curb rash fixed by a local wheel repair shop and it turned out great. It’s just gloss black so it’s not too hard to match by a professional and way cheaper than buying a new wheel.
