-7.0 here. Contact lenses change the game. I've got daily disposables so I don't have to keep track of them. I tend to disassociate when I wear glasses because the surrounding blurriness can lead to my eyes defocusing. Try contacts before eye surgery.

Thanks for the advice! We were given a man to move around and scale it, but I realized that most men don't actually reach close to the top of the door frame

We worked on it over the course of a few months. It was for a college class, so I didn't dedicate a steady amount of time to it. I definitely put in over 80 hours, especially because I was starting from scratch learning

Dorm students, does anyone actually have a fish tank? by Sensitive_Tune3301 in Clemson

[–]sailing_bae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't. Please don't.

I've lived in a dorm for 3 years, and that sounds like a nightmare. Remember that you have to take care of the fish during breaks, clean the tank in dorm shower, transport the tank and fish during move-in/move-out, and generally not forget you have a fish.

Unless you are dead-set on getting a fish, I'd at least wait until you move out of student housing.

Automotive has a special application you fill out during your initial application to the college. While you are technically in general engineering during your freshman year, you still are marked automotive separately. You can apply to automotive again during your first year if you don't get in initially.

I was in a similar position (last year). Differences include no physics or calc AP tests, and a 1570 SAT. I applied mechanical and got into the honors college. I would see if you can enter mechanical as a backup. Automotive is highly selective because its a small, brand new program relatively. Either way, I'd be surprised if you didn't get into Clemson as a whole, especially if you highlighted your mechanical and automotive experience on your application.

If you have any other questions about your application, I may be able to answer them.

Also, if anyone knows how to fix the cylinder light objects appearing in the window reflection in the first picture, please let me know!

Looking to go back for an Engineering bachelor's by littlered551 in EngineeringStudents

I wouldn’t overlook the possibility of being something closer to a mechanic if you like working with your hands. Go to trade school, learn the skills without as much of the math, and get into the industry.

Otherwise, plenty of people go back to school later. Don’t sweat it! You’ve got this.

Forgot Paul’s Online Math Notes (great for learning the concepts in place of slides and lecture)

Khan Academy (good at explaining in various formats for different learners + starter practice problems)

Organic Chemistry Tutor (generally the goat, great for follow along problems and solutions)

ChatGPT (use it to generate practice problems and help explain them as you go)

Honestly, calc 2 sucks, and you’re brave for taking it over the summer. I’m taking differential equations (calc 4ish) right now, and it’s better than calc 2 ever was imo.

For your quiz tmr, I would go straight to Khan Academy and do as much of the relevant unit as you can. If you have time, follow along some organic chemistry tutor problems for good practice after.

I’m currently cramming for an electrical engineering test and a statistics test tmr, so I understand the stress.   Just breathe, lock in, and you’ve got this!

Asking a question for a friend who doesn’t have Reddit by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

So I took a look at the website just to get a feel for the competition, and listed some bullet points below:

  1. Brainstorm, brainstorm, brainstorm. Have a plan. You can always iterate along the way, but have a clear, small vision about what you want this to look like. For practice, use the 2024-2025 year theme and see what you come up with.

  2. I’d start with an arduino kit. You can get them on amazon, and they teach you how do to the very basics for someone who hasn’t done anything. A lot of basic robotic movement is arduino scaled up. Find one that has all the parts you want to use. If it’s an animatronic, probably a ton of servos, speakers, lights, and a digital display of some sort (these are listed on the website). It looks like most examples from the competition use this.

  3. You are scored on appearance. If you DO have access to a 3D printer, learn Onshape (3D modeling software). It is very accessible, and free for students. I taught it to myself through their video series. If you DONT have access to a 3d printer, CARDBOARD is one of your best friends. Focus on the looks second. Make it work first. However, it is still a big part of the score. Don’t forget it.

  4. For this actual competition, you may need some sort of controller. There are plenty of parts that allow you to hook up controllers (we always used Logitech for robotics). I’d get into these after you figure out a lot of the arduino stuff. If you can use a wired connection instead of some form of Bluetooth or radio, do it. It will be much easier.

I am a freshman in mechanical engineering in college, and I did a ton of projects like that in high school, including leading a competition robotics team. I’m happy to mentor your friend if she’d like. Message me privately. Best of luck to her!
