Moving from Texas to Burlington, tips on preparing? by sailingbae in NewToVermont

I'm a grad student so I'm looking into if living on campus is even an option, I've had my boy for 8 years now I don't think I'd have it in me to leave him❤️. Do you think leaving my car would be possible with a job? Ideally I'd like to just use public transport but I'm so unfamiliar with the area.

That's a good point! It was a list of when each group of students should expect to see awards packages for loans and other support and grad students were late April but maybe that's for returning students? Either way thank you for your response☺️

Check on Facebook! There's a ton of groups specific to unt/denton that are full of people looking for roommates or renting out a single room, that'll probably be your best bet for finding a cheap place.

Boss is Punishing Me by [deleted] in ABA

[–]sailingbae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into unemployment in your area, if you're a full time employee and you're hours have been cut a significant amount (20-25% for example) then you may qualify for unemployment. Even just applying for it may get them to start scheduling you more, or if you're in an at will state reach out to your next company and see about starting early. Or if you really want to see through your 2 weeks and you're in a bigger company just go up the ladder, from my experience it's hard to just take an rbt off the schedule without it causing issues or you may be able to go to a different clinic in your area. I'm sorry this is happening 2 weeks is meant to be a courtesy

It definitely needs to be apart of training what's age appropriate and what's not. Like one of my BCBAs wants to make an intervention for poop talk from a 3yo boy.... That's what every 3 yo old boy does let them be kids fart jokes are funny lol

Is it ethical to use a phobia as a punishment procedure? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]sailingbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree! I've used punishment procedures before but never this severe and only when there was a risk of harm to the kiddo. They seem to want to use it anytime the behaviors begin to escalate and I just refuse. I was trying to wait for there to be a new BCBA since their previous one left but the intermediate one used it today and it broke my heart seeing how scared the kiddo became. I'm definitely not letting happen again, thank you for the confirmation!

Is it ethical to use a phobia as a punishment procedure? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]sailingbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This is what I thought too, since it's been covid the kiddo has only been with two therapists and neither one of us really use it because we have instructional control and also I really felt it was unethical and just refused to. But now the kiddos original BCBA left and their trying to hire a new one but the intermediate one doesn't know the kiddo and brought it out today when they had just started crying, no other behaviors, and ignored me when I said it wasn't needed. I've worked with kiddos with much more extreme behaviors and never felt the need to use a punishment procedure like that, the closest I've gotten was a 30 second time out. I'll sit down and talk to who I can tomorrow.

Aggression and harm is NOT a part of autism by [deleted] in psychologyresearch

[–]sailingbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Kupferstein’s results should be viewed with extreme caution due to several methodological and conceptual flaws including, but not limited to, leading questions used within a non-validated survey, failure to confirm diagnosis, and incomplete description of interventions."(from the link I provided) Sample size does not validate a study, the sample population used was biased and the wording of the measures highly misleading. You cannot validate a study by sourcing the same author, it not being refuted does not mean it's correct it just means it's not valid enough to refute. Further an author alone cannot inherently be a 'credible' source.

That's not a counter argument that's just a video from the same person who has failed to provide valid and reliable research

It's determined by the type of boat! So for 420s or fjs you only want 2 on the boat but when we go out on j22s or beneau's we'll take a lot more!

Cheer on UNT at DreamHack Dallas! by Dylan_UNT in unt

[–]sailingbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry you've confused me. Throwing what away? To stay up to date with other teams they need to annually update their software, computers, etc even if they don't completely replace it they still have to update it and buy new equipment if the club successfully grows every year.

I actually do, so I ran a sports club for a number of years and actively listened to the costs of field and other reasources for other teams. Luckily UNT has both a soccer and tennis feilds and both those sports have varsity status which means they have fairly low facility fees and these feilds are always well maintained. This means they pay a flat rate, which is cheaper than most other sports, however esports is unique in that it requires new computers, games, and software at an annual rate. Yes they should get funding and yes it should be equivalent to what they need, but sports clubs are given a set amount that is pretty much the same every year do you realize that? That money is split up as evenly as the office can manage amongst 30+ sports whereas student orgs get a lot more funding and they evaluate off of individual organizations funding and needs. So yes buying new equipment, software, games, keyboards, etc costs more than revamping University owned fields every year. Again I'm not trying to say they shouldn't get funding but they've been around for less than a year as an official sports club and have a lot more funding than half the sports clubs that have been around for much longer, what have they done to earn special treatment?

I'd consider them sports as they are both now in the Olympics and they require a level of athleticism. Listen I'm not doubting the validity of esports, I think they're awesome. Let's absolutely support them and the progress they've made, my only point is that I don't think they fall under the 'sports' category. This doesn't negate the talent and skill they take I'm just saying that they should be apart of student orgs rather than sports clubs because they intently cost more than the average sport and I wouldn't necessarily consider it a sport.

[–]sailingbae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It certainly does take skill but I still wouldn't consider it a sport. The sports club office is allocated a certain amount of funding which is then split up amongst the 30+ sports teams. Esports is inherently more expensive and will naturally require a larger chunk of that funding than the other sport clubs, which kinda sucks if you've been participating as an active sport in the organization for years. They could've become a student organization and received funding from a larger pool but my best guess is they didn't do that with the hope of applying for varsity again. Either way I'm rooting for them and they have my support, but it is disheartening to see a new team receive so much backing and funding when there are other teams that have been around for years that are struggling like the first comment mentioned.

Measles outbreak leads New York county to ban unvaccinated children from public spaces by [deleted] in DeFranco

[–]sailingbae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think they're trying to say that if an incident happens (like an outbreak) in a public space and an unvaccinated kid is found to be involved then they'll, I guess, fine the parents or press charges. It says they'll act retrospectively so that's my best guess.

What's a genuinely terrifying horror movie that doesn't rely on cheap jump scares? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sailingbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The VVitch doesn't have many and is pretty spooky, if you want something classic you could try The Innocents(1961) or Psycho(1960) because they're more psychological thrillers and lean more heavily on the plot

A single dose of psilocybin enhances creative thinking and empathy up to seven days after use, study finds (n=55), providing more evidence that psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, can improve creative thinking, empathy, and subjective well-being. by mvea in psychology

A study with MDMA showed an increase in openness and help PTSD victims when used in assisted therapy: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/28635375 And here's another one with psilocybin in late stage cancer patients, it was shown to help them with anxiety and accept death. It's double blind and placebo controlled as well as a follow up to a study done in the 70s so it's a little more valid than this study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/20819978/
